Jack Hawkins' delivery of "You're all going to die!" is pretty spine tingling. I presume it is actually Hawkins' voice, as I don't think he started getting dubbed until a few years later. He had such a great screen presence and could absolutely nail "impotent rage".

Zulu is one of my favorite movies of all time. A prequel called "Zulu Dawn", was made in 1979 and is equally as excellent, shot in the same manner. Both films are co-written by Cy Endfield, with Endfield directing the original as well. I highly recommend watching the two films back to back, with the prequel first. It really adds even more punch to "Zulu", which is already incredibly impactful.

The sound and direction of this film are really good. The Zulu chants are haunting, filling the air and there are some great, low level tracking shots of the various attacks.

This was my father's favorite movie. I've probably seen it a dozen or more times over the years. We lost him last year and I wanted to watch it again, but the movie was (at the time) unavailable to rent in the U.S. on streaming services, and was unavailable in Region 1 format physically. I ended up purchasing a Blu Ray from Europe, along with a region free blu ray player specifically to see it again. Worth it.

The scene of the Zulu making their war chant is amazing! Really like this film
@dm121984
@dm121984 8 месяцев назад
Indeed, the Zulu's acoustic work on their chants and singing was impressive and, as we're in the British pov, terrifying, which was apart of the intent of the real singing. I do like as well how the film shows at the start how the Zulus managed to defeat a much larger (than rolks drift) force of brits. Tbf, historical analysis shows the commander of the British force of that group was pretty incompetent, and set up his troops badly enough that, in a battle they should have won with rifles, the competent Zulu's managed to overwhelm weak points and crush the column almost to a man with spears and clubs.

It was really cool that Shaka Zuku's descendent got to play his forefather. I wonder how he felt about the experience afterwards?
@philipsalama8083
@philipsalama8083 8 месяцев назад
Mangosuthu Buthelezi - he was the ruler of Zulu territory from the 70s to the 90s and was an important figure in the end of apartheid - though also kind of a dictator accused of human rights abuses. He talked a fair bit about doing the film afterwards. He thought it was very good, and liked the way (I'm paraphrasing since I can't find the exact quote) the movie "portrayed black people as people, rather than as savages or helpless victims that needed to be rescued, which was uncommon at the time". He did some interviews about the film that you can find on YT.

One of my all-time favorite movies. There is no glory. I've always watched it as the sequel to Zulu Dawn, even though it was released 15 years later. The affect both movies had on my young mind is still fresh even today. The horror and fascination of war, I both love it and despise it.
@GuineaPigEveryday
@GuineaPigEveryday 8 месяцев назад
Love this movie, as a history buff and history student, watching this was such a blast, people can retroactively claim whatever they want about this movie being pro-imperial, its just a plain fantastic war film, perfectly orchestrated and thought-out in its sequences and set-pieces. Zulu Dawn (also by Cy Endfield) and Shaka Zulu (1986 TV) are great accompanying pieces. Especially the latter, which was very popular at the time but compared to Zulu ‘64 largely forgotten, and although the two movies are from the British perspective and by Brits and the TV series by white South African and American writer/director, they are all largely respectful of history and while obviously exaggerating and taking historical liberty for adventure-action entertainment appeal, I think they do portray a respect for the Zulu warriors, and both Zulu Dawn and Shaka Zulu are very blatant about being satirical of, and criticising colonial ideologies and assumptions. Shaka Zulu is a wonderfully epic tv series about the first British diplomatic party going to meet Shaka and their experiences with him, as well as his origin, its such a big adventure. Zulu Dawn while less beloved is also really interesting and the battle scenes are fantastic. I feel like these three form a great trilogy of the British-Zulu relations and wars over time, now I just want to see one last movie about the battle that ended the Zulu War.

This was my grandad's all time favourite film and being an 80s millennial I always shied away from it thinking it would be horribly outdated and distasteful. The Zulu king was not on hand for the battle. A young prince ordered it and his force was understrenth for the way Zulu fought wars. He commanded only one impi, the boer in this clip was describing a force of four. There is a neat clip of Cain on the dick caveat show if I'm not mistaken it was never released in the u.s. for obvious reasons. 12 years prior to the film Cain would have been in Korea playing with real guns...for keeps.

Colonial by the Brits or the Bantu? Every film is a film if it’s time. Today I think the acts of one lot would be whitewashed whilst the acts of another would be reviled. Zulu stands above that sort of thing, I suppose that is part of its timeless appeal.
