I appreciate seeing another RU-vid channel that actually treats 10mm with respect and gives credibility to the caliber instead of acting like 10mm is only a niche round. In my opinion, 10mm is actually a beast of a round, it has a rather flat trajectory, plenty of power, and some very impressive ballistic performance. It seems almost as if 10mm can do it all and is almost perfect in every way, but that's just my opinion though.

It's all about breaking bones and incapacitation not bleeding out. 10 mm, more rounds. Hard cast, flat faced with frac capability. Chest rig and spray. When you're face down, hoping she's going to let go, spray had a way of making you taste bad. The best way to survive a bear encounter is to not have one!

When I was in Alaska about a decade ago, our guide had 3 guns with him. A 10mm 1911, a S&W .500 and a 12ga loaded with solid copper slugs. He said he preferred the 10mm because of the capacity. That’s mostly what he carried while we were fishing. He actually fired a warning shot when a bear got too close. That bear high tailed it away from the creek and we went back to the seaplane lol

Yes Sir, you can't beat a Delta Elite. The 10mm is the best ACP cartridge and it will easily penetrate thin 9mm rated body armor. The .357 is too hard to fire fast after recoil, a 1911 in 10mm can drill out a 6 inch hole at 25 yards rapid fire in under 4 seconds. The only .357 worth carrying is the GP100 with big grips, I would rather carry an old Colt 45 long then a .357 mag any day. I loath double action triggers, that waste of time is enough to get you killed when you could have been cocked and locked, and ready to go.

How many "useful" shots can you get off at a charging bear? They run about 30 mph (Usain Bolt can do about 27 mph). At what range can you make meaningful hits? If the bear starts it's charge at 50 yards, can you get a good hit at that distance? How fast can you continue to make good hits before the bear knocks you over? Are you really going to need more than 6 shots in the less than 5 seconds it takes the bear to get to you? Assuming all of your shots hit a vital area (even that one at fifty yds), are you really going to have time for a 7th shot? Use whichever platform you can make the hits with; spray and pray isn't really effective in this case.

For me the 10mm with heavy hard cast would be the way to. I cast so I would be able to match the load and practice with the same power ammo for much cheaper that would slow me more practice. Plus I know how well I shoot a revolver compared to how well I shoot a semi. Another cool video dude thanks for taking the time to do it
@rolomaticz5009
@rolomaticz5009 Год назад
You can't use cast bullets for 10mm because of the muzzle pressure and FPS speed, only copper jacketed rounds. Using cast lead wad cutters is OK / fine for .38 special, but could explode in the 10mm pistol barrel without a copper jacket. Please don't try this, you could end up with shrapnel in your face and hands if you attempt it without a very light hand load powder charge for the cast lead rounds to under 1.1K FPS on the powder charge chart bullet weight chart. At that point, I don't think there will be enough recoil to actuate the slide spring fully to operate into battery, thus not have the needed energy to eject the slide spring fully. You can play with this in revolvers, but not in ACP cartridges where the recoil or gas pressure of the gun operates the slide / bolt mechanism to reload into battery. The $ you would save on FMJ bullets would eat up the barrel / internal chrome plating, and thus cause the barrel to degrade into failure prematurely IMHO.

Funny...b I've used them all the time and buffalo bore and underwood both say it's safe. It's soft lead bullets that cause that not hardcast. Especially not modern hardcast

Either of them are better than hurling insults, but none of them are a match for a .44 magnum, .454 Casull, .460 and .500 S&W magnum, etc. That 15 rounds for the 10mm might be a good thing, but you may need all of them for what one or two of the true magnums will do. Most recently with three major Midwestern metropolitan PD's, in cities where I served as chief administrative officer. I'm since retired, belong to two gun clubs and spend more hours, I'm sure, at the range developing, testing, and firing myriad revolver and rifle handloads than you do. I'd take my .44 mag Ruger Redhawk too. I can get six 300 grain CPWFN-GC lead bullets in him before he can get a chunk of me. However, if I do the math, 8x240 is gonna give me an edge at stopping but certainly turning him, over 6x300. Seeing the nose distortion afterward, I have to wonder if the flutes survive contact with major bones in an animal, either. If not, then what's the point of the flutes? I guess they still do help to focus the impact force on first contact, helping to break through the barrier. But it seems like they would lose all of the special flesh-swirling effect that is supposed to be a signature of Lehigh Xtreme bullets, too. Still, 8 jugs after those barriers? Mighty fine.

Have you tried the Buffalo Bore .357 mag. load featuring a 180gr. hard cast projectile with gas check, called the "Heavy 357 mag Outdoorsman"? It's rated @ 1400 fps out of a 4" bbl. That's over 780 ft/lbs of energy and it has such a high sectional density that I have not been able to observe anything from "Extreme Penetrator" that even comes close. Of course, the recoil is something else, but I get what I paid for here in Wyoming where we also, like you, occasionally run into some fairly large critters with teeth, claws and a bad attitude.

The real question is has a 357 Magnum which full power loads ever been to Africa and taken down a cape buffalo in two shots. If not then it's no match against the 10mm whatsoever, because Razor Dobbs has with his Dan Wesson 5 inch barrel 10mm. He killed 2 cape buffalo with his 10mm

I’ll take the semi auto every time! Simply for capacity and speed. I carry a S&W 460 mag some times just because it’s way cool but usually I carry a HK VP9 9mm with the extreme penetrators.

Maybe there’s a video. Compare 9mm extreme penetrators to 10mm extreme penetrators. It’s a matter of means to me. All my pistols are 9mm except my 460 mag. So that’s what I carry and use the best ammo to make it viable bear defense.

@@paulcritchfield6958 you know I've been hearing that for years and with today semi autos that just doesn't seem to be a valid argument. If you keep your gun clean and use quality loads that you have tested a lot and you have trained a lot with that is really a none issue. The last time I had a problem is when American Eagle ammo didn't have any powder so how would that been better in a revolver the primer would be shoved the bullet between the cylinder and barrel keeping you from opening the gun or just pulling the trigger. I just don't buy that tired old argument
@lw7238
@lw7238 2 года назад
You're talking about ammo with no powder, not the gun. No gun will work with powerless ammo. Two different issues.

In the old days similar bullets were made of bronze but the forces of evil have put a stop to that. What a shame, performance would be even better. I have a very similar Glock 21 and am putting together a Glock 41 in 460 Rowland. Just waiting for the barrel kit. You are making excellent videos for this purpose.

100% Glock 10mm you get 15 rounds compared to 5-6 I'm the 357 with equal or greater ballistic performance
@bdr32965
@bdr32965 2 года назад
Also the 10mm shoots at a flatter trajectory than most other rounds, and since .40 S&W is the little brother to 10mm it also shoots a flat trajectory as well
@AlaskanBallistics
@AlaskanBallistics 2 года назад
Trajectory is about speed and b.c. I think the 9mm out to 100 or 150 is flatter

Rough choice. All others being equal revolvers are not as tempermental if they get dumped in the dirt or dropped or banged. They may be lighter , depending on what they are being compared with, but then the 16 rounds of ammo in the pistol adds a lot of weight as does the square shape of a pistol. But assuming I take really good care to make sure my gun is clean, and Im man enough to heft it, I like the idea of having more shots against a charging bear. Not that you would have enough time to shoot that many, but I would hate to RUN OUT and have that be my last thought. There is some logic behind a LARGER revolver like a .44 which might not need as many shots, provided you could control it, and again, weight. But in my opinion, all of these are GOOD options. Any of these weapons would ease the mind. At least we aren't arguing about 9mm and .45 anymore when it comes to bears. Don't mean to offend if THOSE are your choices, but based on what I know, they are bad choices indeed unless the idea is to shoot yourself so you don't suffer as much. Databyter

Are there any 9mm or 40 cal rounds that you would trust for bear protection? Ive got a glock 19 and a 27. I was looking for something i could use in one of those, or do you think i really need something bigger?
