Very cool - I didn't know that the wheels are actually sandwiched parts. Thanks a lot for showing it to us so nicely.

Like you videos I have a problem I took apart the group 2 lock thinking the combo would be on the weels I have since gotten the combo but when I put it together it won't work is there a way to tell the combo for each wheel. It is close but im off by a little

Man THANK YOU very much for explaining how the changing mechanism works, been wondering so much about that, such great engineering!

Your videos are teaching me valuable lessons, thank you. One thing, though, and its not really a 'thing' because how you address your audience doesn't make a difference to me, but......I just want to let you know that your viewers include at least one female. (Lemme check real quick.....yup. I'm female! )thanks again for the videos. You do a great job making them.

I have a safe that I saved from the landfill with a La Gard locking mechanism that looks nearly identical to what you displayed here. I have a combo that works with CW-CCW-CW (or right-left-right). Most documentation I found show a left-right-left. Is it possible there is a LRL combination that works this lock (but off by that slot width)???

I have to say that the movable flys are there for a more important reason. It is that if they were fixed, there would be some numbers that you wouldn't be able to dial depending from the previous number of the combination. For example if the first number is 20, dialing clockwise, the second couldn't be let's say 10,11...until 20 because it would move the first disk earlier. So it would dicrease the combination differs and people would think that it doesn't work properly. (Sorry for grammatical errors if they are)

Great video! I think the movable fly is needed to allow two identical consequtive numbers in the combination. Without that you cannot select select a number closer than twice the width of the fly as the next number in in the opening sequence. Unless I've misunderstood something, most safes cannot be opened with reversed rotation directions because the way the bolt moving happens.

Such an elegant solution to a complex problem. Great stuff. I'm really enjoying this series.

A great video in a great series. A quick question though; are the gates blind, can I dial clockwise or anti-clockwise for the first gate, opposite for wheel 2 then back to original direction, or does it have to be a set way?
@MichaelMaynard
@MichaelMaynard 6 лет назад
Great, and very complex, question. In short: The movable flies SHOULD make it possible to come at each number from both directions of rotation...but they sometimes don't.

HOWS COME MINE OPEN'S ON 41,.......BUT i CAN'T RESET TO A 3 NUMBER COMBINATION,.....THE KEY DON'T GO ALL THE WAY IN.

Hi Michael when are you going to be continuing the group 2 safe lever pack series?

They're on their way Glynn - these ones are really time consuming and trying to fit the videos around everything else is a challenge...but we'll get there.

Thanks for this series. Helped a lot. One question. My group 2 lock works ok with back plate off but when you put backplate back on the lever doesn’t drop. Can it be spring ? How tight should lever screw be?

Great vid. I was always wondering how the change key could be inserted, and the combs could be changed with a key in place. I figured that part of the wheels were moving, while other parts weren't , but didn't know about the decoupling of the " boss" ( centre) from the rest of the wheel, and the clutch that holds it together.

I've just bought a group 2 safe mechanism to play with and I've found this series invaluable. Thank you for your explanations.

I don't see why it is helpful for the gate to be dialed into the same position from either direction, since you will only dial each wheel into position in one direction. However, without the movable fly, there are fewer possible combinations that can be set. For example, the (unadvisable) combination of 20-20-20 would not be possible. With the movable fly, this is possible because wheel 3 will not start to move wheel 2 until a full turn has been achieved. Without the movable fly, wheel 3 would move wheel 2 before that full turn.

Do you know why this part is called "code wheel" instead of "code disk" like in disk detainer (DD) locks? I guess the answer is "because of historical reasons" but do you know those reasons?

And imagine how smart I feel when I dial my combination on the first try! Lol

Excellent explanation. I want to paint my safe and was wondering if I can remove the dial for painting without messing up the combination. From this video I can conclude that it is not a problem. As long as I get the cam back in it's original position. Can you confirm my conclusion.

Micheal, Im learning quite a bit from this series, and a lot from this episode, Im quite new to safe locks and when I took apart my wheel pack, I had no idea what the "flys" were for. I just wanted to thank you for everything I've picked up from your Tutorials, and thanks for the inspiration to get started in manipulation!
