11-Year-Old's Passion Vs Grades: Do Parents Really Know Best? 

Sorry. But I'm on the dad's side. We live in a society that is advancing in tech a lot. Grades matter when they do matter. But taking him away from his passion will make him become more of a failure in the future.

I’m sorry, but the mum is just wrong here She is killing his love for learning by stressing him out, then saying he’s not working hard enough? His entire day is literally filled with tutions.

"Other kids are studying hard every day" the mother who literally has a child that can program, code, 3d modeler, swimmer, artist, can play the piano.

Imagine how her mom would feel if the kid would start comparing her from other moms

"just compare him to the other kids" And this is where everything is wrong.

“Ruining his future” says the person ruining his childhood.

If your kid is depressed and starts to be disrespectful and hates you, then you're doing something wrong.

After watching all of this, I am so glad that I'm blessed by having a very understanding parents. I once failed on paper in which I put so much effort on. I burn the midnight owl every single day to study on my weakest subject, that is additional mathematics, but still I failed. My parents still comfort me and said they believe that I already try my best. They even said they're so proud of me. Because of their support, finally I got an A for the subject

If this boy did 3D-Modeling and Coding when he was 8, what did his classmates do, set up Apple and Amazon? This mom has no right to compare him with those “other kids”.

I feel so bad for this kid. He should be able to pursue what he likes. He even said he hated his mom out loud. I'm pretty sure no normal person would keep pressuring him at that point.

Being honest, the mom is just neglecting him- Like I mean, it's HIS life, let his do his passion. You cannot decide what your son does in life.

This is how anxiety and depression develop as a teenager. As a child, we are taught to be creative and imaginative but then our passions are cut up perfectly by the rigidity of school.

He's done more in 8 years than i'm gonna do in a lifetime. Parents really can't understand what grades actually mean compared to the amazing career opportunities that kid has. He has a bright future, but his parents throw a blind eye and overshadow all of it.

I hope he doesn't grow up hating everything. His mother is so fixated on her child's future she neglects her son is a literal child and should be able to enjoy his present life. If everything he does is for his future, he's gonna be disappointed when he reaches that future

His dad is raising him perfectly. He wants him to follow his passion but he also cares about getting at least decent grades to stay in line.

That's a great dad ngl, always supports his son's passions rather than forcing their child to do something they refuse/never wanted to do, it would just make them a bad person rather than doing something beneficial for the society.

Her Mother's approach- *Full from marks, Empty from life.* Her Father's approach- *Half filled from marks, full of life, full from success in work* Anything above 95 is amazing or very good, above 90 is good, less than 90 above 80 is average or just on edge and less than 80 is just unacceptable for parents in Asian countries

His mother is pressuring him too much, yes grades are important but at least give him some times to rest.

I understand how he feels, and i'm pretty sure everyone else does too. I'd rather him focus on what he would want to learn and what he's interested in rather than forcing him to study about things he does not want to remember/learn.

The Dad: i want you to push your dreams as much as you want. The Mom: Lemme give you Depression, Anxiety, and Trust Issue for the rest of your life.

It’s quite obvious his mom doesn’t treat him like a son but an investment, she makes sure he has good grades so she can live an easy life herself when the boy grows up and gets a good job.

I really think his mom did everything with best intentions in mind but REALLY poor execution of said intentions

his mum really reminds me of mine. when i was young, everything was just about grades and marks and exam results, and even as i am going into year 12 next year, it still remains the same. i was compared to my classmates and people who had already established their own careers. from all the pressure, i developed some serious mental health issues . i had already been diagnosed with autism, adhd and ocd from a young age and the pressure that my mum put on me just made everything more severe. in the end, i just gave up. grades went from a's to c's and i couldnt bring myself to care anymore because i was so burnt out. this kid truly has a lot of talent and i think its rare for someone to develop a hobby as unique as his at his age. i hope him mum realizes that kids need to have their own hobbies and own interests in order to entertain themselves and just really escape from schoolwork. my heart goes out to him,, kids shouldnt be borderline passing out, they should be enjoying their childhood

Mad respect to the dad. He seems like he actually cares for his son's uniqueness and passions, rather than try to mold him into the prototype straight A student that is a vanilla blueprint.

Hes only 11. Let him play and enjoy his childhood. Hes naturally gifted smart kid. Not need to burden him with all these extra classes. He will be fine without all of that.

The father is right... teaching a fish to climb a tree is only going to get him to a certain level. The fish should swim and excell at swimming.

I remember what my mom always told me before "Your grades in elementary and high school don't matter, they will look good on paper, but once your in college everything you learn will be useless. Do what you want as a kid but when your in college give them your A game." Never really understood this until I got older but I'm happy my mother saw it like this. I feel sorry for this kid though cause his mom is forcing him to do what he hates.

i hope this kid will live a healthy and happy life in the future. he doesnt deserve all of this pressure so early on in life

I feel extremely bad for this child. I complain about how much work I have to handle with school and the 4-hour practices I have every day, but I'm about to be a senior in high school. This kid isn't even a teenager yet and has like 3 times the stress I have.

It's such a pain that sometimes we are so forced to take our school seriously that we lose all interest in passion and life.

My both parents: We expect 90% and up. My brain: I already get 85%. Also my brain: I want to write a story. My parents: Study study study study. Main focus is study. my brain: This is so much pressure. *Starts crying small tears.* Oh shoot mom is coming. *Quickly stops crying.*

"Grades are your future, they are important to your future." Sure, you take this genius and put him into a box, suck the passion out of him, make him distrust his family, take away a competitive advantage for him in robotics, all for what? A number on a paper? What's the point of getting a high score for your future if your future is going to be miserable? Isn't his health more important for the future anyway? EDIT: This comment section is the written equivalent of a verbal beatdown. We get it, grades don't matter except for when they do. Please remain civil. Thanks, and keep up the good fight as we prove that grades are really worth nothing! 2ND EDIT: I stopped reading these a long time ago, but recently, somebody brought up a point that I rather agree with. Not to mention, enough time has passed and I've experienced enough to safely conclude that grades aren't meaningless. Nonetheless, they are not the be-all-end-all, for a fully intelligent person is still only half a person should they be deprived of any emotional capacity, health or passion to use said intellect. That's why I don't really agree with the comment about "high school is just there for you to pass" - key example being, say, art class, where reflections are what actually gather marks because it's high school. But nobody goes to art class to write artist statements, they go there to learn how to draw, as near-inconsequential to the mark as it may be. (I should know, I became a TA to a high school art teacher.) Again, reminder to keep it civil, geez.
