This episode of gear gab hits hard. Good technical info, which id heard arguments for either way and figure the way you followed the hub stresses is also correct, and I appreciate the valve hole hub branding attention to detail. That's really what it boils down to. -A Fellow wheel build nerd

On the topic of prestresssed hubs, I feel you so much! Especially when relace hubs from mass produced wheels: left side is not a mirror of the right, but shifted, and somehow the rim always comes out backwards. And of course the indentations are extremely deep because aluminium isn't that great either.

Wheel building and goalie glove lacing are two things that feel like magic to me even though my technical skills are "beyond" what's required for either one. I designed and built my own steel frame a couple years back, but building a wheel? Hoo buddy no thanks, that's too much for me. That being said, I have been witness to the development of some really cool new wheel building tools from Monolith Tools, they came from the idea garden that is the my neighborhood LBS and the really cool dudes there. Their spoke wrenches are cool, but their ERD caliper is really neat. I just wish I had the confidence to use them, haha.

oh yeah I laced my first wheel back in 2003. Lost count of how many I've done since then. Still need to use a video to get the order/direction right of the spokes tho.

I've never seen the spoke threaded backwards thru the nipple trick before. You just saved me a lot of time that would otherwise be spent furiously shaking a rim until the dropped nipple pops out.

All these weird rules about how a sticker should be oriented, or my favorite, the logo on the tire lined up with the valve stem and so on. Sure, if you are wanting to be precise and picky about such things, but when it comes to the performance of the bike, none of it matters. The most important part of building a wheel is what you mentioned, the spokes pull on the rim on the correct sides and the valve stem is in one of the many open spaces where the spokes run closer to parallel.
