Just what to understand how this works. Is not that the Hanging Beams run parallel to the joists, and the Hanger runs at right angles from the joists? The hanger is checked out to receive the hanging beam? Thanks

Hi Sam, yes it would, just think about it like if you pulled that wall out would the ceiling still be safe. If you were to pull that wall out you would have to do something else to support the ceiling like a beam or larger ceiling joists so the hanger is not required. Hope this helps.
Hi At the ends of ceiling hanging beams where the top surface is profiled to the roof slope: . Does the beam have to maintain minimum depth of (D/3 or 100mm)? . How is this achieved in a hip roof, for support at the external wall? For example, say the rafters are 150 deep, and the ceiling joists are 95 deep. The ceiling hanging beam will be tapered down to 55mm depth at its end? Thanks
Hi Mate, AS1684.2 Timber Framing Code (for Australia) states "Where the slope of rafters is such that the depth of a hanging beam has to be reduced by more than two-thirds in order to avoid interference with roof cladding, the provision shall be made for additional support incorporating a jack ceiling joist (trimmer)" In other words, a trimmer should be installed running from the top plate to the ceiling joist, under the hanger to effectively thicken the beam where it joins the plate. @@Buildsum Hi Thanks for pointing that out. I notice also that the code says to bolt the hanging beam to the rafter. Presumably the bolted connection to the rafter is what predominantly supports the hanging beam. The jack ceiling joist under the hanging beam, relies in turn on being supported at the first typical ceiling joist, which in turn hangs from the hanging beam. This seems to be a circular argument in regard to which element supports the other. Granted, however, just having more timber under the hanging beam has to increase the shear capacity.
John I wondered about a situation where the hanging beam ends at a wall but won't land on a top plate? eg one of the walls is external and higher than ceiling height (ie side wall of a skillion roof). Is it acceptable to vary the hanging beam's exact position to land that end directly on a jack stud fixed to one of that walls common studs? Otherwise how is that situation normally resolved?
Is there a site or some places in nsw where i can up for advice for a job i am getting. I am carpenter contractor and am experience in framing but somtimes i just need to get an opinion in regards to the right strutting beams/counter beams and hanging beams. Thanks
Hi Phillip, that would be a very complex ceiling and if I had that situation I would look at trusses as a serious option as it would probably be cheaper. However, if that is the question you are faced with this video may help, it is the same ceiling and not as complex as what you are asking but it does go into the positioning some more.
@@Buildsum it is a ceiling inside a steel framed structure I have drafting for a long time the simple case is obvious one only looks for support in the complex cases in many project houses we use UC strutting hanging beams on angles
