I've been wavering on whether to give Circe a try. As a history nerd, I'm always nervous about stories involving history and/or mythology, but I'm so glad to hear good things about it. Plus I enjoy character-driven stories. The Electrical Menagerie, by Mollie E. Reeder, is another great fantasy novel that could work as a standalone. It's set in a world where the continents float in the sky. The main characters are male friends/business partners who run a robot traveling circus together. The characters are beautifully crafted and nuanced, and there's a great element of mystery. It's like Sherlock meets The Greatest Showman meets Treasure Planet.

I really would give it a try! I think she does a really good job handling the mythology. And thank you for the recommendation! That sounds really interesting.

@@BeautifullyBookishBethany Thank you! I will...once I get through the frankly frightening pile of unread books on my floor, haha.

Sawkill Girls is such a fascinating read, and i'm glad there was so much diversity in it! Watching this video made me realise how few standalone fantasies there are.

Yes, Sawkill Girls is very diverse! And it’s true, we could really use more standalones.

A little late to the party but here goes. Little, Big by John Crowley. A beautifully written novel that completely drew me in.

As much as I love fantasy series, I enjoy the occasional standalone novel! Great list! Might I also suggest The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip and Uprooted by Naomi Novik.

I’ve had Radiance on my radar for a little while! It sounds really interesting, and it’s one I might have to pick up sooner rather than later. And there are a few other books I’ve got my eye on that you included, like Circe! But also, I looooooved To Kill a Kingdom. It’s so fun, and puts such an interesting spin on a fairytale that I really enjoy! And I also really enjoyed Reign the Earth too.

@@BeautifullyBookishBethany I already own Circe so there's no reason I won't get to that one sooner rather than later... ideally ;)

I am currently reading The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton and am really enjoying it so far. It's slow-paced and very dense, but really good, and ALL of the characters are fascinating.

Yay for Fantasy standalones! I have so many series to finish that I need some standalones in my life. I just got The Raven's Tale from the library and hope to get to it really soon. As for The Hazel Wood, I loved the first half but not so much the second half. I'm not a fan of Alice in Wonderland and because the second half had that feel, that's probably why I didn't like it.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany

Wonderful! Yes, sometimes you just need something that isn’t such a commitment! I get that. Hazel wood isn’t for everyone.

Hi. I would add An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard. It's another one where it has a sequel due, but it is a satisfying and very action packed read on its own and was a 5 star for me last year. Also, A Brothers Price by Wen Spencer which I just read last week and is a very interesting and thought-provoking gender bent non-magical matriarchal fantasy world. Lastly, The Changeling by Victor LaValle which is fantasy horror which I haven't read yet but is on my TBR. TFS :)

Unkindness of Magicians is definitely on my TBR! Love all the recommendations. 💕

I absolutely love Claire Legrand's writing and "Sawkill Girls was one of my favourite books, right up until that end. No spoilers, but one of the characters should have gotten their comeuppance and blaming men for a woman's misdeeds is not feminism. Yeah, the men were douchebags, but that doesn't mean they should... gonna stop before spoilers. Still, love the woman's writing. I think my favourite standalone fantasy is "Faerie Tale" by Raymond E. Feist, but I'm a sucker for that era of writing. Thanks for the recommendations.

I love her writing too! Yeah, I think that is a fair critique. I wasn’t so bothered by it but I can see where you are coming from.

Ughhhhh.... screw feminism. Came for fantasy recommendations, not social justice baloney. Thumbs way down.
@BeautifullyBookishBethany

Well, since most of my favorite fantasy authors incorporate feminism and social justice, it sounds like I may not be the right reviewer for you!
