Demo painting of an Apple.
This series of videos gives techniques, brushes and papers, and, using these, explains how to paint watercolors using Photoshop. The videos are NOT about cloning from photos ... they are about painting as you would with natural media ... brush and paint on paper.
The same techniques can be used with versions of Photoshop from CS through to CS6.

Many thanks Robert! I've been a bit amazed too at how powerful Photoshop is for watercolour painting ... I hope you have lots of fun with it! I think you'll find that once you get the hang of digital watercolor painting (when in doubt create a new layer!) that you'll create some wonderful paintings. Robert

Hi Robert ... you may have replaced rather than loaded the watercolor actions, in which case you would now only have the watercolor actions. You can re-load the default actions (just do a load rather than replace) and you will then have both the default and watercolor actions. Robert

Hi Robert, I was amazed by your work, I have have a one question - how did you make the color palate. can you show me please.

Hi Robert, The action go red if one of the steps cannot be carried out. If you uncheck the 'Button Mode' you will be able to see all the steps (the button mode is at the top of the action drop-down-list ... top right). With the Button Mode off you will be able to see where the action fails. For Make Edges there's not a lot to go wrong ... perhaps you don't have the layer selected, for example? If the action failed the last time round it doesn't mean it won't work this time :) Robert

Love this video Robert. When creating the paint palate, I put it on another layer so I couldn't just easily make it invisible once I don't want to see it. But then I can't access the colors. How did you do it on yours?

Hi Robert - it seems you have something messed up in Photoshop. what I suggest is that you do a Photoshop preferences reset: (hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file. Or you can search for a *.psp file and delete it. It will be called something along the lines of "Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp". If that doesn't work then it's a Ps re-install I'm afraid.

I love the real watercolor look you achieve with these brushes. Are they good for Mac too?

Yes of course, Janet. But the brushes I'm using in this video are only available from CS5 up. You can use other brushes to do the same thing in CS4 down. Robert

Robert Ardill no worries, I am running the latest version. I just purchased the brushes. I am awaiting for my download links.

Janet Garcia You should have received them automatically Janet. Have a look in your spam folder (but I'll resent them anyway).

yes, I got it. It went into spam because of the 'donation' word on the titles. Google flagged it. I am trying now to figure how to use them.

Hey Robert, I reset the preferences and the greyed out Actions now seem to work. Hurray. But there are now a handful of your watercolor actions that don't; they have a red check next to them and some of these are actions i've grown quite fond of (Make Edges and Make Pooling in particular). Any idea why they aren't working now? Am going to buy/download your latest CS6 Tools and reinstall to see if this remedies things. Many thanks for your patience, Robert. And for sharing your genius.

Hello, I recently bought your set and I'm so happy with it! Thank you for the AMAZING work you have done! I have a question: How do you rotate your brush on the go. I can't seem to find a shortcut for this. I know where the control to do this in the pop up menu is but I was wondering if there is a shortcut. Thank you!

+Katya Petrova (CherryWorkshop) Hello Katya ... unfortunately this means spending a bit of money. You need the Wacom Art Pen. This gives you rotation (as well as tilt and pressure, of course). It's a bit expensive, but it does make a big difference, especially for flat brushes. Robert

Hey Robert, yes...I've been using many layers + grouping them. I need to get better about flattening after I've gotten things looking ok. But speaking of this, I have two questions. Do you know how or why the watercolor actions might have removed the default actions (can't create record or create any new ones)? I used to be able to create actions for batch processing images, but now I can't. Curious if this is something you've encountered. WIll reloading default actions override yours? Thanks.

Hey Robert! Very usefull tools, congrats :) It's what i've been looking for. Im a total noob on digital painting, so I wonder if these brushes can be loaded on two computers once I purchase them? Thnx. Gina
@SceneShifts
@SceneShifts 8 лет назад
+ginnamour Hi Gina ... yes, you can install them on other computers as long as it's for your own use. If you are running a business and the two computers will be used by different people then the license requires that you purchase two copies. Cheers, Robert

Hey Robert, I wish it were as you suggest, but the default actions were not replaced by the watercolor actions. The snag is I can't create any new actions. The "New Action" through "Playback Options" selections in the Actions flyout menu are all greyed out and unselectable. Deleting all actions and reloading them does nothing to resolve this. Was just curious if you knew of a solution because there are occasions when it would be helpful to record a new action. Have Googled it to no avail.
