As the death toll from Hurricane Helene continues rising, WRAL News is learning more about a family killed in a landslide in a neighborhood residents called "Craigtown."
Craigtown is well over 80 years old. My Mama, Cora, was born in the log cabin that used to be at the top of the mountain where Craigtown basically started. .she was number 7 of 8 children. She would be 90 on her next birthday and the craigs lived there before that. During the winter, they would move into Oakley because of weather. Snow trapped them in Craigtown. The kids couldn't go to school, etc. I'm 71 and grew up in that cabin. My mom inherited it. My grandfather was Samuel Clingman Craig (1 of the 11 siblings who lived in Craigtown.). Craigtown was very well settled and aged when I lived there.
Oh, btw, .. I was in Craigtown a month ago to see the place. God knew what was coming and gave me and my sister a last farewell. Little did we know it was the last time we would see our childhood home.
