Your spot on mate!

Great tips. All true in Australia. Re the drinks at the party: it’s more a gift to thank the host for the invitation than something you’ll drink or eat there. We have parties called “bring a plate” where you all bring food or drink to share. Sometimes you’ll agree beforehand who’ll bring what.

Thanks for your comment and the info! I'm still adjusting! hahaha

I use this video in my English as a Second Language class in Sydney. When we learn words and phrases like “it’s polite to” or “it’s not acceptable To” we watch your video and make sentences based on what you say. The students love someone like you. They can relate to you more than they can to a native telling them the same things.

As someone that used to be in the service industry (you'd spot a foreign tourist miles off); I'd often whisper to them "no need to tip mate", but it was always nice, especially by the yankie tourists that didn't think they had to come to the bar like everybody else and just sat at a table and looked around expecting service to magically appear. You're a sweetheart, liking your vids. Hope you're still here, just randomly clicking your vids as they turn up... might have to subscribe!

The two most crucial bits of information for visitors are well explained here: treat everyone equally and respect a queue.

Umm, tipping is not controversial at all. No-one tips, no-one needs to tip. The only 1 place you may see it is in fancy restaurants. That's it.

Don't quote me on it, but Im led to believe it's due to how wages are done in different places. In the U.S. for example an hourly wage can be peanuts and service staff more or less rely on tips to make a living whereas here in Aus. service staff get a proper wage.

Not quite, I tip occasionally for exceptional service.

As an Australian I do not tip at food places, but when I go to a hotel or motel or such, I buy 2 box of good quality chocolates. The first one I give to the housekeeping staff at the hotel should I stay there to thank them for their efforts in making the room tidy. The 2nd box of chocolates I give to the front of house staff or the hotel receptionist. As a kind thank you for letting me stay at their hotel.

You got it! Great insight to local customs. Especially tipping. As an Oz native, I do tip (in fact, when OS, I over-tip). But I know I don't have any obligation here in Oz, so I don't need to apply any formula here. If service is really substandard or just minimum standard or rude, I won't tip. But otherwise, I'll at least 'round up', and if I enjoyed my experience, I'll tip. That's just my personal thing, of course - no obligation. Punctuality. Yes! Important! You won't get the job (or the contract) if you make people wait for you, whatever the excuse.

Mai's Journey Women hop on and off first on busses and especially elevators. It isn’t always possible but men should wait for women to hop out of a lift (elevator) before they get off.

The 'shout'. If someone shouts you a beer you should shout them back. 2-3 people is easy to keep track of, 4-5 can get complicated if you started at different times. Then you get some bastards who try to skip their shout, these are social pariahs.

It is embarrassing to us working in the industry. I think it’s because we don’t like people knowing that we might be struggling,

I don't think we tip because of that... when I tip is because the service was extraordinary!
