Today, we are installing and optimizing the security surveillance management software Blue Iris. This software is resource intensive and without the proper configuration, your security camera system may experience errors, lost surveillance footage, crashes or even total failure. If you are new to Blue Iris, welcome because we are going to download the software, install it, buy a license, run through the initial setup steps and add some cameras. I will show you 11 performance tips to optimize the software to keep your PC running at its best.
For those of you who watch my channel know that I’m a big fan of the video monitoring and recording software Blue Iris. In the past, I’ve struggled first hand with the software’s performance issues, system crashes and coming home to lost footage, error messages and even the blue screen of death. With the latest version 5 and, a clean PC, and a handful of optimization tips, performance is about to change.
The PC that I will be using today was recently restored back to defaults. I also presented its spec in another video. Please check that out to become familiar with its hardware.
Since this video is about setting up Blue Iris and optimizing its performance, and in this video I define MY optimal performance. This is a subjective matter with many dependencies, like the PC hardware, other programs installed on the machine, number of cameras and resolution and even expectations of the software.
I walk through the steps of downloading and installing the software. I then purchase a license key to gain access to all the features.
Here is a list of the performance features and the additional setting I discuss.
1. Hard drive configuration - ensuring the computer has at least 1 SSD and a mechanical drive.
2. Postponing Windows updates so they don’t restart the PC unexpectedly. I also ensure the power setting don’t allow the machine to go to sleep.
3. File save locations are important. Ensure Blue Iris’s database is saved on an SSD. Also place New files on this drive. The archive or stored files can go on the slower WD purple drive.
4. Use direct to disc recording to eliminate re-encoding
5. Configure each camera and Blue Iris to record at 15 fps. Any more than this doesn’t provide much of an advantage and uses resources.
6. A global setting for FPS can reduce the frames shown on the display without impacting the recordings.
7. Use of the sub stream profiles will display each camera in lower resolution while continuing to record in full resolution.
8. Recording this sub stream helps in playing back multiple cameras’ footage at once since the resolution is lower.
9. Restricting the amount of data used by Remote Desktop also can bring down the CPU numbers by decreasing the refresh rate.
10. Intel’s quick sync video takes some of the load off of the CPU as well.
11. When using Blue Iris as a Windows Service, the user interface is not showing but the application continues to run in the background.
I also show the performance numbers when Blue Iris is moving around files. Lastly, I discuss my optimizations that I personally use.

Thanks for video. My server crashed and I had been using BI4 for 5 years or so. I installed BI5 yesterday and needed to update everything. The substream live view at 17:50 helped my cpu performance the most, but all of it was very useful!

Excellent video for someone who has been using BI out-of-the-box, with no optimizations for a couple of years. I had three cameras inside my home and wanted to add four new POE cameras outside. When I first checked, I was running around 40% CPU utilization with the three inside cameras. After making it through only about half of your optimizations I'm already down to under 10%. That's a huge increase. I plan to work through the rest of them as well, then set my new cameras up the same way. Thank you!

Awesome tutorial! I am running a pc with an Intel i5 9400 (w/Quicksync for decoding), 32 GB RAM, a Crucial 500GB SSD, a WD Purple 8TB, an Intel network interface and a 1050Ti for the monitor in addition to 4 x Reolink RLC-520. CPU is only running @ 18-20% and RAM @ 2.81 GB by following your tutorial. In my use case, I've set all cameras as well as monitor framerate to 20 fps. I am not using the substream though. This has been a resource saver. Thank you.

these are awesome tips!!! i only used about 4 tips and my cpu usage drastically dropped down. i7 3570k @ 3.4 8gb ram. it's an old system. hooked up 2 cameras only. w/o the tips cpu was hovering around mid 50 to 60s. after adjusting no decode, fps, running as service in background and one more i forgot it dropped down to low 20s. i wanted to try a few other settings but didn't have time. But what a great help. i don't hear the fan working as hard anymore.

Your videos are always so helpful but I still have a question that so many users would like to find an answer to: I am ashamed to admit that after so many years of using B.I. and managing a rather complex system of 16 cameras I still manage to 'miss the action' more often than I would like to admit. While I know that the simple answer is to record 24/7 I can only do this practically on just 2 of my cameras and the rest must rely on motion activation. I simply cannot seem to find the right combination of Make Time, Break Time, Re-trigger, etc. that will not still leave gapping holes in my coverage. For example: Let's say that I would like to have my camera record for 60 seconds after a trigger and then stop (unless it is re-triggered during those 60 seconds) in which case it will continue to record until the action stops. After it stops I need to know that it will begin to record again IMMEDIATELY upon the next trigger. It seems that the 'second time around never' happens soon enough and I miss that next event. As I read in someone's post with the this same question: "The UPS guy walks up the driveway and is recorded doing so. As he goes around to the back door and out of sight the recording stops. When he then returns down the same path (all of which is set for motion trigger) he is not recorded at all. Why?" I would be so grateful if you or someone here could shed some light on this for those of us who haven't been able to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for all of the great videos you make. You have helped me out a lot.

hi, you saved my BI subscription, i was already think to trash all my cams and buy a physical DVR combo, i have 22 HD cams (indoor and outdor) , and CPU was always "120" or higher (100%), just using yout tip about the substreams went down to 25-30%, Gracias!!!!!!!!

I had Blue Iris Demo for almost a year. As long as you don't shut it down once trial is expired. Anyway, I bought it today thanks to you. I really loved the optimization tips, it dropped down my CPU usage by half. I just can't find the URL for my secondary stream so I won't benefit of two of the Tips but I'm happy with the end result... for now. :-P

After watching this video, my system went from 97% to 25% with no impact on the actual quality new recording BlueIris does. I have 12 cameras on Ryzen 7 1800x, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD for Windows OS and another 1TB SSD as main drive for BlueIris. Furthermore, offloading stored videos to 2x8GB WesternDigital. (whole system is backup by backblaze... just in case) So i just wanted to say thank you for this video guide.

Thanks for making this video! Very well done for a new user like myself. I think the most confusing is all the camera choices. I have gone with mostly Hikvision 4K/8MP turret and one dome, a couple Axis cameras (dome) VERY NICE and expensive.

Marvelous video - I see this will take some learning curve time. Very powerful, but lots to decide and get straight. I need to figure out best way of putting a display downstairs as well. HDMI cables wouldn't be long enough, and how could one interact remotely. Seems I'd need a separate PC - unless I just did a monitor extension, then controlled views from a phone. Still need to figure that out. Just subscribed to your channel - perhaps you have other videos answering those issues. Thankyou

@@HomeTechDIY Build a cheap Raspberry Pi with an HDMI monitor (or conversion cable), login to the desktop and launch the browser w/http to your BI computer. Mount the pi on the back of the monitor and put it on a wall, a desk, a table, whatever :)

I especially like the tip to upgrade my very old PC with SSD and adjust the settings for file storage. That, plus the substreams and 15 FPS was a huge difference with my 10 camera system. Next step is continuous "direct to disk" recording without BlueIris overlays and motion detection. This is tricky. In your video, you mentioned that you would describe the "direct to disk" settings more fully in a future video. I'd appreciate if you might include "screen shots" of your actual Blue Iris and Reolink settings using current version 5 Blue Iris screens (mine are different for Blue Iris 5.4.4.8 x64.) I much appreciate the many hours of effort it took for you to profuce and edit the video for clarity and brevity. Nicely done.

I run Blue Iris on a Windows 10 PC. I added a registry patch that stops the computer automatically rebooting after updates and I just login once a month to do a reboot. I also run Home Assistant in a Virtual Box VM on the same machine so I could not have it rebooting itself randomly. It's been absolutely rock solid for the past 2 years I have been running in this configuration with the registry patch. I generally use UI3 (The web interface) when monitoring and scrubbing time lines. The CPU utilisation is lower to stream to UI3 than having the main interface open on a remote machine

I feel your pain with Windows man, it's ridiculous you have to modify the registry to prevent updates. I would love to see a Linux release of Blue Iris. Microsoft lost their way since Windows 8 and I don't see things getting any better. It's unreal how they shove updates down your throat and now you have to deal with feature creep. I run everything I possibly can on Linux now and couldn't be happier. If Blue Iris embraced Linux I would be whole so you wouldn't have to deal with this kind of stuff that you mentioned.

@@brucesalisbury222 Even worse. Windows 10 was meant to be the last Windows and just updated, now Microsoft want money again and are releasing Windows 11 and ending support for 10 in 2025....... It would be nice if BI could run on Linux. I know there is an unofficial "docker" release, but that is still a Windows subsystem running within Docker. Guessing that there are some Windows libraries being used in BI that cannot yet be replicated in Linux properly.

Debating on going with Blueiris for a retail business... I'll be running probably close to the maximum 64 cameras..... I'm also wanting to run RAID10 so everything is redundant .... vs going with a 64 channel nvr.. with a weaker processor and power supply. Trying to keep the build under 1600 as well for the pc. Also will be running on a gigabit network, but that debate also with that many cameras installing a dual or quad nic?

Good video. My cameras are on their own NIC. The other NIC is LAN-Facing. So the cameras don't have access to my NTP server on the LAN. Does Blue Iris have an NTP server plugin or add on that you're aware of? I'm running 2016 Server and didn't want to install an NTP server on it. Thanks man!

I'm using an AMD Threadripper 2950X as my CPU and a Nvidia GTX 1080 as my GPU for a 20 camera Blue Iris system. Since I do not have Intel QuickSync, I use Nvidia NVDEC for encoding all of the videos. Do you have any suggestions or experince with this hardware setup? I have watched your videos and incorprated most of you optimizing tips (Thanks!). I also have an NVMe drive for the the Blue Iris DB and run BI from this drive. I export my archive recording to a Synology NAS.

What editing software did you use for this video, I love the overlays, big, blue arrows and the woosh sounds coming and leaving lol, Also, is it advisable running my separate pc off of the main room router to my office which is hard wired from the router? I upgraded the firmware of my reolink 810a cameras for BI, yet upon installation, I see the colored bars for a second, then unfortunately it shows "failed to connect" message and black screen. Thanks Paul for the awesome comment! I use Power Director for the editing software and I really love spending time with the post-production process. Yes, there should be no issues running that PC from router. My first guess would be the IP has changed on that Reolink camera. Verify this in the app. If the IP address is correct, I would check the brand, model and folder in BI. If that seems ok, use the Find/Inspect button next to where you set the IP address. This will reset all you configuration with ONVIF but at least you will know that BI can see the camera.

One other good topic is h264 vs h265. I switched to an AMD platform for "reasons" and very happy. So I'm doing direct to disc and have h265 setup in cameras. 265 image quality identical and 1/3 of file saves. Helps out a lot with loading, remote playback, and will extend life of drives because of small writes.

H264 or 265 dont matter on traditional HDD write, the head still has to scratch the spinning disk which will spin non-stop ;)

@@scotteaton4868 its continous writing, weither it is 10mb or ~7mb/s doesnt matter, in video surveilance there is an non-stop stream of data coming in. And yes, that platter will spin contiously due to the continous video stream. a hdd normally stops spinning after ~30seconds of inactivity on normal consumer drives. But nearly all enterprise drives dont spin down for a reason, weither with or without activity. Also WD red and other "NAS" drives dont spin down do fast as the old WD greens. Spin up - spin down cycle is worse for the drive then letting it continously spin as the air cushion is then maintained, and there is less wear and tear on the mechanical parts. Setting the platter mass in motion from 0 rpm is a very torque intensive move compared to keeping it spinning. (Compare it with towing your car by hand, getting it to move is almost impossible, but when a few friends have helped you get it moving, you can keep pushing it to the destination by yourself ;) Spinning down a drive could potentially make the head hit the platter too.

@@scotteaton4868 Did you just get your first computer? If so read up on Platter Hard Drives. Their job is spinning, all the time. Why would that be? Because they have a mass. Also, as stated by others, there are (were) fast hard drives and slow hard drives, there NO surveilence hard drives.

In the camera settings, go to the Record tab and click the button on the bottom that says, "Video file format and compression". That will bring up this option.

For most users, the bitrate of cameras is low enough that recording new clips to the surveillance drive won't be a bottleneck. In the case of less than maybe 10 cameras, there's not really a benefit to writing new clips to the SSD, and it'll wear out sooner.

Great video, not a lot new to me since I’m an old dog, though. I came specifically to understand AI capabilities of BI. Could you spare a bit of time to shoot a video on that? Motion detector, counting, tripwire if there’s any, automation with weather forecast/temperature, tie-up with security systems, analytical engine, features etc. good old time 24/7 is cool but, things I am talking about are really those where CPU/GPU utilization kick in and I found very little about it when it comes to BlueIris. Does anybody have any comments? Thank you

Just about to buy blue iris... Thanks for the clear video. One question I have is: Is it necessary to use an i7 chip? I intend t use a dedicated PC with Intel Core i5 11th Gen 1135G7 (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory, Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 1 TB PCIe SSD + 4 or more TB external HDD, a Netgear unmanaged 16-port 183W POE switch (GS316PP), (4) Ankke Turret True 4K PoE Camera w/EXIR 2.0 Night Vision, + 1 Ankke CZ400 PTZ 4MP Camera. That's my intended basic start package.

I have been wanting to try blue iris for 3 or 4 years, but it always looked waay too complicated for me! Your videos have given me hope! I am getting a new desktop in a couple of days. My old one is an HP Pavillion core i7-7700 with a 2tb mechanical hard drive and 16 gb of ram. my plan was to wipe the old one (windows 10) clean and use it for blue iris. the new one is an HP Envy windows 11, with 1tb nvme m.2 ssd and a 2tb 7200 rpm sata hdd with 32 gb ram. icore 7-12700 12 cores, nvidia geforce rtx 3050 with 8gb dedicated (i don't know what most of this stuff mean!) but kinda. with windows home. My question do I need to change anything on the old one for blue iris? or will it be good? OR SHOULD I JUST USE THE NEW ONE FOR BLUE IRIS? Hey! I agree, Blue Iris does have a lot of complex features and there are still many features I am trying to figure out. I am happy to hear that my videos help with the important stuff of getting cameras added and performance. As for the computer, your old one should be just fine for up to 15 cameras. Yes, the new one would be better but not really required. Now, if you have the budget and you want to upgrade the current one, then, why not. The RAM increase from 16-32 would be nice for general performance and the nvme and sata will help with scanning through playback footage. Honestly, I would lookup the model of the motherboard in the PC and upgrade that, or add more. Let me know if this helps or if you have questions.

11 cams on a Ryzen 1700. cpu 18%. Explored putting BI on a VM on my i5 unraid server for quicksync. Two settings: visual update rate down to 5fps, and substreams. 18% went to 6%. Huuuge. i5 would be better, but this is just fine. Thanks buddy!

Great video! That said, I've been chasing a problem with Blue Iris for sometime now, in-that my exported playback recordings(continuous) are skipping or choppy? In addition to this, I don't recall this problem before with Blue Iris, nor do get this from the camera(one single) itself, using the manufacturer software, though I can't for the likes of me figure out the cause. In search of an answer, I have stripped all of my camera's from BI, as well as removing all of the feature that I could think of, though I can't seem to find the cause of the stuttering in playback. The computer itself is very powerful(12 then i5), has plenty or ram(64gb ddr5), and has several fast storage(nvmne) solutions, of which I assigned to spread the load, starting with the fastest(gen5 nvme), then moving to a less fast ssd drive, and eventual spinning HDD - though I have yet to reach my max quota during my tests, and so I'm assuming I can eliminate storage stutter. Beyond that, CPU usage is virtually nonexistent, in that it sits around 6%, whereas exporting video will move it to around 15% during conversion. That said, I really can't think of any other reason why this would happen - the entire BI server(local dedicated hardware), has dual 10Gb NIC's, one to a dedicated 4x 2.5Gb 10GbPOE switch, and the other for client connections - with both latency and throughput measuring very high in testing - I truly have no other ideas as to what could cause this, though I'm thinking I might start installing and testing older versions of BI, to see if I can't find a version that did not do this, as I don't recall this was ever an issue in the past using this very same setup. :/ PS, for testing, I am using a single Reolink 811a camera w/all features turned off(labels, recording, trigger, etc, etc.), all settings default, 15FPS, constant framerate, etc

Is the footage choppy at the exact times in the export as they are in the playback? Is there any lag in the live main stream? I have noticed that reolink and Blue iris don't communicate well and you could end up with some choppiness and lag on export.

@@HomeTechDIY Hi, I made progress on this, and discovered the issue is somehow linked to my camera substreams. Of which I disabled, and found no such stutter, followed by turning it back-on, and it returns. No idea why this seems to be happening, though it was bad enough that I decided to move continuous recording to the Reolink software(as a windows service), and then using Blue iris to capturing and recording events. This way, I can get my mainstream recordings and clips for reference - not ideal imo, but better than nothing I guess - thanks for responding btw, I do appreciate it

The WD Purple is designed to write constant video streams. I record 7 video streams, some 2k, direct to disk. Disk utilization is only 1%. No need to write to SSD and then move clips.

Thanks for the feedback. I write the latest 24 hours to SSD for 2 reasons. 1. Most of my required playback would be from the last 24 hours and I can scan through this footage very fast, compared to BI reading from a mechanical drive. 2. If I happen to be scanning through any footage older than 24 hours from the WD purple drive, the utilization of that drive increases to near 100% and I would not want to impact the writing of footage on that same disk, or slowing down my scanning due to BI trying to record all my camera to that same resource. An SSD is not required, but more of a convenience in my situation where I have so many cameras recording from 2mp-12mp at an average of 10fps.

Yeah, most cameras have their own app and streaming the live feed and viewing playing from anywhere is possible.

I understand transferring the footage to the purple drive for storage but during the software installation, why not have the blue iris program and new footage on the same drive?

Thanks! It depends on the camera. Some cameras can use an internal Micro SD card to record motion, or maybe even continuously. If the camera doesn't have this ability, then your PC will have to be on all the time if you want to record all the time. If the camera does record to a memory card in the camera, there is no way for Blue Iris to sync up with the camera to capture that footage while the computer was off. Hope that helps.

Good question and a tough one to answer. An NVR is easier to setup and to maintain and even access remotely. They are harder to playback and export footage. A PC is can cost more, especially if it's a designated machine and it's sole purpose is to record footage. It's more complex to setup and remote access can be a little challenging if you're not technical. Playing back footage and exporting it however is very easy. The PC also has a lot more flexibility in your technical setup whereas, the NVR is already tuned to work well with X number of cameras.

Hello again, well I downloaded BI on my new computer instead of my old one. I am learning as I go. My CPU is at 19 or 20% and ram at 7.93/7.99. But I do have a question , what is the best my to set up Blue Iris mobile notifications in August 2023? I have mostly amcrest cameras so I have that app on my phone. There seems to be a lot of opinions on mobile apps for BI, I was just curious of your opinion? Thanks again for all of these BI videos!

That's awesome PC performance! I have actually never tried the Blue Iris mobile app. I use the individual apps for each camera brand. If I need to connect to my PC remotely, I use Team Viewer. It's clunky and slow but I rarely use it.

To add a little bit of security and I use to access the cameras remotely and port forwarding was required. There is not real need at this point to change the ports.

I have an intel i7-6700 system, but when I select intel+VPP, it doesn't get enabled. I wen to bios and I don't see that option you are referring to in the video. I do not have a GPU...is that why I can't enable it? - If that's the case, I thought I only needed an intel cpu to take advantage of this...didn't know I also needed a gpu as well.

Just so you know. I live in US, and the WD Purple 14TB link prices show CND. I proceeded to AMZ's last purchase step and it did not convert to USD so unable to see actual price. I'll see if I can learn how to work this out but thought you may want to know.

Good video. However, you should enable H265 in the cameras and lower their quality level. I have 30 cameras which barely write at 2MB per sec total, which any low performance spinning drive can handle easily. There's no need to keep camera quality settings high. Wastes network bandwidth and HD IOPs.

My company had blue iris camera system installed last week and though I can see the pros in this system, one really big con is that none of the cameras are in real time! There is up to a 20 second delay, depending on the camera. This is VERY frustrating since we run a business and need to know who is coming onto the property at the time they walk through the gate, not 20 seconds later. We are currently running 30 cameras, and all have a delay (or a drag), a couple are just about 5 seconds, but 90% are 15-20 seconds. Help!! The installers are telling me there is nothing they can do, but I simply can't believe that to be accurate. Since 4 cameras are closer to real time, I am confident that the others can be too. Do I need to adjust something? Where would I need to look to make an adjustment?

I bought an intel i7-6700 as it's recommended by Blue Iris. I have 5MP cameras, a total of 8 cameras with DeepStack running.. I get around 22% cpu without using sub-stream. Recently, I decided to test my Ryzen 7 3700x with BL and with the exact same setup, I get a max of 3% utilization.. again, no substream.. I guess I will be switching over to AMD.

I have made the decision today to build a new Server just for Blue Iris I have 22 Reolink Poe Camera's and my i5 Intel Core 8th Gen is not working out, I even put in an extra graphic card, ASUS Dual NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card - PCIe 4.0, 8GB GDDR6 Memory,and , so I'm going to build an i7 Intel Core i7-8700K and move the graphic card over. Sounds like a fun build! I keep my machine at about 65% CPU and I take advantage of the sub streams for display. I also bumped the frame rates down to anywhere up to 10 fps. This configuration is working great and I still love my BI dedicated PC. All the best with your setup!

If the time in the corner of the image is stuck, make sure you are streaming live feed to the Blue Iris channels and not pictures. Is the time issue with the Blue Iris overlay or from the camera itself?

The license is a yearly purchase. To continue using the software with updates, an additional year can be purchased here: blueirissoftware.com/#download BUT... if you are able to revert back to your previous version of Blue Iris (or find the previous version on line) and not update the software going forward, you should be able to continue to use it without the watermark on the screen.

Can Blue Iris wake the computer from sleep and start recording when a camera detect motion? During sleep, services can be running in the background. I am disappointed Blue Iris cannot do this

I think BI requires too many resources for it to recognize motion when sleeping. If the camera itself could send a message to the PC/BI to wake it, that could be an option, but BI's motion works by analyzing/comparing each frame and I'm not sure if that can be put into a "sleepable" service. The wake time for the PC and then the HDD's would have to be very fast to ensure no footage is missed. Even if it's 5 seconds for everything to spin up, you'll miss that footage. The user would also need to ensure the NIC wasn't included in the services which turned off as well.

So here we go Microsoft, a use case for you: When the computer enters sleep mode, a user should be able to select, at least, one service to prevent it from stopping. Quick question, can u run Blue Iris and Hikvision software at the same time? I have my doubts if Hikvision by itself can store the footage of the stream in your pc. They got rid of the storage server. Does it mean i need to use Blue Iris for camera footage storage and hikvision for just intercoms?

Yes, you can run multiple camera management tools at the same time. I run Blue Iris 24/7 but also use the Hikvision app and the Reolink app all at the same time. Multiple applications can "tune into" the feed from the cameras at the same time.

*ALSO THE FRIGGIN RECEIVE BUFFERS OMG!* Whatever possessed them to set it to 6.0mb per camera! "The receive buffer is generally set large enough and you should not need to alter this. However for very high bitrate cameras (8192 kbps and above perhaps) on very busy systems (high CPU utilization) it may be required to increase this to up to 20MB to avoid a buffer overrun or dropped packets." Now I get high resolution 3072 x 2048, 8192kbps, at 20 fps !

Folks should be aware that direct-to-disk recording is disabled in demo mode. As soon as I entered the registration key and rebooted, CPU use dropped like a rock.

What they need to really do with Blue Iris is make it for Linux or its own standalone software. I would pay 4 times as much for such a software, Because with it being used on windows it uses way to much cpu because windows is so waist full When hardware systems use linux and low power CPU's and can run 50 to 60 cameras with out breaking a sweet. Do this on a windows system and you are using 100% cpu. I would love to have my cameras at 100% resolution all the time but cant because of windows. . have to run sub stream's just to bring the cpu usage down but lose some functions and detection because of crappy video. and now with Deepstack now part of Blue Iris now back at high cpu usage.
