Another fact in the story of the rejection by the Art Institute was he DID show some talent with buildings and other structures. They recommended he apply to be an architect. However, he didn't have the necessary classes (math, sciences) to be admitted. Oddly, Stalin was also a film buff. For him it was westerns. Hitler's doctors were convinced his strict vegetarianism, is what gave him indigestion, and gas, in later life. Sometimes, so severe "Dr." Morell had to administer an opiate. Probably it was all the sweets/cakes he consumed. He was also not a strict teetotaller and would sometimes have a beer with dinner.

Hitler did not complete school, nor had he any training. The only way, of getting accepted in the art academy was via a scholarship program, for which he needed truely exceptional skills. The worst part is, Alfred Roller, a relativly famous artist, graphic designer and chief stage designer of the Vienna state Opera DID offer him a job and professional training, which he however ignored. The issue was, Hitler did not want to "work for bread". He was pretty much a guy, who wants to skip the entry level grunt work, and get right to being a famous artist.
@dohanddonuts5716

He also dealt with constipation, which is a major side effect of opiates. That a long with gas is not a good combo. I know.

The "Hitler was a bad/failed painter" thing isnt quite true: The Vienna school of art he applied to twice got over 2000 applications yearly and took in at most, 50 students. On his second application (while homeless, mind you) he came in 70th place out of 2000+. They did indeed say his people looked lifeless (the kind of thing you might learn in an art school) but highly complimented his buildings to the degree that they suggested he attend an affiliated school of architecture, and even offered him a letter of recommendation there. He thought this civic job would be too similar to his customs officer fathers (who he hated) and eventually decided to get involved in politics, instead.

He could no longer eat meat because of a gas attack during the First World War. This partially destroyed his taste buds and meant that meat simply no longer tasted good. That's why he became a vegetarian. His caretaker Herbert Döhring, who lived with him on the Berghof, said so.
@Admiral-General_Aladeen

The N*zis also encouraged vegatarianism at the end of the war because meat was expensive and not really available. Also the N*zis banned or discouraged some drugs because they were bad for health (beer of course not lol). The american tabaco industry used this to advertise their products basically saying smoking is how you can show you are a real american (or a form of patriotism i think). Evil but also kinda genius.

the pretty famous german comedy movie Feuerzangenbowle, filmed in the early 40's was to be banned pre release because Goebbels didn't want a comedy film. They went to Hitler and got the cancellation cancelled. It is set in a time pre war and suprisingly (at least the common version) pretty unpolitical and neutral. So despite being filmed during he war, it is still very watchable.

My theory about the allied bombing of the doll factory is that the factory was secondary target. The primary target, like an ammo or airplane part factory, was called off due to bad weather. So the allies wanting to bomb something might as well bomb a doll factory.

I just think it’s important to acknowledge that brutal authoritarians still have some “redeeming qualities”. To not show those, we fail to explain why people were willing to follow them in the first place. That dichotomy is important to address. They’re all horrible people, but still people.
@arlonfoster9997
@arlonfoster9997 4 месяца назад
Nathan Landry exactly. It’s important to note that just because figures from the past were on the wrong side like for example King George III, Robert E. Lee, or Hitler and did horrible things at time doesn’t diminish the facts that they were human beings like the rest of us and had feelings as well. I’m a Jew and I don’t like Hitler but this video is interesting and makes me realize he wasn’t always the evil fascist dictator of WW2. I didn’t know he originally tried to go to art school. As for King George III, he did try to rule the colonies with absolute power but he did not push for the taxes on them that the parliament implemented. His more human qualities was that he loved Queen Charlotte and his 15 children and loved agricultural and hunting he loved George Frederic Handel’s music and he was a patron of the arts in England stuff which makes me realize that he was a human being and I’m an American. Doesn’t mean I am against the founders establishing a country. As for Robert E. Lee sure he may have betrayed his country and oath at the start of the Civil War but he was so much more than the Confederate general we remember. He had a familial connection to George Washington he absolutely opposed secession and loved the Union. He was superintendent of West Point and he was a rising officer in the United States 🇺🇸 Army. He was always concerned for the safety of his family during the war and after he lost he surrendered with grace and helped on healing and reconciliation between the north and south. Their beliefs I do not believe but I do not diminish the fact that they were human

During one of the episodes they read out a question from a listener: "In centuries to come, will the history books eventually forget some of the absolutely abhorrent things Hitler did, and have him considered more along the lines of histories great, yet flawed, conquers? Genghis Kahn, Napoleon, Alexander etc? All of whom were great conquerers, but definitely committed heinous atrocities along the way" (not verbatim). What are your thoughts on this?

People's political beliefs can often be very incoherent, particularly fascists. But, I think the whole 'hypocritically loved animals' thing is actually pretty explainable. To Hitler, animals were innocent. People (by virtue of being certain races and political ideologies) weren't, which justified whatever violence was done to them.

My father always used to say if Hitler wasn’t insane and evil he would have been one of the greatest leaders ever. As a kid I was always kind of shocked by that statement bc how could you praise Hitler. As I got older, it was clear my dad wasn’t praising him at all, but speaking about how this guy literally took over an entire country by getting almost everyone to agree with him ( people literally loved him and didn’t think what he was doing was wrong) and think like him etc had very very good communication skills, was effective in getting things done (yes he was a dictator so it’s easier). It is an interesting concept to think about though. What if all these insane and evil leaders used their leadership skills to do good not evil? How different would the world be? Also insane to think about if that college just accepted his damn artwork maybe things would also be different….

I think Dan Carlin said it best in that if Hitler wasn't a fascist, his rise to power would be one of the greatest political rags to riches stories in history. A homeless, art school reject who finds the only sense of comradery in his life in the trenches of WW1 only for his country to lose the war, he goes into politics to revitalize it and avenge the loss, ends up getting arrested after the overly optimistic coup attempt fails only to use it to catapult himself to even greater popularity and eventually to lead one of the most powerful states of his era is an inspiring story if it wasn't about the Nazis.

Hitler was decent enough of a painter of architecture. As for him being a vegetarian, from what I have read is he wasn’t strict, and it was his diet that caused excessive flatulence. Funny, I am making some comments before they are highlighted. I did not know about the inflatables

John Keegan wrote about his "management skills" in Mask of Command. He varied from total indolence to bursts of manic work. We also know from Traudl Junge that working on his perwsonal staff was perfection. Very little actual work,good pay , access to the above mentioned cream cakes ( given the rationing in in Germany that is remarkable0 and long days where the most taxing thing wss lpretending to listen to the endless monologues on whatever subject had inspired him at that given moment. I guess she was either spared or ignored the fercious browbeating rants that he was capable of. Germany's top General appararently came out of one such scolidng describe as looking "white as a sheet". Gantz gives a great impression as to what it could have been like, As to the UK based brother. He was supposed to have lived in Liverpool. There are rumours of a visit by the man himself. Rumour also sayst that the man's house was demolished in a Luftwaffe air raid.

The debate about the level of evil of Hitler is a fascinating one, regarding the difference between allowing horrific things to happen... ordering horrific things to happen... and actually doing those horrific things. As far as we know, Hitler possibly/probably killed one person himself, his half-niece lover. That situation is a whole clusterfuck. But I think most people consider domestic violence and racially-based murder to be acknowledgably different. If there are Nazis who are more evil than Hitler, Reinhard Heydrich has to be on the short list. Mengele is another obvious example. A lot of people jump to the comparison of Charles Manson, since he didn't actually commit any of the Tate murders himself. But he killed plenty of people in the decades prior to those infamous crimes. He had *no problem* committing the act of murder, he was just making his followers do the crime. NONE OF THIS is anything more than an academic discussion. It doesn't diminish the evilness of Hitler. It's an analysis into the meaning of the concept of evil. Not for everyone, but I do personally find it interesting because the concept of humanity's evilness to humanity fascinates me on certain levels.

I suspect the inflatable doll plant was bombed because there's a good chance rubber products were used in the manufacturing. Rubber products are used as a binding agent in explosives, making the plant a viable wartime target.

In terms of technique, his was about the same as a middle or high schooler. Upon closer scrutiny, most of his paintings are incorrect in terms of perspective and scale

A doctor once told Hitler, his stomach problems was because he was eating soup all the time. Which was the reason why he was passing gas and having stomach problems. It was said he got that habbit due to him moving around Germany in his early years living in the streets, and eating soup was common back then and today lol.

The Anti-Smoking campaign in Nazi Germany was definitely health related. Germany was the first country to link lung cancer with tobacco smoking based on epidemiological studies. Hitler even thought he was too lenient when confronted with a study that showed higher rates of heart attacks among smoking soldiers on the Eastern Front . 1945 was not just a victory for the Allies, but also for tobacco companies. GIs brought cigarettes of brands like Lucky Strike and in Post-War Germany grew a new generation of nicotine addicts.
