A: No, the carriage doesn't slide back due to strict weight laws in California. The sliding carriage will make the truck to heavy in CA

A: Currently more than 30
Q: Why must the driveshaft be removed to tow a vehicle?
A: When vehicles are not running the transmission is not receiving circulating lubricant. If the driveshaft is left installed, the transmission, which is not receiving lubricant, is still spinning. This allows it to get very hot which eventually will cause major damage to the transmission. Therefore, removing the driveshaft completely eliminates the transmission from spinning. Simply leaving it in neutral is not sufficient since the transmission still spins in neutral.

they had taught me to slide the 5th wheel forward instead of putting a 4x4 block to hold up the goose neck, in case the block falls out then you need to lift the gooseneck up to rehook to the trailer. i went in one of our cranes to pick up the gooseneck a couple of times because drivers used a block and the neck fell down. and also remember to clean the path of where the gooseneck sits when you rehook in case you drop dirt and rocks, then you wont be able to rehook the gooseneck plates. just something that i remebered from years ago, cuz i forgot once to clean and couldnt hook up and had to start over to get it to connect. good job nice vid, thanks.

Drive motors always to the back, binders on track and lower, hook chain back to itself so you have 4 point contact instead of 2 and if you do brake down, put the ex on trunion pad to pick trailer up, especially in dirt.

Love the content. Just a recommendation, I'm betting you were a bit heavy on your drives, if you put the machine on in reverse instead of forwards, the drive gears are closer to your trailer axles and can shift the weight off your drives to the trailer axles. Helps scale it out on my east coast set up. I'm given 20k 40k 54k. Tandem axle truck with a Tri axle lowboy. Hope it helps. Be safe driver.

Great job by both of you. When unloading an excavator, Always keep the boom out and the bucket as close to the ground as possible. If it teeters, you can catch yourself. If it is too high you can tip over. When loading its the same, boom out and off to the side and bucket close to the ground. I have seen them tip over and I have seen them slide off the sides. We had rails down the middle of the trailers to prevent sliding on wet trailers. Slow baby steps always. Be careful and stay safe. Note: The center rails are removable for other uses with the trailers. Our trailers are higher than lowboys.

Nice video--that new lo-boy trailer and truck will take some getting used to. You have now moved into a whole 'nuther ball game moving equipemnt. More time consuming and way more expensive-but you'll will leaarn. Being on un-even grades when loading/unloading and wet weather (trailer slick) are going to take some getting used to. As a old time trucker, we call those trl's RGN's removable goose necks. When ever possible, you should always cross chain, better to have it pulling to the middle of the trl than to the outside. Also hate those rear axles, better to have a three axle, changing the inside tires are a bear. One more thing, with that big trl, why did you not get a twenty thousand lb front axle?

I agree with using cross chains. Additionally, I've never been comfortable with chaining to treads. If you have an accident it would seem like they could break a segment and tear off. Finally, what are your chains/binders rated at? Only 4 for 77k lbs would mean that they'd have to be at least 20k lbs. Personally, even if the chains/binders were 20k lbs, I'd do cross chains on the chassis eyelets as well as cross chains on the treads or better yet to eyelets on the tread carriers if available.

I have been out for 15 years and don't remember the tare on the binders, we used the lever or arm binders. On the bigger equipment, we would use double chains. Been nice if all the mfgs would put tie down points on all of the equipment. But that was the old days, We would haul the Manitowoc cralns and a lot of other major equipment. We did use a lot of chains on the big and heavy machinery. Enjoyed hauling the big stuff. A lot of looks and pictures taken, police escorts, etc. Good ole days, Now I sit and watch utube videos of all the younger and older drivers still doing it. Enjoy watching your videos. Just keep them coming so the old timers can reminisce about doing it. Have fun and keep enjoying doing it. I know Dad is proud of you.

Remember only 1/2 the weight of the machine is required in WLL(working load limit) of chains. Therefore the 75,000 lb machine requires 37,500 lbs in chain/binder WLL. Being there was 5 chains on the unit the each chain/binder would be minimally rated at 7,500 lbs. These particular chains and binders have a WLL of 11,300 lbs so this load was properly secured. As for cross chaining we simply don’t believe in it. If one side goes loose the other as potential to go loose as well and it’s just a mess of chain and binder. Chaining to the track is not only accepted by DOT here but is actually the universally preferred method here. If the track can withstand the forces of the machine and all the weight of it, it can certainly be chained from it. Thanks for watching!

@@plazatowing I guess I'm just overly conservative on my tie-down technique. I hauled pipeline inspection tools for a year with a T880 and a 48ft flatbed. I rarely grossed out over 50k lbs. I refused to load my trailer the way the client wanted it loaded because their method of tie-down was very poor in my opinion, and I'm an engineer that was taking time off from work to drive a truck. The way they were chaining the pipeline inspection tool carrier to the trailer depended on friction between the dunnage and the deck. If the trailer were to start to turn over the chains would instantly have a lot of slack which could result in the tool and carrier leaving the trailer. During COVID I ended up hauling a heat exchanger that was 10'8" W X 30' L X 4' H and weighed 30k lbs from Texas to California. I used every strap I had plus cross chained the dunnage supports (which were bolted to the face of the heat exchanger) to the front and rear of the trailer. I had forgotten about using WLL. So I agree that the four chains holding the machine to the trailer would have been sufficient. In regard to the fifth chain, in my opinion that chain was mainly there to keep the boom from swinging. If the machine had started to slip off the deck, that fifth chain would have done little to hold the machine onto the trailer. If DOT is good with chaining to the treads then I guess that's good enough. I really enjoy watching your videos. Every time I watch one I pause it after you've given the analysis of the target. I then plot out how I would handle the recovery and then watch the rest of the video to see if I got it right. Keep up the good work.

@@mirufe1 you are right, the fifth chain was only holding the boom. It's ALWAYS recommended to tie the boom down, besides it's the law in many states. I've hauled excavators & other equipment across the country, always been told DOT required the boom be tied down to prevent it from moving. As far as cross chaining, it's really a matter of preference. Some believe in it, some do not. I've done both ways, never had an issue either way. I don't feel comfortable with hooking only to the tracks though, that's an accident waiting to happen! I can see where they wasn't going very far, it was probably ok, but long haul, I would definitely chain to the machine as well as the tracks.

You could do with some lessons on chaining down loads, never just use tracks they aren't strong enough, always cross chain to the chassis as it makes a much more stable load. Hydraulic RGNs are a lot easier to use than manual ones

WoW I can not believe they allow you to hook to the track tread plate out their.. lol you don't want to try that in Michigan ;-) That would get me a healthy DOT fine up here.. We are only allowed to hook to the solid main frames.. That is just wild to be able to bind it that way.. I never dealt with a manual break away all ours are hydraulic.. But time wise?? Looks like about same amount of time to unhook and rehook..

It’s an interesting concept and the mechanical break is lighter than hydraulic rgn. Most west coast guys don’t even break down and just ride these units over the back. As for track chaining DOT here has no issues with it and I have spoken to many equipment haulers here who haul much bigger things and they all use the track. It amazes me people think it “isn’t strong enough”. Thanks for watching!

@@plazatowing well when you really stop and think about it, the tread plate is held to the track with(" four ")grade 9 half inch bolts.. an four bolts combined exceeds the tensile strength of a chain.. but it is amazing how States vary.. but yes you are totally correct we figure a thousand pounds for the lift cylinder, valve , oil reservoir , pony motor and pump.. now on our newer ones that hook to the tractor hydraulics? We estimate about 350 pounds.. but seriously I have hooked and unhooked thousands of times ( hydraulic) and I'm telling you there is only seconds difference, from watching you guys with the manual over the hydraulic 👍 great call to save weight...

West coast recognizes trunnion groups if they are spread out as a 4 axle trailer Ca tx Az nv nm ut all do so 60k on trailer axles 46750 on drives 20k on front with a trailer that weights half of an east coast flipper Cozad Murray rackley are amazing trailers there are still some from the 70’s working daily a lot from the 80’s and 90’s still selling for crazy money too 50-70k for early to mid 90’s 180k new for 16 tire Murray or rackley these days

Lmao your trucks are not stronger and you have a very small area to cover. We move 9 axle combos at 240k lbs all day pretty typical dozer move for ag work some go more, we have trailers that wouldn’t fit on your roads. You’re little cabby wouldn’t cut it here. 80k is legal load but permits allow a lot more some states allow more with out permits. Your roads might be better because you don’t have very many 😂😂😂😂😂

@@jimbro389 we have more roads per square mile then u do. Also all trucks can do 116K without permit on 5 axles. We can get permits that go up too 400.000lbs and even over that if ur company has the right permits. If a normal truck only could be 80K we could go home. We have a lot more cars then u have there. A 6 year old kid could drive in the USA without any problems on those wide roads. Ur just steering wheel holders who don't do anything hard. Every idiot can be a truckdriver in the USA. Over here some roads are just as wide as ur truck with tight turns. With those bc trucks/trailers u wouldn't even get out of a company driveway. Ur trucks are a joke and roads are kidsplay. Thats why 16 year old get licenses. Its insane kids are on the roads there, but hey its not that hard. Low traffic and wide roads, everyone can do that

So have a question. Here in Canada we regularly haul 63500kg(139700lbs) on super B trailers. 5 axle 20 tire trailers. anything larger is what is considered oversize. I use a 10 foot wide trailer 3 axle on tractor with single axle jeep weighing in at 123000 lbs. on regular basis. some how you think that weight is large. Why?

In most of the US the maximum legal weight is 80,000LB. Up here in Canada, we can have dual 53 footers loaded as our limits are higher obviously. In the US, anything over 80,000 is overweight and needs some permits and whatnot.

@@nbrowser Out of curiosity I looked up the maximum on Queensland (Australia) - which all gets very technical on axles and spacing but looks like 132 tonnes (291010 lbs) listed in "Axle Spacing/Mass Schedule for Road Trains". But then we are talking road trains up to 53m (173ft) long.

No thanks on a mechanical neck, hydraulic takes 2 minutes and you are not in & out of the truck multiple times or slamming the truck into the trailer. In bad weather or mud you are really going to love that design!
