Love the video! My husband wanted a puffy recliner for the living room. He went on and on about this recliner he had in the 90’s and how much he loved it and wanted to find the exact same one. I was mortified but quickly realized he gives me COMPLETELY free reign to decorate the entirety of the house. He loves my choices, compliments them with a smile so the man got his ugly, puffy, yet comfy, recliner. I purchased the exact recliner he wanted but had it made in a fabulous, neutral, fabric. I throw the most chic blanket and pillow on it. It hides it well enough and my wonderful husband gets to enjoy his chair. 😊

Now that's how to do it! I did the same, my husband is fine with me decorating the entire house my way. All he wanted was a recliner that fit his nearly 7' frame. We bought him the The Beast. It's hideous but makes him so happy. The monster chair has become a bit of a conversation piece and pic opportunity. My smaller women friends love to sit in it and laugh.

I had to laugh about the leather recliners- I am a single woman and I chose to buy my double seat recliner leather love seat with the cup holders in between the two chairs 😆 and I love it. It’s in my media/tv room which was a converted garage. I don’t care if it makes my room look old- it’s comfortable and fits my needs/wants. Unfortunately the ceiling has the popcorn paint and fan with light and those are things I do want to get rid of. I am looking to get a ceiling fan with just 3 blades and no light and find someone to remove the popcorn effect. So, I do want a touch of modern worked in with my recliner sofa. Love your content and your laugh is infectious.

I’m not sure what the issue with blinds is. When you don’t need privacy you can pull them all the way up and they disappear.

Isn't there quite an issue with the upkeep on curtains? I was recently considering roman shades; but there's the same issue with keeping them clean (and I have cats and one cat sheds like nothing I have seen before -- he's a professional shedder and his hair is embedded in everything).
@Justaregularoldplumbus
@Justaregularoldplumbus Год назад
I just vacuum my curtains when I vacuum my floors. I only have 3 windows in my apartment so it takes like 5 minutes lol. We can’t get rid of our ugly blinds so we keep them tucked up and hidden behind the lovely curtains (sheers + regular). Roman shades are also pretty, I assume you’d wipe them if they’re wood? Idk how you’d clean them if they’re fabric, maybe vacuum? Wash? Edit: I think the problem with blinds is most people actually use them and even keep them visible (just opened) when not in use. They’re also unnecessary if you can get curtains instead (or shades, or even prettier wooden blinds).

I can not take my black out curtains down in my living room. My husband works 3rd shift and can only sleep in his recliner. We are empty nesters so no kids but the curtains can be pulled back. He likes them that way when he is awake. We live in a community and close to the train tracks. Our house is well insulated and with the curtains he doesn’t hear the train. I’m in the back of the house and I never hear the train. We live in West Tennessee and you know it gets hot down here. We have a canopy of trees and a well tuned A/C heating unit. The black out linings keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Our all inclusive utility bill never gets over $230 for a 3 bedroom house.
@mmr1646
@mmr1646 Год назад
We live in the Westetn Colorado desert so it is very impractical not to have ceiling fans in certain rooms. Instead, I am changing over my ugly ceiling fans with wood and giant lights to very sleek, white fans with small wall hugging lights (because my husband loves top lighting) and this helps to deminish the impact on the room. They are not very noticeable when they are the same color as the rest of the ceiling. I think that sometimes a ceiling fan is needed to move air and cool the room, so totally get rid of them isn’t always practical. That said, we are going to replace the fan in our vaulted foyer with a chandelier because that fan really serves no purpose.

An unusual tip for the Frame TV… I put one in my bedroom but not in my den (yet). It keeps my bedroom feeling calm and luxe and I didn’t have to put any kind of media furniture to accommodate it. Since most people expect to see TVs in a den, it’s easier to work it into a cohesive look. I’ll eventually put one in my den too, but I think it was more bang for my buck in my bedroom.

We have a leather sofa with rounded arms and matching chair in a beautiful, rich brown color with a hint of red -- matches the mahogany inlays in the entertainment cabinet perfectly. LOL. I adore your videos even though we have a very different style as decorators. I just want to point out that proper drapes have a function that may get more critical as the reorganization of covid and other global politics continues. We have seen a huge jump in fuel prices and drapes really do help control home comfort when used properly. Who is teaching kids how to draw them on the south side in the mornings in the winter and close them when the windows are no longer capturing heat? Good quality drapes can and should be laundered and UV rays controlled where needed. I think they will be rolling back into style in no time …

The issue I feel is not antiques or curtains that makes a room feel old ,but poor quality furniture ( avoid IKEA at all cost!) , clutter , over accessorizing, and the most important neglecting your interior. Invest in quality pieces if you can they will always look good whatever the latest trend.

Agreed! I can spot a cheap 2013 ikea Pinterest remodel from a mile away, so much more dated and sad than nice antiques. Although I agree w Valentina that it’s not my preference to have a themed house with ALL old furniture from the same era, it’s better to mix and match old pieces w character with updated more minimal pieces. My mom is a retired interior designer and her house is lovely with quality pieces but it’s all early 2000’s Tuscan style!! I’ve been goading her to mix in some different styles (French country, warm neutral minimal, etc), replace some of the Pottery Barn style matching sets with more actual vintage pieces, and to minimize her clutter. It looks a lot fresher now than before I started doing that.

Went from my energetic, minimalist downtown apartment with my clean lines/metal/glass/leather theme to her suburb and had to get used to the Live Laugh Love thing with the poofy big box store brown recliner couches and massive flat screen TV that sucked all the space out of the room. And I just realized our decorating styles mirrored our personalities. And our personalities made us break up!

I've changed out the blankets, and pillows in my living room and even added larger items you have suggested while removed the knick knack things....but we still have those orange looking oak floors. Any suggestions for a rug or paint color if I have chocolate brown couches that would minimize the orange tone? I'm also stealing the blanket over the arm trick. Thanks again for all of the tips and links to great updates!

A tip the paint guy suggested was to subtly put the color you want to minimize into the room. Use a pillow with pops of that color, vase, art etc.

@@despinakyraleos2234 If I were planning a remodel of an area where I’m demo’ing the whole space, sure I’d redo them, but I’m not going to do them just to redo them. I removed them in my garage because the weather fluctuations caused them to flake, but it was pricey. The whole house would be thousands and thousands of dollars. And they take a lot of time and effort to remove on your own.

@@bugsbunny2357 Gosh, it was 3 or 4 years ago. It was a 3 car garage and I want to say it was $1500 in the Portland Metro area. So the whole house (4533sqft) would have been about 8-10k? That didn’t include painting it, just removing the ceiling texture.
@bugsbunny2357
@bugsbunny2357 Год назад
@@vanessabogaert2104 Thanks for the info Vanessa as I had no idea and I am thinking of downsizing. So, it's good to know. 4,533 is a humongous house so it probably would have cost 10k for sure. I imagine it's a lot of work and clean up and protecting stuff, etc. Apparently you just spray water on it and scrape it off. But, it sounds about as fun as removing wallpaper.

I only watched half of this,as I don't agree that things make your house look old.I think you should have around you what YOU love and makes you and your family happy.Sure I get that if you want to update your interior look, some of these suggestions are relevant.But to my mind, often this just leads to boring white and grey ,cold looking rooms.Which I might add, is the impression that the living room in this video is giving me! I like wood, warm colours and a cosy feel.

Here's what makes my living room look old. Brick fireplace from the 70s. Orange, pink, red bricks. So, convince us it's okay to paint the brick. I keep saying "it's only a brick"; then someone says "oh you can't paint the brick. You'll ruin the look. You can't undo it". what look? why would I undo it? It's not like they were discovered in a historic dig - they were designed and colored to be in a 70s house. I took a piece of chalk and started coloring each brick to convince myself it's okay. I hate those old bricks. Convince me painting them is the right way to go. YOU always make it be right!!

You can "stain" the brick (which is more reversible than painting because you could then later still paint the brick).

The ceiling fans you showed are truly ugly 😱 but they do make modern ones with an LED light (for when you need the overhead lighting) that look very decent. I hate cranking up the A/C in the summer so I rely on fans in the main rooms to keep the space cool/breezy and my electricity bill in check. 👍

I'm really shocked about what you said about my 2" wood blinds. I use them to block the sun otherwise my Air Conditioning bills would be astronomical.
