Great seeing the whole project from start to finish.....it's very rewarding building something out of raw materials where there was nothing before! Great attempt on the first build of an axe handle! If there's a saw in camp you'd be better off to put a wood wedge in that head rather than all the nails. Cheers for the pads and handle builds...work safe!

You’ll have to make a video of you making your next handle at home. If you haven’t made it already. It’d be a cool little time lapse.

For a axe handle quarter cut/split the log into staves. Splitting the wood works best to make sure the grain runs the full length of the handle. Discard the pith, tighter the rings the better. Heartwood with the grain running front to back is stronger.

Have you ever considered getting some hand held skidding tongs for handling the cants when you build the heli pads? Sure be a lot easer to move the slabs and logs around, even some bull rope to make sling to move the cants would work. Just trying to help, good job tho.

You are one lucky man, you walked just a few feet away from the biggest Sasquatch I've ever spotted in the wild. You never saw her, don't ask me how I knew she was a she but she was smiling at you, my friend.

Wish there was an inexpensive way to send you some of my pieces of Osage Orange wood for you to make yourself some ax handles. Super tough wood.

Next time you make a handle don't you the center of the wood, it's the weakest part of the tree. Use good straight grain from outer areas.
@bj8342
@bj8342 Месяц назад
Exactly. Because of the yearly growth there are multiple short pieces of grain. If you had a very fine bladed saw and cut straight down the center of a tree, you would notice a grain pattern of inverted V's. Think of small funnels kitchen stacked on top each other and cut in half - that's what the grain pattern looks like and why it is so weak in the center.

A Hey Bjorne you boys did a nice job on the helipad. I have often wonder how you guys made them. I do have a question for you though, what do you use for the Bugs. I heard you mention them a couple times. They can be a real problem. Also good luck with that new Handel. Nice work guys, be safe out there. 😊😊

So many round nails was the problem, if there had been flat it might have lasted a little longer. It would be nice to see you make a video on making your handle.

Disappointing about the axe, but once you’re back home you’ll get it the way you want. Doing it at camp had to be primitive anyway.
