Fun fact of the day: the attention span of a goldfish is apparently around 9 seconds, which is longer than what is currently believed to be the attention span of a modern human at 8 seconds, so I apologize to all of the goldfish I may have offended with my intro.

Yes apparently Brits also pronounce St Louis wrong but they are probably just pronouncing it the way they heard it sung in the song Route 66.

@@Phiyedough No, the 1904 song “Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis”, that was from the USA, internationally incredibly popular, and dependent upon the French pronunciation.

Lots of examples of pronunciation changes evident from Hollywood movies. In early 20th century, US actors copied British pronunciation but that changed over time. You can see aan obvious example : the drug quinine is pronounced kwin-een by the Brits, ditto early Hollywood. Now the US have changed it to kwynyne. Modern Americans seem to not understand the historical origins of words and so pick out a familiar syllable and pronounce it as it looks ie - nine & then add the rest of the word. Also rout for route{a French word meaning street) though I'm not sure where skeddle/skedyoool came from. & vee-hic - le always sounds like the speaker has just driven over a speedbump. We'll still keep trying to understand y'all.

Traditionally, here in the UK, the week starts on a Sunday. When I was a kid in the 1960s all calendars and diaries began on a Sunday but that changed in about the 1970 to reflect a more "Business" way of doing things. 🙂

I am in the UK and some time back had my first denture fitted. I asked the dentist about cleaning it and she said just brush it with some soap. I said do you mean soap like tablet soap. She then said, no, washing up liquid. So I said that that's detergent not soap. That dentist is the only British person I have met who called washing up liquid soap. So glad I didn't take her at her word.

In the UK, the calendar week begins on Sunday. The working week starts on Monday. A weekday is any of Monday to Saturday. Weekends are Saturdays and Sundays in pairs. Long weekends also can include the adjacent Fridays and/or Mondays.

I am British and have lived in the UK almost all my life (apart from when I went abroad for a few years), and whilst I do see some calendars with Monday as the first day, all my calendars have always had Sunday as the first day. I haven't had to go out of my way to find special calendars, or anything; Sunday first is just a fairly normal option.

If the country name was spelled as “Barbadose” then of course, you would pronounce the name as Bar bay dose - but it does not have that letter known (to me and children around the same age as who were taught HOW to spell at school 😉) as the “magic letter E” at the end, which changes the (phonetic) pronunciation of most words in the literal English language. So, IMO, the “correct” pronunciation as it is spelled Barbados … is Bar bay doss…(as it doesn’t have that magic letter E at end)

American Country Rock band "Poco" have a song entitled "Barbados" and they pronounce it The U.K way. Also the word "Caribbean" is interesting as I've heard Americans pronounce it several ways.

Thanks for the video. It was interesting thinking about which day starts the week. At Oxford University, weeks begin on Sunday. So, Saturday of 4th Week is the day before Sunday of 5th Week.

Hi, I always enjoy your videos. Also we do have Summer camps here. My 4 kids would go to one called PGL for 2-3 weeks at a time. They are also open at Easter. They loved it! You can choose to door variety of activities or choose something like Horse back riding, or even singing/dancing, 4 wheeling. You stay in cabins. They have various sites all over the UK or you can go to France.

G'day Fron Oz! Here we use leash not lead(mostly) &dishwashing liquid...Here calendars are of both types and depend on the origin of the manufacturer but generally in Australia Monday is the first day of the week...Costa Rica, Costa del Sol etc we use the original Spanish pronunciation with the short o not the American long o...Similarly we use the same pronunciation as the British but also the same as a Jamaican friend of mine uses...Sinc you now live in the UK you should be aware that sledging is also a common term in Cricket for verbal niggling by fielders close to the opposing team batters... Sledging is a summer and winter activity Winter on the snow obviously but in Summer on the crickets fields of England it’s a form of communication most commonly deployed when our Aussie mates are in town

Mostly here in Australia we use the same terms as the UK but for sledding or sledging, we use tobogganing.

I'm British but spent many years living in Denmark. When I arrived I couldn't speak the language, but luckily most Danes spoke perfect (Americanised) English. I live back in the UK now, but still say things like 'apartment' instead of 'flat' and noticed during the video I pronounce some things the American way. Funnily as well, while I lived in Denmark I spent a lot of time with other Brits and we would even use the American terms when speaking together.

Yeah I was always brought up being told it was Sunday officially in the UK. But like the mishmash of our imperial vs metric I just assumed it was interchangeable. I personally have always considered the start to the week as Monday. It just always made sense to me from school.

I'm with your husband on the pronunciation of lasso. But I'm not surprised you were unaware of the difference until you had been here for some time - its just not a word used much here these days. But when I was teenager in the 1970s there were Western/cowboy films and TV series on all the time, so we all knew about ranchers on horseback lassoing cattle. I've no idea whether these were American or British productions - I 'd vaguely assumed thet were mostly American - but that loop on the end of a rope was always pronounced 'lassoo' (with the emphasis on the second syllable).

For me (UK) week starts Monday. Lassoo for me too. I am into electronics and have for some years noted the Americans pronounce 'Solder', as in soldering wires, 'Sodder'. Whereas I and other Brits pronounce it as 'Solder'.

Calpol - keeping new parents sane for sixty years! It's 44 years since I was a new parent last so I'm old enough to remember when BBC1 showed a black-and-white Western every Saturday night - not necessarily a classic like Red River or High Noon either but one of the many oaters that have so sadly been lost to the video/DVD age - and I'm pretty sure I never heard lasso pronounced anything other than 'lass-oo'. I would struggle, too, to think of any British context for the word. (Kalyn, I'm not sure if you are seeing these comments. I only just discovered your channel in the last few days and then I came across the video where you said goodbye)

If you do a language deep-dive, then the boating accessory the 'BUOY' in one to discuss. The delivery of that one word is ENTIRELY different, Stateside they seem to go with 'Boo-ie' where as in the UK, it's 'Boy'.

🇨🇦 I love all your comparisons. All the American ones apply here, with some minor differences. We do say sledding, (and not sledging), but we also say toboggan and tobogganing, from the Native Indian word toboggan. Canadian Netflix is also supposed to have the best movie selection, but otherwise is pretty similar to Netflix U.S.

🇬🇧 Hi Katlin! I absolutely love your channel as I am very into all-things American as I have long-time friends over there & watching alot of your TV Shows. Another pronunciation of words with ‘o’ in them I know is when you guys mention ‘Victor Van Gogh’, you’ll typically emphasize ‘Go’ as in ‘van go’ were us Brits, Scots etc will say ‘van Goff’. I hear that a lot from your side! When you were talking about Netflix Accounts not being Region-Specific, meaning your account can access American or Canadian shows when over there… well RU-vid is like this as well, when it comes to Commercials or Ads, so when using RU-vid over here, you’ll get the UK ones before, After or in-between videos, in the US, CA etc you’ll get ads relevant to populations of those countries and Google-Ads are the same! Using an VPN that has servers in other countries has informed me of this and when I use an American VPN at times, I’ll often just Sign Out of my Google/RU-vid Account so I’ll get those American Commercials on YT etc for the fun of it & curiosity because as I’ve said at up top I’m very interested in your culture ;)!

If you are in for exmaple the UAE, then Sunday is the start of the week. Their weekend is Friday (the day they attend mosque), and Saturday, and they work Sunday to Thursday. Here, we work Monday to Friday, and our weekend is Saturday and Sunday (the day we mostly don't attend church). So Monday is the start of the week, and Sunday is the end. I say lasso the same way you do, and I think most people in Scotland would.

Buoy and buoyant have different etymologies. An old Dutch word for signal and a Latinate word for floating. The spellings merged, but the US pronounciation didn't

Some are curiosities of no real moment that you spot in passing while others have sparked your curiosity and imagination. Hi Kaitlyn, interesting to hear the different pronunciations for Costa Rica. I’m Canad, so I would pronounce it similar to the British. Although Barbados, I would pronounce it similar to the Americans, which seems very odd. As for Formula One, I live very close to Toronto Ontario Canada, so we do have formula racing every July in what is called exhibition place in Toronto. Exhibition place every summer holds CNE, which is the Canadian national exhibition, and that area gets changed around for Formula One racing. I know NASCAR is a more American thing.

Not just the 'O' in Barbados, but also the 'A' in Adolf and the 'I' in Iran/Iraq. Probably more out there but it's 02 : 40 and I'm still on my first cup of tea. Never ever heard of Hay-fever being referred to as Seasonal Allergies outside of US films/TV in the UK.

A very close American friend called the nuts, ‘pee-carns’. I being English called them pecans,with syllables only. He told me Brits pronounced it all wrong. I later found out plenty of Americans pronounced in the ‘English way.’ It was a regional thing! Enjoy your channel!

The difference between the pronunciation of Lassoo, is partly to do with the early Hollywood pronunciation of the word (the same as the English), plus partly of course we spell it differently with two "o"'s. And no we do not mispell it, in 1915 we spelt it with two "o"s as in when we built the Royal Navy ship, HMS Lassoo - a Destroyer class ship. Lasso is a recent update to the original spanish? version

The toothbrush was invented (like most things that aren't Chinese) in the UK by a William Addis (1734-1808) who produced the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780. The company survives.

My Dad, born in 1920, said and had hay fever his entire life. I’m sure it was what his mother said and had. They both were born in California. I just looked it up in M Webster. They said noun Definition : an acute allergic reaction to pollen that is usually seasonal and is marked by sneezing, nasal discharge and congestion, and itching and watering of the eyes - called also pollinosis First Known Use 1829, in the meaning defined above. Unfortunately, the dictionary doesn’t say where the word came from, but I’m thinking that it came from the western part of the United States, where hay is grown. I just found your channel and I’m liking it very much. Thank you.

It was a Sunday when I was young, Monday is a fairly recent thing. To pronounce a soft "o" it should be followed by a single consonant the an "e", for a hard "o" it should be followed by a double letter, not always but as a general rule (the same applies to other vowels). I've only ever heard of lass-oo but the spelling does lend it to lass-o. The one for me is aluminum vs aluminium. Unfortunately there's too many nonces here to send children away to a summer camp.

You mentioned Camp America. There's a British organisation called BUNAC (British Universities North America Club) that started out arranging for university students to get jobs as camp counsellors in US summer camps. These days, they also cover Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. Back in the mid 1980s I spent two summers, while I was at university, working through BUNAC as an activity specialist (teaching sailing) in US summer camps. Maine the first year and then Pennsylvania the second year. It was a lot of fun. They cover getting you a visa etc and discounted flights and you get all your food and accommodation plus paid minimum wage. You typically work for 8 weeks and then that gives you a couple of weeks afterwards to explore the country before heading back to university for the start of the new year.

Nice review. Did Camp America in 82,83,84. Now live in Cincinnati. Not sure it is still in print but an American living in London wrote a book Brit think American think, Things like no one would name there child Randy in the UK OH some bloggers in Cincy do reaction vids to your presentations.

Wonder how many cap America marriages there have been, mine lasted 14y she lived in Hertfordshire for 12y. Not to bore you to much first day she was in England living I told Erin to go to a butchers shop (real one) and get a chicken. I came home and she was complaining that the butcher asked her if she wanted the head and feet she said no. Then she complained that he just choped them off right infront of me, I said well you knew chickens came with heads and feet right? Of coursed divorced but 14 nice years no need to respond. My Nefue who I have never seen got a place on CA was looking forward to seeing him,but canceled due to Covid, sad. I said no reply but what rejon camp did you meet your husband in I was in up State NY Catskils. Sorry seems like a firs chapter.

This is such an interesting question. I moved job and worked shifts and the place I worked was open 24/7 365 so I was so confused when the rota started on a Monday. When every other department within the same place had started on a Sunday. As a shift worker this had a huge impact on my work week. As some months are 5 weeks. Interesting. Still not sure what is right 😂

Sunday has always been the Sabbath - the day of rest, and of worship, in Christian countries - not Saturday. (For Jews, obviously, it's Friday.) For Christians, Sunday is the _seventh_ day - not the first.

While I was in Barbados for their independence ALL the locals pronounced it the British way. It hadn't changed years later when I visited again. I attended a "camp school" for one school term as a kid, it no longer exists sadly, that was very like the US summer camp but in a school term. We did formal lessons in the morning but had "activities" in the afternoon. These were pretty much "learning" but mostly outdoors and fun. There were a number of others there who attended all year round as a kind of boarding school, I was only about 12 so didn't catch the true facts that these were mostly kids with poor family circumstances being supported by the social services.

2:18, just to be pedantic, if the week goes M-Su and Sa/Su are considered the “weekend”, then really only Sunday is the weekend because there’s another day of the week after Saturday. However, the ends of a book are the front cover and the back cover and thus Sa/Su can be the “weekend” when they are on opposite ends of the week.

I've never known an American who has not heard the term Hayfever. I thought hayfever could be year round while seasonal allergies are seasonal. I thought you were gonna say that Seasonal Allergies is what they call it in the UK. lol Maybe it's an age thing. JUST CHECKED: Hayfever is pollen from grasses,, trees and weeds. Seasonal allergies can include environmental allergens during specific times of the year. I think the 2 terms are different and specific. 🙂

One big reason for the lack of interest in Formula 1 / F2 / F3 / Fe in the USA, is probably because the USA has never been able to produce a successful Team, though occasionally a driver from the USA has had some success driving for a european manufacturers team. Nascar cars are all built to a specific formula I understand so all pretty much the same, whereas in Europe / Asia the emphasis on Manufacturers teams has been technical innovation

It might be ignored, but brits generally follow the rule of pronouncing the A,E,I,O,U sounds when there is an e after a consonant eg. Pace, take away the e and it’s Pac (pack.) Americans seem to pronounce vowels how ever like cApo, tomAto, theAter, tinnItus etc.

I pronounce it Costa because that's how the brand was introduced to me and we used to have a neighbor, Mrs. Costa, pronounced the same way. If I see Costa Rica, then I say it the long O way.

So Americans might say bother to rhyme with father, and mozzarella becomes mutsarella or moatsarella, and Costa becomes coasta. It's also why you said calpole rather than calpol.

Don't go down the pronunciations rabbit hole. My wife is English. I am Scottish and we fought quite hard for the first thirty years we were together about how particular words should be spoken. There is no consistency. Just accept that there are differences then you can fight about something else.

In all the British/American videos I have seen no one ever mentions the use of cotton and thread. Americans say a spool of thread and Brits say a spool of cotton. Can cause a lot of confusion!

The weekend, as we know it, was actually 'born' in Manchester, England. Employers in the 1800s were persuaded to give workers Saturday afternoon off work in addition to Sunday. In time this was extended to all day Saturday and Sunday. So it makes sense that the British week starts on Monday

Nations separated by a common language. To be fair in the UK we love to do the same thing between counties let alone from north to south and east to west.
