'11 BMW 135i Auto Leveling Headlamp Fix

This is a quick recording I made troubleshooting my 2011 BMW 135i (N55).
It had an issue with the headlamps constantly resetting / re-leveling whilst driving. This occurred with both high beams and low beams (on both sides in sync). I made this for anyone out there who runs into the same problem hoping it will help them.
If requested, I can add a video showing removal and installation of a new sensor.

This helped me because the dealership is telling me my problem is something like this. I believe it is not because my symptom is that only the right side is stuck pointing down and outwards. They "fixed" it by maxing out the height adjustment screw, but the aim is still below the left one and the projection cut-off line is slanted. I believe it is internally mechanically broken and now hinges on the adjustment arm instead of it's swivel joint. This exact problem happened 6 months ago and they found it real quick when I had to buy a whole new assembly. Now that it's on warranty they can't seem to find anything wrong, aside from it seems a sensor came disconnected since our last visit. The sensor is front and rear not left and right. That's why your sensor issue affects both sides.

Update: it's the wiring harness and pin connectors. Expect a follow up video tutorial.

Hey, I have the same leveler on my 130i. The metallic arm has disconnected from the suspension arm. How do you plug it back in as i'm unable to push it back in so my headlamps are constantly pointing down.

Any news on this update video, maestro? I bought a M135i 2014 and it has this problem. Shpuld i check the contacts and the control box and check them for sealing/contact issues? Did this helped in your case? Best regards!

@@motorhead16 it wasnt the control box in my case. my only option was to leave the sensors unplugged and tie off the electrical connectors for the auto leveling sensors. I don't have the car anymore, but that's the way it was left.

Thank you for the video . After dealer changed my suspension that warning sign appeared , when I call them they said easy fix but never told me what was the issue . It was a long time ago and never went to that dealer again . I checked many videos ,and they said it maybe because of sensor arms backward. Front one I checked and it was ok but I can’t even see the rear ones orientation .

I was unable to ever correct this; to "fix" it, just disconnect the sensor.

Hi Bastian, recently I have the same issue on my 08 335xi. Your video helped me a lot to locate the sensor and diagnose the problem. But I am wondering does the car just have 2 sensors (front & rear driver side) or totally 4 sensors (passenger side also)?
@bastiand.771

Only the two.

Hi Bastian, so your headlights would do the startup sweep constantly whilst driving? Mine is the opposite - no sweep on startup, it just starts up in a fixed height
@bastiand.771
@bastiand.771 6 лет назад
Julian Seeto yes. Up and down sweep while driving :( The issue came back, so I unplugged the sensor again just as shown in the video. Very annoying to deal with.

Hi, I have an issue where both light don't turn s when turning the steering wheel and one of them does not go up or down any advice? No fault codes showing

The motor that controls side to side motion differs from the auto leveling. This is a different mechanism, though for both to be failing at the same time that's odd. Regular OBD2 scanners won't pick this up, and a diagnostic test of the BCM (Body Control Module) may or may not indicate an issue. Short of getting a BMW specific scan tool, your best bet may just be to have either a dealer or independent BMW mechanic verify this. Fixing it, I'm not sure which sensor this is -- sorry. Good luck on your search!

@@bastiand.771 got cha! Well appreciate it any way. I'll probably have a dealer look into it. I know it might cost a pretty penny but it's driving me bananas seein them uneven when I'm driving lol. Thanks 👍

J05ephx as a temporary fix unplugging the sensors should work, though the arm is a ball joint and should pop back into place. Take a look at diagrams on RealOEM to get a better idea!

It needed to go in at a specific angle. Was a pain in the ass lol.

Hi, My name is Alex, I have a '09 E93 ... My headlights are not leveling up and down, side to side no problem. Headlights are new, just 6 months old. They are working fine side to side but when I start the car you can see they do their thing from side to side but up and down they try to move but you can see that they are not really leveling the way it should. I will check the rear sensor and rear arm today, but I would really like your advice. Thanks

same problem, did you just have to find the right angle and smash it back in?

Hi, I have the same year, same car. my headlights are actually cockeyed, the projectors are pointed inwards, I unplugged bother sensors and nothing happened. Any idea what I should do?
@bastiand.771

hansel george Those sound like the left to right aim which doesn't have anything to do with these sensors. It could be the Footwell module. The only way to verify that is via dealership diagnosis (or BMW tool). You can try setting your headlight switch all the way to the right (not on auto) and see if this forces them to default. I've not had this issue, so I am unsure.

This sensor doesn't affect the left-right movement, just the auto-leveling up-down.

Was your problem resolved with the sensor change?
@bastiand.771
@bastiand.771 6 лет назад
Salvador Velasco yes. I had to get OEM ones. There's one in the rear driver's side wheel well as well that's a pain to get to, but doable. Same exact sensor. Replace both and you should be golden. In this case I believe it was actually the rear sensor being bad, but maybe one sensor unplugged shuts the feature off virtually stopping the problem. Check Rock Auto for parts or get OEM from Pelican Parts, Turner, or a dealership.

Bastian D. I was hoping to avoid buying two sensors but this gives me peace knowing that this will fix it at least. Thanks!
@bastiand.771
@bastiand.771 6 лет назад
Yeah I hear you on that one. You could try replacing one and seeing if the problem persists. Then if it does, replace that other instead and reinstall original in the "good one".. if it's still a problem then it was both (what are the odds?!) Up to you -- I'm by no means an expert.

Bastian D. Exactly how hard is the rear to get to??? I realize it’s the exact same sensor but no one appears to have one listed for anything but the “front.” Meaning it’s not labeled to be used for the rear. I have a 128 w/sport suspension so I would imagine I have the same setup as you. If it’s that big of a pain to get to, I really hope the front is the issue.
