This is unreal...I actually watched the highlights of this match on ITV in 1981..I was 8 years old..The Brazilians were unreal...

Old times when football wasn't ruled only by money and great footballers didn't often go out to europe. Zico was amazing. Top 10 easily.

It shows how great Flamengo were, Liverpool ruled European football since 1977-84 and were very strong so to see them being played off the pitch by a much superior side and Zico one of the worlds best was awesome,

I met a Brazilian once and the first thing he asked me was do you remember Liverpool getting stuffed 3-0 by Flamengo in 1981, I said yes, I remember that game but luckily enough I support Chelsea so I didn't really care about the result.

Watched this in USA at my brother's friend flat.We were the only ones in those days that cared about football in America back then.Didnt matter it was Liverpool seeing as I am a ManU.Great memories.

Those days when Brazilian clubs dominated Europeans. Like Flamengo , Santos . Nowadays Globalization of the European teams made it difficult for S.A. teams to win as their best players are scooped by the Europeans themselves.

Remember staying up all night to watch this, I was 11 at the time. kicked off around 4am as I remember. I remember the yellow pitch ( I figured that maybe it was that hot in Japan that maybe the grass didn’t grow proper) and also constant humming noise of the klaxons, that I’d never heard before. Ah the late 70s early 80s my favourite time watching footy🙂.

Tavy@ flamengo just oozed class back then. That back heel from zico while the ball was still moving at speed as it was passesd to him then zico back heeled it to his team mate was just genius. I watched this game way back in 1981 when i was age 9 and i laughed in admiration when zico did that back heel. I was trying it the next day at school lol. A thinck a tried it at least 20 times, but couldnt do it as it came to me at speed as a pass. I stopped it first then i could do it but it just isnt as good. Its really hard to do. The timeing has to be spot on or you look a fool, as in you cant be a split second late or early, and i mean a split second.

There's names on their shirts which was not typical before the 90's.

It was clear that Liverpool had no love for this competition and it really showed in this game. They had earlier refused to take part in the 1977 and 1978 editions ( which would have seen them go up against Boca Juniors)

I watched the whole match live. I think the match kicked off about 3 00 in the morning uk time. So Zico was out of this world.

I am Flamengo support and was the first game I saw on tV here in Brazil. I do not like to trash Liverpool a fantastic team. The narrator was very nice as well. I do not agree that today our best players are in Europe and this is the reason our domestic football is weak. Actually, our local football is very bad, the talents are not like in the past. Our clubs, even Flamengo nowadays better organized , are not competent to reveal real talents anymore. Football in Brazil has declined . it is sad for us lovers of football and Brazilians.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it: until Brazil return to Jogo Bonito and ditch this conservative European style they're playing now, they may never win another World Cup. Every style has its flaws, but to ditch the style people have come to associate with you is counterproductive in my opinion.

Tavy@ that pitch looked as if it hadnt seen water in years. You could see the dust coming up off it when a player fell or tackled, it was as if they were playing on a gravel all weather pitch, wich is horrible. Also known as red blaze. But how good were flamengo back then, they made liverpool look like an amature team. And that back heel at 7.13 from zico was pure class, and he did it while the ball was moving as it was passesd to him then he passesd it to another player with a back heel. Its really hard to do that, if your a split second late or early then you look daft. Its got to be perfect. Thats why you dont see it as much, but when some one does it its a joy to watch. A watched it 4 times there!
