Thanks Jim for helping me find answers on how to repair rear differential. I have a Snapper Comet 30 Inch cut since 1975. Bought it new and it has been the best mower I have ever had. Had many other mowers but it is the best. When you showed how to make it commercial with the extra gears was a surprise to me. Thanks again.

Excellent video! I've always wondered how to take the rear end apart on a Snapper. You make it look so easy and explained how every part works. I think I'm going to attempt this myself instead of having someone else figure out why the rear end is locked up on my 79 model. Luckily I have two rear ends I can scavenge parts from to fix this one. Yeah $1.70 for the roller but $10.00 to have it shipped!! LOL!

My 2003 Snapper lawn tractor has a grinding noise. I just serviced it. Greases all of the fitting. Did not change the bearings because they looked good. I had to add shims because of the excessive play in the wheels. I changed the grease in the transmission & replaced the gaskets. Your video's are great thanks for your hard work.

Ricky Richardson I need you to send me some pictures of your snapper standing up if possible I need a picture of the drive disk with the snapper shifted into fifth gear. So I can see how it attaches to the bottom of your crank shaft. Then shift it into reverse and take a picture of the yoke spring where it attaches at the top and the bottom. Working on a series 3 circa 1988. I wish I could send you a photo of what my left fender bushing looks like. The hole is oblong. Don't need a gauge to see what needs to be done. There was no grease there when I took it apart, just metal shavings in the dust cap.

Greg Vanek Not really but the 11 hp Briggs that was on it leaked oil pretty bad and knocked and a gentleman answered my ad in a for sale group for a used engine and offered it to me cheap. I got it for $75 albeit it needed a starter. I've always liked the way the twins run and so I thought it a good opportunity to have one. I've installed it and it runs pretty good but I think it could use a carb rebuild. It seems to idle fast and it surges once in awhile despite me adjusting the governor and idle speed. I also had to get a longer throttle cable which I'm getting ready to put on. All in all I'm happy with it's performance. And I like to tinker. This 80s model Snapper was a Frankensnapper before I aquired it, going from a 26" deck with a 6 hp Briggs to a 33" deck with an 11 HP Briggs.....

How to stand up a snapper re110 28 inch to work on bottom of mower

Wish I had found this channel earlier. Great educational content. I have a Snapper Hi Vac 28" with the B&S 11.5 HP. , circa 2007 or so and it has been as reliable a a claw hammer. I regularly grease and lube all zerks and linkages I can find, but missed the one hub opposite the transmission side. Luckily, the bushing was still good. Not so much on the chain drive side. Wobbles a bit and has significant axial end play. Pulled the grease cover cup off wheel and the material inside looked more like tar than grease. So much for preventive maintenence. After the spindle stopped turning and thinking I just needed a belt, I found your "Buying a used Snapper" video and then started in on the rest of the video catalog. Found some play in the axle bearing on the drive side and go on to find that that bearing is no longer available. Since these things have been in production since the down of time, is there an aftermarket part or DIY solution to be found? List of parts I plan to replace is the spindle belt, friction drive, clutch assy, axle boots, and the unavailable drive side bearing, lip seal and whatever else looks sketchy. Spindle is good. Am I missing anything obvious to the professional? Thanks.

My Snapper SR1028 did not come with snapper gear oil in the chain or differential. Instead, they have some form of grease when I checked.
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 3 года назад
Well snapper gear oil is not the consistency of oil it’s more like thick pudding And when it gets 7 to 10 years old it turns into very thick dried up grease Then after that nothing seems to get lubricated it very well. Jim

Hi Jim, Your videos are great! The question that I have is how do I remove the lock collar from the axel so that I can slide the left fender off?
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 5 лет назад
W P What lock collar are you referring to do you have bearings in your fenders or do you mean the wheel flange that your tire bolts to. Jim
@wendellp33
@wendellp33 5 лет назад
Jim Jackson There is a lock collar with a set screw on the outside of the fender right next to the bearing inside the dust cap. It is not allowing the fender to slide off the axel.
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 5 лет назад
W P OK your machine must be a tough series to have bearings in the fender to remove the fender and bearing from the axle you’ll have to remove the tire and the wheel flange and the dust cap, Now the retaining ring that locks the bearing to the axle should have a set screw in it and it should have a partially drilled hole somewhere in the outside edge remove the set screw put a punch in the hole and tap the ring either to the right or the left that will unlock it from the bearing the bearing has a elliptical Boss sticking out on the edge. The collar Will have a elliptical hole in it when you twist the collar Either to the right or left will Lock the bearing to the axle. You just have to turn it the opposite direction they turned it to lock it on. If you have any trouble get back with me. Jim

Jim Jackson Thanks for the information! It was so easy after you told me the trick. I found that my drive chain broke and sprockets were worn in the chain case. Surprisingly, there was plenty of OO grease in the case. I guess the worn sprockets contributed to the break. I purchased the mower in 1996 and hope to have it running again soon. Thanks again for your help! Wendell

My differential is leaking all the oil out of the right wheel bearing. I need to replace that bushing and seal; do you have a video on that?
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 2 года назад
I don’t know if I have a video that shows just that I do have videos that show doing that in the rest of the video, it’s not really that hard to replace Jack the back of the machine up or stand it up, if you stand it up you’ll need to take out your battery, take the tire off take the bolt out that goes through the wheel flange and axle remove the hose clamp off of the dust cap and pull the dust camp off of the axel if the dust cap is in good shape all you have to do is replace the lip seal to do this clean out all the grease you can throw the whole thing in a cup of hot water for a couple minutes that will soften the plastic and you’ll be able to pull the seal out then throw it back in the hot water to re-soften it and push The new lip seal back in and reassemble your machine if you have any other questions just let me know. Jim

@@jimjackson9381 thanks for that info Jim, I appreciate your quick response. Today I took a good look at the bushing and found that that the inside is out of round. It's off by .011" in one direction. The axle must have too much play which is causing trouble for the seal. I will order a new bushing and a new lip seal as you suggest, hopefully that'll fix the problem. Thanks again.

I have a 1984 Snapper LT11 that i put a new brake band on and I put an ohv harbor freight engine on it and it mows great but my rear wheel bearings are shot and i can't mow until i fix it.. It is a disc drive like this and looks very similar. Are all these disc drive Snappers the same when it comes to the transmission, axle, wheel bearings etc? Mine is not the typical rear engine rider, How similar is mine to a rear engine rider? Also I have access to a machine shop and I have mechanical skills, can I just make my own wheel bushings for the rear? Or are they actually a ball bearing? My Manual shows part #7018822yp for the bushing/ bearing whichever it is, but it looks like they are a discontinued part and are $40 a piece online from the few places Ive found it.. I just cant seem to find any information and discussion on the topic, other than the fact that they are great mowers..I was under the impression that anything Snapper esp parts that fail/wear like bearings would be easy to find anywhere because its Snapper and they seem to be simple but parts seem to be a little rare when i search for them.. This is my first Snapper and any input would be appreciated..

Hi my name is Brian and this message is for Jim 4 anyone that's done this operation before I have to change the lip seal on the differential side I didn't realize it was called I thought it was the reduction gearbox but they're saying it's the differential and I'm looking at the picture and that is the side that I'm having the oil leaking from I believe the rubber the miniature rubber boot and it is slinging oil and grease inner diameter of the rim for the left rear tire and wheel and when you take the hubcap off or the dust cover cap off of the rear left wheel you could see that it looks like there's motor oil coated over that whole thing so oil is leaking out somehow and I'm assuming it's the lip seal I'm hoping the bearing is not bad the only reason I even looked is because I was operating the machine and I heard a whining sound I guess a growling sound or a groaning sound but I did not hear any sort of grinding sound did not sound like yours grinding but it possibly did sound like a chain that was turning and gears that were turning and they didn't have enough lubrication all of my lube has leaked out somehow I'm not sure how much leaked out I'm going to have to take those rubber plugs out and stick my finger in there if I feel a depth of a certain amount of liquid then I know I'm not empty but I haven't done that part yet my disabled veteran and I have use of my fingers and my hands more or less I just have difficulty balance in myself and standing up that's why it's so important that I have my lawn mower operational I only cut about 6,000 sq ft of grass and I know that my 33-in Hi Vac is overkill but it gets the job done and makes it easy for me to do stuff outside and be active if someone could please contact me at their earliest convenience hopefully Jim my telephone number is 240-794-8115 I never screen my calls it could say scam call and I'll pick up the phone it could say block call and I'll still pick up the phone or you can contact me at my personal email address jntspecopsgrp1@gmail.com I'm available Monday through Sunday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. before I have to take my medication which makes me tired and sleepy but I'm assuming Jim probably going to contact me between Monday and Friday which is fine but anybody else contacting me is fine too I really need to know how you change this lip seal how much do I have to really take apart I'm hoping it's just a question of getting someone to lift up the unit for me and set it on its butt and then remove the rear wheel and then change the boot I'm hoping that I do not have to disassemble the fender and the differential box or differential cover housing somebody please give me a hand with this and tell me how it's done because I live on a fixed income from my military disability and the two mechanic shops that do small engine repair meaning lawn mowers they want a ridiculous amount of money it's like they see dollar signs when they see someone like me they're just trying to take advantage so again I appreciate anybody's help if you want to video chat or want me to video chat with you so that I can show you a visual inspection of the unit so that you can get a better idea and make sure that we are doing the right procedure for the problem that I'm having that's fine with me too

To replace that lip seal inside of your dust cover on the outside of your fender behind your tire you will have to take the tire off and the wheel flange. That’s the triangular piece of steel and the hose clamp that holds the dust cap on clean it out thoroughly with a rag, put the dust cap in a hot glass of water and it will pull right out to install the new one so get back in a hot glass of water and push the new seal in reassemble the machine.
