One unique event in f1 that I think should have been mentioned was the 1954 British grand prix - then, as now, there was an extra point on offer for fastest lap- but with mechanical stopwatches, laps were only measured to the nearest whole second. At this race, 7 drivers set a 1:50, meaning 7 drivers each got 1/7 of a point. This also meant that Mike Hawthorn finished the season with 24 and 9/14 points

When Max started he beat the youngest ever driver record by almost 2 years, not almost 1 year, according to your list the youngest ever driver at that point was Jaime Alguersuari at 19 years and 125 days compared to Max's 17 years and 166 days. @@KozKalanndok yep, it was 7 even. The race that has (and realistically, will forever have) the current record for least classified finishers is the 1966 Monaco GP which saw just 4 cars make it 90% towards the then still 100 laps of Monaco. Really it makes sense considering that Monaco was 100 laps back then and that this was the first year that had the 90% rule, otherwise this race would've had 6 finishers, in which case I think the record would go to the 20 lap shorter '68 Monaco GP with 5 finishers no matter how you count it (the 6th place person went out on lap 16).

The race in question was one on the Hockenheimring in 1977 (IIRC), and said driver hadn't qualified to race. He still went out onto the track after the grid starters had passed the pit exit, as normal in a regular pit start, and unbelievably not a single steward noticed the bright yellow car he was driving until about lap five or so when he retired due to an engine failure. I think Verstappen being so successful is why they instituted the rule... other teams may see this and try to fast-track younger drivers with talent in the hopes of achieving the same thing. Also to possibly prevent people who have no legal control over their lives from being pressured by parents or legal guardians into signing contracts they have no say over.
@dinglepringle1380
@dinglepringle1380 2 года назад
As for the second half of this comment, you’ve gotta remember that F1 drivers start a career in racing when they’re 4/5/6 years old. By the time they’re 13, they’re professional and have contracts to sign that they have no say over.
@adam346
@adam346 2 года назад
@@dinglepringle1380 I am unaware of how much junior drivers or f2/3 drivers make in comparison to F1 but I imagine the figures go from 6 to 7-8. Having a parent signing a contract on your behalf where they get the majority of a 7 figure contract is... well, suspect.
@adam346
@adam346 Год назад
@Trikk not implying that. I am implying that someone who cannot make legal decisions on their own behalf or enter into a contract on their own behalf have people that may be making decisions that may not be in their best interest. Money is a massive motivator, especially if the parents have sacrificed a lot to get their kid this far... so if, for instance, another Max Verstappen type were to rise through the ranks and get in at 17 again... and then die on track... or just get severely injured... it raises the prospect of legal responsibility of letting a minor take part in a known deadly sport. This way, there are no questions.

Actually is to promote F2/F3 championships, Max didnt need those to prove himself, if that becomes a trend, FIA would lose lot of money, so these rules along licence points, make those categories now mandatory
@adam346
@adam346 Год назад
@@RoyMatzem I think they only made being 18 and in the prior categories for two years the mandatory aspect... the license points can be earned by driving in any number of categories and placing well in them... so it is not locking in F2/3. F2 though, does have the most license points at 40 for the top three so it would be the "easiest" to get your license in but not exclusive to it. You can jump from F3 to F1 if you place 2nd two years in a row and ditto with Formula E, Formula Euro and if you place first twice in LMP 2 (World Endurance) two years in a row. If anything, it encourages mixing and matching and encouraging high-placing racers to push ahead. I can see why you would think that with the most points being given by F2 though.

0:40 explain to me how it's possible for Max to break a record that was PREVIOUSLY held by Lance Stroll for the youngest driver to race in F1 if Max started in 2015 and Lance started in 2017.... that record was never Lance's LOL. If anyting the previous record-holder from the looks of that chart would have been Jamie Alguersuari from 2009

@@MrReese that's correct, a list of the youngest driver ages at the start of their career so far and some on that list were record holders but not all and definitely not stroll but Ed said that Max broke the record that was held by Stroll when Max started which doesn't make sense because time travel has not yet been invented lol. The "F1 Races Every Driver Finished" is a much shorter list than I would have expected, although I suppose extreme levels of reliability has only been prevalent in the past decade or so. Also I didn't believe the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix was on there until I realized Jules Bianchi's crash was 2014 and he didn't actually sadly succumb to his injuries until 2015. Regardless, another fine example of deep diving into F1 historical stats from Edd Straw as always. Really enjoy his work keep it up!

9:15 Lewis went to the final round with a 17point lead. Normaly this means he only needs to finish in the top 6 if Rosberg wins With the double points this means he has to finish 2nd if Rosberg wins. 2014 Mercedes it lookes easy. In the race Rosberg had an engine problem, when driving in P2. But imagine if Lewis had the problem, and finished 6th. Losing the title

Of course, we cannot mention weird moments from F1 history without mentioning the 3 way tie for pole position in Jerez 1997. The top three drivers on the grid, Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Heinz Harold Frentzen, all set exactly the same time to three decimal places, with the official time difference showing "+0.000". The order was decided by whichever driver set the time first, which was Villeneuve. Just as remarkable, but overshadowed by the 3 way tie for pole, was the driver closest to that time. At the time, it wouldn't have been too surprising if it was one of the two McLarens of Mika Hakkinen or David Coulthard, possibly one of the young Jordan drivers of Ralf Schumacher or Giancarlo Fisichella, but no. The next closest driver to the rime set by the top 3 was set by Arrows driver, and outgoing world champion, Damon Hill. Martin Brundle put it best: "Who would have expected, after the winter testing here [Jerez] when Damon was 4 or 5 seconds off the pace, that he would be just 1 tenth [of a second] off a pole position?"

About spa 2022, a technicality. Yes it was decided by one lap (in essence). However it’s not fair to the drivers it was only decided after the saftycar. Yes I am aware that’s not how it was said, but not mentioning the tricky qualification runs is a injustice to their efforts. I mean the worst car made it to P2 in that dreadful rainy qualifying

The next races will show. If Ferrari and red bull have to raise their ride height they will be slower. If they don’t and we see them bouncing then we know they have changed based on the directive too. If they were doing nothing wrong those two teams would not be complaining as they have. It does explain a lot and I appreciate this video being made.

He actually did not serve that penalty as he had crossed the line before he arrived at his pit position. Currently drivers are not allowed to enter the pits on the last lap in Silverstone (but that's a track specific rule in Silverstone only as you're faster at the Line through the pits in comparison to driving the track)
