11 MORE confusing electrician code terms - UNDERSTANDING THE NEC (PART 2)

Let’s face it…the national electric code book is probably the most difficult construction document to read and understand. It’s written like a court document in legalese, using terms none of us use in the field, for the sake of liability and C.Y.A. These are 11 terms that are used in the NEC that I feel people struggle with understanding when they first buy a code book.

#1 - BRANCH CIRCUIT
Branch circuits are the most common circuits that we deal with on a daily basis. Branch circuits are the conductors that begin at the last breaker (over-current device) and end at an outlet. Remember from PART 1 of this series that an outlet is not a receptacle, it is a place where power is “taken” from for equipment. You may have multiple electrical panel-boards that have multiple branch circuits coming out of them. Branch circuits come from breakers, but do not feed other breakers. They only feed outlets.
#2 - MULTI-WIRE BRANCH CIRCUIT
Multi-wire branch circuits are similar to standard branch-circuits in that they originate at a breaker and feed outlets. However they differ becuse they have 2 or more circuits in the same cable assembly/conduit. An example of this is 12/3 MC cable. 12/3 has 2 hot (ungrounded) conductors feeding from 2 breakers on different phases, both independent circuits, and a neutral (grounded) conductor all in the same run. Both hots share one neutral. Another example is 12/4 NM (Romex) cable. 12/4 has 3 hots, and one neutral. The benefit of this cable is that several circuits can be run in one cable, rather than running several different cables.
#3 - FEEDERS
Feeders are one step back from branch-circuits when thinking about a typical electrical system. They are the conductors between the service disconnect and the next panel in the series. This includes anything along that run that is intercepted by equipment such as transformers, disconnects, etc. Feeders go from a breaker to another breaker, including any portion going to anything in-between. Really feeders are everything that is not a branch circuit, or a service-entrance conductor.
#4 - SERVICE-ENTRANCE CONDUCTORS
Service-entrance conductors are those that tie into the utility service-point, in either an overhead or underground service, and run to the main disconnect at the service. These are the first conductors run to a building/structure that we deal with as an electrician. From this main disconnect, any conductors that leave this service panel are either feeders or branch circuit conductors. Many people mistakingly call appliance conductors for furnaces and ac’s feeders, however these are still branch circuits. Feeders begin at a breaker and end at a breaker.
#5 - GROUNDING ELECTRODE
Grounding electrodes are conductive materials installed in the earth, that help to form a bonded connection between earth and the electrical system. They have a conductor (grounding electrode conductor) that bonds the electrode with the equipment grounding conductors and neutrals (grounded conductors) at the service. It’s extremely important that all of these components are bonded together to keep all of them at the same potential. Grounding electrodes can be many different things, including ground-bars, ground-plates, metal water-piping, and rebar in a concrete slab.

Thank you for clearing up what a grounding electrode is! You have no idea how happy I am right now. I thought I was losing my mind between the grounded conductor, the equipment grounding conductor, the grounding electrode conductor and the grounding electrode. Why why why did they take such simple concepts and complicate the hell out of them with nearly identical terminology. Cheers!

If you have a fused disconnect (safety switch) next to a piece of equipment, would the wire from the panel to the disconnect be a feeder, and the wire from the disconnect to the equipment be the branch circuit? Both sets of wires would be branch circuits if it was a non-fusible disconnect, correct?

This is a very informative video to watch when a new electrician is trying to start reading the NEC book. Btw, correct me if I m wrong, a raceway also means the pathway going from a panel to the very first spot of a branch circuit, even running Romex without any conduit at a residential site.
@grounded-b937
@grounded-b937 4 года назад
negative on the Romex as a raceway. If you "sleeve" the Romex in conduit, then it's a raceway.

What tips do you have for passing the Journeyman test? i am taking practice test I paid for on "test.com" and am getting my ass kicked. only got a 60% on 80 questions, 14 of them unanswered because i ran out of time. Do you have any other good ways to study? Or prep websites? Holt is way to expensive for me.

Yes you can my friend, they're specifically listed in code, so they're ok per code. In 3 places you can read about them, Article 100, 210.4, and 393.21(B) - Not sure why they'd take them out of code but who knows, someday they may.

Brotha man !! Question ( I was told) In a commercial 800 amp main , 1st point of disconnect that the grounds and neutrals can not be on the same bar ( like in residential) they must be separated and joined by a bonding jumper .. I think this is correct but.... Its been years since Ive done one and the building has 3 -300's ( mains) and 4 subs , the main panel has 12 terms on the neutral bar , but we also have ground rods, building frame grounds, water main ground , sub panel grounds , etc etc .. I can add a ground bar and jump it to the neutral bar but ..... Oh there are smaller neut / bars beside the main neutral lugs for (?) maybe #2's and smaller - why can grounds go there????? I was told they cant in a commercial panel. ( which I didnt do ) but it seems why not- 1 ft away I have a ground bar and a jumper to the neutral bar ( its the same thing) other than looks .

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was told in my last continued education class that you can’t share neutrals for multiple circuits anymore cause it causes an unbalanced load?
@jacobmillyard6799
@jacobmillyard6799 4 года назад
It does not cause an unbalanced load. Unbalanced current is caused by unbalanced loads across the phase(s) in reference to the neutral. Common neutrals can be utilized, but the unbalanced current must be calculated and the neutral sized accordingly, and then a multipole breaker must be used.
@grounded-b937
@grounded-b937 4 года назад
Not true. You only are required to simultaneously disconnect all hots, with a multipole breaker ( or handle tie)

hmm a few of these terms could have been explained much better if you weren't considering sub panels... sub panels are common but when explaining feeders vs branch circuits you shouldn't get mixed up with considering sub panels ... residential its normally one panel
