Babel's garments we've rejected and our fellowship is o'er... may we as the Church embrace that knowing we are not of the world...

Written by a Canadian man named W.E. Chute, closely based on "Sons of Sorrow", but with more complex chorus section. Full (or extended) lyrics as follows: 1. Hail the day so long expected, Hail the year of full release Zion's walls are now erected, and her watchmen publish peace. From the distant coast of Shinar, the shrill trumpet loudly roars, _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 2. Hark and hear her people crying: "see the city disappear! "Trade and traffic now are dying! Lo, we sink and perish here!" Sailors who have brought her treasures, crying from the distant shores, _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 3. All her merchants stand in wonder, "what is this that comes to pass?" Murmuring like a distant thunder, crying out "Alas! Alas!" Swell the sound ye kings and nobles, priests and peoples rich and poor! _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 4. Lo! The captives are returning, up to Zion see them fly, while the smoke from Babel's burning rolls across the darkened sky. Days of mourning now are ended, years of bondage now are o'er! _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 5. Zion's children tune your voices, and the joyful news proclaim, How the heav'nly Host rejoices, shout and echo back the same! See the ancients of the city, terrified at the uproar, _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 6. Tune your harps ye heav'nly choir, shout ye foll'wers of the Lamb! See the city all afire! Clap your hands and blow the flame! Now's the day of compensation on the Scarlet Colored Whore* _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ 7. Blow the trumpet in Mount Zion! Christ shall come a second time! Ruling with a rod of iron, all who once as foes combined! Babel's garments we've rejected, and our fellowship is o'er, _Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ _Oh! Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!_ Only verses 1, 3 and 7 are included in the Sacred Harp.

Actually, it can be traced back to a 1813 Shaker hymnal and it has been suggested that it may have been sung by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. W.E. Chute composed the tune by which it is sung today.

Dorothyellen w Thanks for the lyrics! I've listened to this about 20 times now during the past week when I first discovered this gem and you've helped me get the last lines! My ear couldn't grasp "Babel's garments." I kept saying "what have they rejected?" And thanks for filling-in what they didn't sing; it's great stuff. Nice cat by the way!

The name of the tune IS 'Babylon is Fallen and it is #117 in The Sacred Harp (1991 edition) hymnal which is available on the Resources page of this website: ru-vid.com/show-UCXlB_U7HRWu-8w5Oc6FE7ig There are regular singings that take place in most states of the US and in at least 6 other countries, which you can find listed on the Singings page of the same website. It is very rewarding to attend one of these gatherings (in my experience)! They often have loaner books for newcomers, so you don't have to buy one unless you want to. ENJOY! 😉❤🎵

@juliand6317

Sacred Harp singing is a style used here where there are 4 parts broken up into octave range and 4 kinds of sounds that are denoted by a shape. The arm pumping is an age old way to stay in time with so much happening.
