What I've learned from covid is to put your home office in whatever room gets the most sunlight throughout the day. At the beginning of covid I was working in the basement because I thought I had no where else but now my desk is in my living room and I realized how much natural light helps with motivation and mental health

Such a key point. My desk is in the middle of my living area, as that's where the natural light is, even though aesthetically it's not ideal. It's so nice to be able to look out the window when you're working. Dreading returning to light-less, cubicle work desks later this year.

I don't have a TV. Works fine for me. I can see everything on my iPad. I don't have the center of my life as a TV. And sometimes when you go visit someone that does have the TV as the focal point, you come in the door and they don't even turn the TV off so that you can visit, and laugh and be together. They think you want the TV on also. So you just make a mental note to stay a little while. And then you excuse yourself. It's amazing what you can learn and do and read without a television staring at you.

I love my grandma's style because she is so good about making things look fresh for a long time. Instead of doing open shelving in her kitchen, she did one or two cabinets with glass doors. I believe one of them is just cups because you don't tend to pull a lot out of those cabinets so it's easy to keep it cute. And the other is more of a display cabinet with a fun plate or something seasonal; Definitely something to consider if you're itching for that open look but with less upkeep. You can get glass that's a little frosted or funky so it's just the silhouette of the items inside and you don't have to be too particular about it. You can always change what's on display in it so freshen things up without having to do anything major.

My trend is toward minimalism. Too much "stuff" is chaotic and confusing. Disperse interesting artifacts and art as warranted in the space. Live in your home, it is not a museum. Always make your guests feel comfortable. In your budget allow for sofa cleaning occasionally. For me perfection is not an aspiration (it can only be interpreted as such by me) If my decor does not cause me stress, my guests can handle it for a short time or maybe they will choose not to visit again. .

The problem with bringing the office into a family space is this: I am on a Zoom webinar several times per month. It is a webinar to help people improve their skills in a specific area. There are 100 to 300 people on the webinar. Two people in particular have children who monopolize the parents time and are constantly interrupting/playing and the parent refuses to discipline the child or get the child out of the space. Of course, this is a discipline issue and the parent isn't doing their job. I agree with you to some extent. But not if family is in the area and you can't get any work done - in that case the office needs to have its own space.

No apparent to not being heartless by learning how to explain to a kid that they have to be in another room they have to be quiet and they have to stay in there because you're on a business conference call. For SURE. 3 kids remote learning and my husband works overnights on top of it. I have a dedicated corner in the bedroom to work from like 8-11, then I have to move to the closet from 11-1, then the living room until 3, and my son's bedroom from 3-5. The constant rotation from room to room makes me so unproductive, stressed, and flustered. Also, our great room is already a dining room, living room, kindergarten classroom, gaming center, and hobby center. There is not an inch of spare space, even if I wanted to move my office into the hub of our home. Let me long for my own space. Please. There is no shame in wanting to keep a room dedicated to the preservation of sanity.

Hello, all!! Things are getting a little heated here so I’m going to clear some things up 😊. I really do enjoy just staring at my furniture, it makes me happy to see how I have put things together, but it also is the number one spot for doggo tug of war and I’m happy it is. I think jokes don’t always come across via videos because it’s just me sitting in my living room talking to myself 😂. I love crafting a beautiful background for you all and that impacts how I use my home. Since my channel focuses on Interior Design, the way my home looks is very important to me. Just consider how silly I’d seem giving design advice with a messy background, lol! I’m still human. I have mess, I sit around in sweats on my sofa, and I have more paint on my furniture than any person should, haha. Anyway, I so appreciate those of you who are defending me and I equally appreciate those of you who challenge me. I love that we are able to engage in thought provoking conversations. She retired at a "young age" (mid 40s) and bought an ACTUAL farmhouse! Not a lick of that decor once she moved! WHY? She achieved her DREAM! She had the deco to remind her what she was working towards! You NEVER know so don't judge! My master bath is entirely beach themed! It's my sanctuary and the beach is my happy place. I just discovered your channel last week and binge watched for tips. My daughter is annoyed but relieved now -- she's been telling me to get rid of certain items in my home and change the décor (all leather / painted accent walls) for years. Now that I've found DIY with KB I'm making some much needed change after the same furniture and décor for the last 20 years.. We were at IKEA yesterday and she asked me what "my girl Keva" said about throw pillows --them made me stick with your advice! Afterwards we went to Home Goods and I actually didn't just buy random shit that didn't fit my space or style. I love your confidence and "it hurts but it's true" advice. My daughter says I needed this straight-forward talk. I look forward to more videos and insight.

I think accent walls look good in open concept homes. Otherwise everything just blends together. As long as they aren't over done or aren't in every space accent walls add visual interest and can make a room more distinctive.

Kiva, add “Books as Props” 1) Defacing them 2) Encasing them in white contact paper or burlap for ‘visual consistency’ 3) Turning book back binding to the back 4) Stacking [coffee table book] I READ my books, I derive joy reflecting on its contents whether they’re all text or more picture-based; they’re not only objects to ‘look nice’ It’s like when non-musicians have a baby grand piano with candles, crochet fabric, and pictures atop as ‘design element’. It’s not about the curvy lines- it’s an instrument to be USED, to be respected for the sounds it can emit, and to be played for one’s self and for others

I would like to know more about "not having the television as the main focal point in the room" like what would that look like? where would I position the television compared to the other things in the room?
@babe8917
@babe8917 3 года назад
We have a pretty square room so we positioned the tv on the opposite wall right by the door when you enter the living room and on the wall behind the couch we installed a paneling feature wall and placed sideboards from wall to wall. Now the focal point is that wall. We also painted it a beautiful sage and bought a chandelier in brass. The first thing you see is the wall and the tv is rather hidden and will only be seen when you sit down on the couch. Maybe rethink positioning your tv.

Do you EVER sit on your sofa? Do you let other people sit on your sofa? Furniture is meant to be used. Kind of reminds me of when I was young and my Italian friends’ parents (recent immigrants) covered their furniture and lamps in vinyl. So fun to sit on during the hot, humid summers. I don’t get it...🤷‍♀️ I don’t “hate” any design. There are designs that currently don’t fit my lifestyle but may in the future. Interior design is incredibly personal, so I say to each his/her own. (And money doesn’t necessarily equal good design-or even quality for that matter.)
@KivaBrent

I definitely do! It’s more so an ongoing joke. I grew up with an artist and we never sat on the furniture because she liked to admire her work and I respected that. I feel like as long as your colors match for the most part that you're good to go! Pick the stuff that speaks to you! But if you're still hesitant about it going together try to picture it out as best you can. Try doodling it out (even if it's not perfect) and see if you like how it looks. Or like copy and paste pictures of the product on top of a photo of whatever space you want to put it, side by side and see if it's working the way you thought it would.

All the observations seemed bang on .. one more insight I learnt after reading a book from the New York school of designs founder was if the shape is anything different from the overall shape of the room then it will seek attention so it better be something really good .. else if we don’t have design chops for it to stick to the same overarching shape of the room

I needed my own space where I could concentrate on work. It just wasn't working for me so one of my quarantine projects was cleaning out a space in the spare bedroom to set my desk up in there. I did the opposite of what she is suggesting. It also allows me to "transition" at the end of the day. I can "leave" the office as opposed to have it always there in my face when I don't want to think about work anymore at the end of the day.
