I'm back!!!!!!!!! This time with 11 things I really did not expect to live or encounter here in Australia.
I hope you enjoy it! if you do, don't forget to subscribe and like!
NOTE: After releasing the video I was made aware that I'm WRONG about Afternoon Tea meaning dinner... that's not the case but for some reason I thought it was.. I've been wrong for 4 years.. hahaha sorry!
Dropbears are a hoax in contemporary Australian folklore featuring a predatory, carnivorous version of the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus). This imaginary animal is commonly spoken about in tall tales designed to scare tourists. (LOL)

Afternoon tea isn't dinner. Afternoon tea is small snack and drink. Example, scones and cup of tea. "Tea" by itself can mean dinner. It comes from England...in the south of England dinner is the evening meal but in the north, dinner is the midday meal and tea is the night time meal. Australians use both dinner and tea to mean the evening meal.

kiarra bryant I thought Perth was backwards. Shops use to close at 6pm except for Thursdays where it was 9pm. Several years ago the laws were changed to shops could open until 9pm during the week. And they could open on Sundays for 6 hours. I thought Melbourne would have these laws already

Afternoon tea is.... afternoon tea. Tea or coffee & maybe a piece of cake or a couple of biscuits, in the afternoon. Around 3:00pm. Tea is dinner, the evening meal. The bars are IN the hotels. It's the long thing the bartender stands behind. Tipping... As a customer it's not my job to pay the staff.

Hola Mai, nice to see you back on RU-vid, great video! I wanted to point out that "tea" as an alternate to the word dinner comes from high tea and not afternoon tea, high meaning advanced/late - a meal after 5 or 6pm. Although it's all mixed up these days because people and places have starting replacing the name afternoon tea (with scones and cakes etc) with high tea - I think they think "high" makes it sound fancier or more special than the ordinary after school afternoon tea we grew up with. Looking forward to your next video!

Mai, afternoon tea is like' onces' but in the afternoon. Some Australians do use 'tea' and 'dinner' interchangeably. You know what's confusing to me? supper! like what is it? my Aussie husband says it's something you take after your dinner... but growing up in Colombia, learning North-American English, I thought that supper meant dinner. Not here it doesn't (apparently). It's all very interesting :-)

Hello:) when someone uses the expression "fair dinkum" they are either asking if what you are saying is the truth, or telling the person that it is the truth. So if you were to tell me something that I am not quite sure is true, I might ask, "Fair dinkum?" Or if I was telling you a story I might add , "It's fair dinkum" which is letting you know that what I am saying is the truth. I hope that made sense:)

Drop Bears ......funny! BUT, if you ever try to get at a Huntsman spider with a broom (Huntsmans, are the ones often called tarantulas), they drop to the ground so quick , it scares the shit out of you. And i am supposed to be the tough, protecting bloke around the house.

thank God I haven't had one of those encounters... I wouldn't know what to do? put a bucket over it and trap it? what would you do?
@PHILMROSE
@PHILMROSE 6 лет назад
Just keep using your broom. Sure, the spider will start climbing up the handle to see what is going on, but you just grab the other end and trick him. Then take the broom outside, and chuck it on the ground. Come back in 10 minutes, kick the broom a bit, and see if anything moves. OR......you get the vacuum cleaner and suck him right up into dust world

Tobacco tax: This worked with you in stopping your smoking. That's a major part of the heavy tax, discouraging smoking. Hard rubbish: Not a way to get cheap furniture but to get rid of unwanted pieces. The truck that collects them is operated through the local council. Shopping hours: In suburban Sydney, small shops such as butchers, will close around 5.30. Supermarkets are normally open until at least 8 and those operated by the major chains stay open until 10 or 11. Afternoon tea is not dinner. It's a cup of tea or coffee, sometimes a piece of cake or a biscuit. Dinner is called either dinner or tea, without the afternoon. Magpies are only a danger for a few weeks in spring - the magpie is protecting its chicks. Even then, wear a hat, which you should be doing outdoors in any event. A small penalty for the beautiful song.
@DaughterofmyMum
@DaughterofmyMum 5 лет назад
Hi DoubleDee.. thank you soo much for your comment. You are right in every point. I'm glad the tobacco tax worked for me. Someone said that it is ilegal to take things from hard rubbish piles.. is that true?. Woolies and coles do close late.. but I hate that the majority of the shopping malls close so early.. that's so different from Colombia. I was very confused about afternoon tea vs tea.. I now know the difference!

Afternoon Tea is the PC term for 'Smoko', a break given for a cigarette break at work, usually mid afternoon (between lunch/midday meal and knock off/end of work). There is a smoko break between start of work and lunch, called 'mornos'/morning tea. Both breaks are usually 10 minutes each. Often they are combined to be a 20 minuet morning tea smoko and the arvo one is foregone

So, no one told you about hoop snakes ? They're a dead set bastard in the bush. You'll see them and if your on a hill, where they prefer to nest...you'll run down hill to get some speed up. Well, the hoop snake forms a circle then flicks himself up like a hula-hoop and rolls down after you faster than you can run...sneaky bastards, a bit like dropbears...fairdinkum !

why is it that when people visit our country they automatically think that the things that they have experienced where they are that they think that means all of Australia is the same??? for fucks sake each state in Australia does things differently so just cause you might visit Sydney that does not mean that every state here is the same ....look at America every state there has different rules too just like we Aussie's do!! well in the country we have magpies but we also have a bird called the plover that you wont find in the city areas that will swoop and chase you so we have 2 swooping birds to watch out for!!! I moved to the country from the city and was terrified when I first encountered this bird as I had never seen one before!!

Homelessness is generally a big-city problem. Any city with more than a million people is probably going to have some homeless. In small communities, everybody knows everybody, so if somebody needs a place to stay or even just wants a different place to stay so they can get away from family, they generally know somebody they can stay with. The larger the city, the higher percentage of people you have who don't feel like they know anybody well enough to even talk about their domestic issues, much less stay in their house. There are also cultural and even legal factors that contribute in some areas, but community size is relevant to homelessness in just about any country. The phrase "fair enough" is widely used throughout the English-speaking world. "Thongs" used to mean flip-flops in America and still does in some older-generation circles. (In America, this usage declined after the introduction of thong bikinis in the eighties and declined further after the introduction of thong underwear in the nineties; but it used to be quite common.) "I reckon" is quite common in the American South. Drop bears actually make great pets, if you have the hard lump of bone in their posterior surgically removed. They only need it to stun prey, so if you're going to feed them as pets, it's unnecessary. It's sort of like having a cat declawed or a skunk descented. HTH.HAND.

Tipping is not required as workers are already paid well but expect to be paid the same as the bosses so think they’re entitled to even more. Its those wages that make extended trading impractical.
@DaughterofmyMum
@DaughterofmyMum 6 лет назад
Hi Kelly, thank you so much for your comment. What do you mean by extended trading?
@roustus66
@roustus66 6 лет назад
Extended trading means opening after normal trading hours (9-5) when normally overtime rates need to be paid, although with so many casual workers these days I don't know if the same overtime rules apply to casual employees.

There are a lot of inaccuracies in this video... because in most parts of Australia we DO tip waiting staff, but it is not something we do because we have to, it is because the service impressed us. Drop bears are not real. Hard rubbish "days" don't exist in Melbourne any more as the local councils found it more efficient to have residents ASK for a hard rubbish pick up. Rummaging through a hard rubbish stack is strictly speaking illegal. That said, not bad as a starting point video.
