The 11 most disappointing tourist attractions in Europe. Europe is home to many amazing tourist attractions that are famous around the world, but not all of them are worth the hype. I share the big attractions that I was the most disappointed with when I visited them. These are my personal disappointments… but don’t let me.. Or any other RU-vidr discourage you from going if it’s something you really want to see!

When you talk about London Bridge you have understand that there have been at least Three London Bridges. The Song of the bridge falling down is the first bridge. The Second London Bridge is in Lake Havasu City Arizona. The New London Bridge is the bridge you see in London today.

Fair enough on the 2 France (Im French) comments. Mona Lisa is just so small compared to most pictures & books you see (but the rest of the Louvre is magnificent so go there anyway). As for the Eiffel Tower online tickets is an absolute must. The caution is that they sell out way in advance. And the vendors .. yeah never felt too comfortable but ignore them & you’ll be fine (no worse than people selling water near the Eiffel Tower in Vegas lol) just watch out for pickpockets in Paris especially in the metro.
@sfjeanfrancois
@sfjeanfrancois 4 года назад
By the way even as a French person I find waiters at Paris cafe to be super rude. They just see tourists all year long , know you will not come back anyway (not a local repeat client) , gratuity is already included so they just don’t care ..

They changed how you view the Mona Lisa. We were at The Louvre a few weeks ago, and the set up is different now. You wait in line like at an amusement park, and then they send you up in front of the Mona Lisa in groups of twenty. You get 30 seconds in front of the painting, which is a short time. However, no one is in front of you when you view the painting. You are just feet away from her. This is a much better system than before. No “fighting” to try to get close.

When I went to Paris, I only went to the Mona Lisa to prove to myself that I managed it (i hate crowds) and I got a selfie. It was a great achievement but I didn't care much for the painting. Infact you need only turn 180 degrees and see a far better painting. Anyone who goes to the Louvre only to see ML is missing out on some absolutely amazing art, honestly. As for the Eiffel tower I agree re. The souvenir sellers, and they can be quite aggressive - I was stood in the Tuileries garden waiting for my boyfriend and this guy kept harassing me to buy a keychain and I had to quite firmly say 'leave me alone' before he got the message. Also at the sacre coeur we were sat on some steps looking at the amazing view of Paris and there were guys selling cans of carlsberg from a multipack and they wouldn't leave people alone. They spoiled what would otherwise have been s really amazing and tranquil experience, and for that I hated them haha

London bridge is not a tourist attraction. US Brits don't consider it one. Foreigners consider it an attraction because of the nursery rhyme and also because they confuse it for Tower Bridge.

Yes the queues are bad. We waited about 1-1.5h to the first elevator and some more further up. That was the only sight where we did such a long wait and we didn't regret it. It has been some years ago but there were no sellers at all. And we didn't know there were controls like at the airport (I had a pocket knife with me, which needed some effort to get it back afterwards). And what I see and read there are some places at amusement parks in the US where you wait longer just for a short ride. That's insane for me.
@PrimeInChina

Pretty much everything you said was disappointing was because of lines or people. Everyone should know by now tourist destinations have long lines. Forget the lines. The real question is, once you get through the line.. is it worth seeing or not? To me a lot of the things on this list I also experienced lines. But once I got to the point of going, it was amazing. It is unfair to say disregard something just because of lines..
@nh6227
@nh6227 4 года назад
Absolutely agree. Places like the Vatican hold enormous cultural, historical and religious significance for tens of millions of people around the world. If you understand that, you'll understand why there is a line.

3 years late to this feed - Former Resident of West Berlin 81-83 / 85-88 The real American portion of Checkpoint Charlie is located between the old US Army Outpost Movie Theater & the former American Army Library on Clayallee in what was the American Sector - right up the road from Clay Headquarters complex (former SS headquarters). The museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie pictured in the background is one of the best and most interesting museums I have ever been too - it is dedicated to the successful and those that unfortunately were NOT successful in their attempts to cross from the East - well worth your time. Having crossed Checkpoint Charlie several times in the 80's was a memorable experience!

I'm Belgian and I'm always sad to see Manneken Pis in those "most disappointing attractions" posts... It does make me wonder, what ARE tourists expecting to see when they come to see Manneken Pis?! Please let me know, I'm honestly curious :) Yes it is small, yes it is on a small corner. But as a Belgian I'm always happy to go and check on him, because he has a collection of beautiful costumes, and it's always fun to go and see him in a new costume that I haven't seen before. He even has a museum where you can see all his costumes exposed! Manneken Pis is a symbol of Belgium, not really for the humour for me, it's the story of a small baby boy who peed on the flame of a bomb and saved the city of Brussels (something like that, I don't remember the details). It is small just as Belgium is small, and I like it that way ♥ And concerning Brussels : I think the Grand Place is gorgeous, but I'd also recommend checking where Art Nouveau buildings are, there are beautiful places in Brussels!

I love Venice. I've been there a few times as it is not that far from my home. Yes, the mass of people can be bad. Showing a picture of Venice when some regatta happened where there are lots of boats is like showing a shop at Black Friday. But there are also quiet places. I like to just use the vaporettos for a good (and cheap) sightseeing trip. And if you go a bit away from the main attractions you can get good food that is not so expensive. And this city is just something special hardly compared to any other city.

Future videos? Tips on shopping and food for Europe or even Las Vegas. I love those Fiesta candies in Italy, like Twinkies with orange flavored booze covered with chocolate and Lindt Swiss chocolate. Wine all over France and Portugal. Beer in Germany and candy. Hoping to find Fiesta when I get to Milan in November. I guess it would be cheaper to order them on the internet but not as much fun to shop in local grocery stores in Europe just to see what they have. Sometimes the food is better from the market than a restaurant because there are strict food regulations in the EU, no chemicals and no ingredients like sodium benzoate or roundup, only food. yep downer moment Erin Brockovich explains roundup is everywhere in parts per million. But only in the USA.

Your video is very interesting. I went to the Eiffel Tower one night I was in Paris just 3 days so I was walking nearby and said, ok, let's try. there was almost no time for them to close it was around 10 pm I think, and even then, there was a line to buy tickets and go up, so I finally gave up. alot of people, anytime. but well, I imagine that it is essential to go to Paris and climb the Eiffel Tower. I think the Montparnasse tower has fewer queues and the views are great. I also went up there, though years ago, and I loved seeing the Eiffel tower from there. Regarding the Sagrada Familia, it is wonderful both inside and outside, you're right, it is amazing, like everything Gaudí designed. Your video is great, like all your videos. Mona Lisa - people who love art - super feeling - excitement mixed with disappointment that the picture is so small. Eiffel Tower -- my tip -> choose a line to stairs - a few times shorter and goes faster + you will work on your butt, you can rest on your way up and take beautiful and amazing pictures and you won't regret the view!!!!! The best in whole Paris... so if you want to miss it.. I highly recommend this point. Brussels - yeah - nothing to see, no attractions, only armed soldiers Mermaid - to go so far to see nothing... I agree. Venice - yeah, I was a little bit disappointing with smelt and crowds but it is beautiful city to enjoy the views. Gondolas - overrated and horribly expensive - not worth of price. Colosseum - nice place if you are interested in ancient history, nothing inside - stones and bricks. Rome is beautiful - go to some square and eat ice-creams - better spent money. Vatican - for religious people not for kids and loud people but for very patient ones. We were standing a few hours in 42 degrees in long trousers and sleeves .. unforgettable ;) London Bridge - nothing to see, go to Tower Bridge for pics Kensington Place - nothing special, custom bigger building Piccadilly - I expected who knows what - disappointment - better at night - 10 min and Soho and Trafalgar Square behind the corner Guards at Buckingham Place - I lost my patient to wait in the crowds. Too boring for me. London Eye - expensive and not the best view... but this year is 20 years celebration...so maybe this time I will throw my money in mud.. I have to think it over cause I have prepared better point of views for free Pisa - I have never been and I am not going to waste my time. Sagrada Familia - well... for me very interesting architecture, where else can you find such building? It is huge and amazing. Berlin - thank you, I will avoid. Nothing interesting but dangerous Naples - I've never been and I am not sure if there is anything interesting enough to get me there. Too much trash = stinky holidays - not for me.

Dear Chris, you reacted to my comment about driving in Naples. I want to add that my impression was the city now is cleaner then in 2011. We did a hop on hop of tour that was very agreable. The food was really good and cheap(meal with wine 15€ pp), [i am from Amsterdam], the people everywhere very polite and attentive. I work in tourism myself and if you make an effort to contact my experience is people treat you with extra care. About Venice, we once came back there on a cruise. They harboured close to the railstation. We took a watertaxi, oldfashioned wooden ones, for 8€ pp and made a whole trip through the Lagoon with 3 or 4 stops before stepping off at San Marco's Square. The gondles are a scam and we didnt like walking. Take a small regular boat and see Venice from the water

Lists like this are made by people who don't plan what they want to see. Didn't like the Mona Lisa, did you just ignore all the other art in the Louvre? Eiffel Tower? Try going up at night as the lights of the city come on. Venice? Take a water taxi to Bruano or enjoy the history. Do a little research, make a plan, find alternatives. Big deal if everything isn't a wow.

Best time for Venice is March when carnival is over and October/November. And you eat in the restaurants that are off street e.g. at the arsenal. The you take the Gondola from the tourist hotspots at the top of the season, you pay 80 €. In March you can negotiate the prices down to 30€ for an hour and then you tip them 20€.

Most major European Cities offer visitor discount cards that can be bought at the tourist offices. The cards often offer discounted access to museums and monuments like the Eiffel Tower, the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and so forth. When my mom and I went to Paris in 2008, we saw the lines at the Eiffel Tower, I took a picture of her standing under the tower with the lines behind her and she took a picture of me in front of the flagship Louis Vouitton store on the Champs Elysses, and that was enough for me given we both had been in the LV store in Beverly Hills a few months before and walked right out.

I was disappointed in Sicily. Taormina was really nice, but unfortunately we went to Catania. Graffity, rubbish, scary people and I was realy disappointed how people don't give a crap to save their heritage, their beautiful buildings, their culture etc. Never in my life had such a bumpy road too. I've heard people say that visiting the inside of Neuschwanstein Castle is a huge tourist trap. I didn't go in but saw it from outside, an amazing looking castle. I also found Checkpoint Charlie to be kitschy but enjoyable (although I love overly cheesy things like that). Leicester Square is another spot in London considered to be a huge trap, although it is near a lot of the live theater so it has that going for it.
@enailu86
@enailu86 4 года назад
It is true. Neuschwanstein is not an old castle from the Middle Ages. I'm from Germany and I know a lot more old & traditional castles, e.g. Wartburg in Thuringia (East Germany). Museums are often integrated into the other old castles, where you can see what people worn back then.

only been to Paris and London but in general I was not really disappointed by anything.. i just took everything in stride and appreciated things for what they were.. and I got a kick out of seeing the fam having fun, I think that makes a big diff on one's experience too. Tbh what I saw exceeded my expectations.

There’s a simple solution for the lines at the Vatican: get a tour guide. They’re extremely cheap and they use a different entrance, so you can skip the lines.

You seem to be that kind of tourist that complains as soon as he jumps into a cab heading to the airport. A disappointment has more to see with ourselves than with the place we're visiting.

Venice was great even as we went in the winter and it was cold as shit and the cheap ass hotel had bed bugs that ate me up at night and I also had to put on my gf stockings under my pants cus it was so cold but venice was cool either way. love all those tiny allies and bridges. every street is a picture.

Hi Chris, I am Venetian from Venice Italy, unfortunately, many restaurants just want to take advantage of tourists, like in any other part of Europe ... the rule is always to avoid restaurants nearby the main attractions. On top of that, most of the Gondolas are just for tourists and the Gondola Man wants to get as much money as possible, in particular from people who do not speak Italian / Venetian and are not local... I called it the effect of the tourist industry...

In about 1970 I went to the Colosseum the first day I was in Rome. I was the only person in line to buy a ticket. The old lady ticket seller said a ticket to go inside was 300 lira..300 LIRA!!!....I turned to walk away, then realised that 300 lira was about 30 cents...so I bought a 30 cent ticket and went inside. In those days there were no lines to get in anywhere.

We were there 8 years ago in late august and had about 3 people before us to get tickets. I liked it. Someone called it old rubble but that can be said for many old places. And they have history from centuries or millenia. But you need to really look and imagine things. That's not an amusement park with animatronics.

LOL the real london bridge of 1831 in the black and white photo is in Arizona Lake Havasu on the Colorado river. It was moved there in the 1970s by the McCulloch chain saw owner. I saw it in 1978. So it still exists but its closer to San Diego than you think! And it's only the exterior pieces of the original stone bridge which was sinking into the Thames 'temms' river which is why is was replaced in London with an ugly new bridge. I thought everyone knew this but HAHAHA. see the wiki page below.

I think the best way to see Copenhagen is by walking around on foot, and if you do so, the Little Mermaid isn’t even out of the way - it’s just at one end of the part of the city you’d be exploring, anyway.

Exactly. I did it by bike and it was only some minutes from the palaces. Google says 14min by foot from Amalienborg.

My 2 Cents (as a European (who somehow prefers to go overseas): - Never saw the Mona Lisa, but heard that a lot - I enjoyed the Eiffel Tower from the ground, but never bothered to go up; you point out why quite perfectly. Bit Paris as a whole is ok (but not much more imho) - Mannekin Pis is ok, when you knew what to expect and include it in a „pis tour“ (there is also a girl and a dog in Brussels - they really like pissing, I guess); also: I think Brussels is ok for a weekend trip, nice parks, museums, fries and pastries - Little Mermaid is disappointing, but that’s about all the disappointment CPH has to offer, otherwise, I totally love the city. Clean, relaxed, walkable (or bike-able), lots of water. It’s just nice to be there - Venice - still on my to do list (or maybe not?) - Rome - never been there, but particularly interested tbh - Vatican - never been there, no intentions to change that - London Bridge? Never knew it was an attraction. London as such is a city I love for sure - Piccadilly Circus - guess you’re right (even if not compared to Time Square) - London Eye - didn’t go there; rightfully so, I guess

The Manneken Pis may be the most famous single attraction in Brussels but the Grand Square is really the most 'touristy' place there. They have a lot of great bars and restaurants but for sightseeing, yeah theres nothing much in Brussels really.
