The Flash: What Went Wrong?

The Flash cost 220 million dollars to make, and with prints and advertising on top of that, really cost more than 300 million dollars. Studios take about 60% on average of domestic box office takings, about 20 to 40% internationally, which means that The Flash will have to make four to six hundred million dollars for the studio to break even. Right now it's made about 210 million dollars- so what went wrong? And don't just say it was sh*t. There's lots of stuff that's sh*t that makes loads of money. Avatar 2, Monsanto. So let's get stuck in.

Something noone is talking about is how poorly this movie has been received by children....According to Deadline it received really low Posttrak Scores from kids under 14(which is a crucial demographic for repeat viewing with CBM's)....I can personally attest to this....I saw Flash with my 12 year nephew and his friends....None of them liked it because they killed off Keaton's Batman and Supergirl....They felt that was depressing and therefore didn't want to see the movie again for that reason.

Well, the movies problems start and end with Ezra Miller, so I'd say it's logical to address that. When the star of your movie is behaving that atrociously, your movie is essentially DBA (Dead Before Arrival), because this movie was always going to be a lost cause due to Miller, something the studio should have realised after the first problems with Miller. They threw millions of dollars on trying to downplay the misbehaviour of the lead actor of a movie that even without that problem could at best hope for a mediocre rating. The movie rehashes the already very worn out "multi-verse/timetravel" tripe and there have been so many reshoots that the whole movie doesn't make much sense (and that's on top of it not making much sense to begin with) in continuity, sequence and even consistency.

Warner Brothers had a great Flash in Grant Gustin... big fan base... and lots of people who only know him as The Flash... but, they decided to go with Ezra Miller for their movies because ummmm... reasons I guess? The Flash TV show also had already opened up the idea of the multiverse for them and they had multiple Flashes... Wally West and Jay Garrick... They could have given them cameos and even John Wesley Shipp from the old Flash TV show that would have provided major fan service in addition to Michael Keaton's Batman (The GOAT, btw)... DC could have had a movie empire that rivaled or probably even surpassed Marvel's (I would say The Justice League was much more well known than The Avengers amongst non comic book readers)... but they keep shooting themselves in the foot and sabotaging their own movies... Batman is dark and gritty... but, Superman and Wonder Woman and The Flash and Green Lantern are bright and colorful beacons of hope... Superman especially... the stories and character development are there... ripe for the picking.... 80 years of comic book lore... stop trying to change and reinvent the characters into something they aren't... because people obviously don't want that...

I saw it opening weekend out of mild curiosity. Michael Keaton was wonderful as Batman and is really the only thing I remember. Miller can't carry a film. It was too long. But it was also not overtly pushing social agendas and was almost the kind of superhero movie that you can comfortably take your family to see. I'd like to see DC keep moving away from the Snyder all-dark-all-the-time style, but also sidestep the Marvel everything's-a-joke style. As always, Christopher Reeve got it right the first time, and if you want to do dark, Tim Burton charted the path for that.

@sunsetman22
@sunsetman22 Год назад
yeah same. Zack chose him because of his performance in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. to his credit, he does convey vulnerability pretty well (in the Snyder Cut at least), but that choice ended up being the absolute worst one in terms of how psychotic and unpredictable the guy is in real life. on the other hand, I think Amber Heard was forced onto him by WB due to Johnny Depp at the time (I believe he mentioned getting her the role during their trial), and he had to bring her back for the knightmare sequence in his extended cut because it's a few minutes of screentime, plus she gets dissed by Jared Leto Joker lol.

Rule of thumb for big movies like this is: Movie budget x 2.5 So with The Flash you will get Movie budget: 200-250 million dollars Print and advertising: 200-250 million because studios usually spend the same amount on print and advertising Studio: Usually gets 60% So if WBD spent 500 million on the movie before releasing it, it will need to make close to 800 million dollars at the box office to break even

The biggest problem with miller is that he has been and is totally unapologetic about any of it. He was told in no uncertain terms to get treatment, likely by authorities and his employers. He didn't seek it of his own volition. He is convinced that he is just fine and everything he's done has been above board, so I don't think we can expect actual change from him. What most people wouldn't give to be as successful as he has been. People far more deserving and grateful.

The poor guy seems to have a serious mental illness, which is obviously untreated. He seems to sorround himself only with people, who don't give him the feeling, that there's something wrong with him, so he probably doesn't even realize how strange his behaviour is (and thus will not get treatment soon). It's rather tragic, I think.

How can such a horrible person exist, in the wild, for so long? How could the studio act as if there'd be no repercussions? Any ONE of these acts would send another individual to jail for years, prosecution within months. Edit: just finished the video, nothing's changed. How much money does he have to settle these problems? HOW DID THE DCU CARRY HIM SO LONG. Having followed the whole thing, I think it's a pattern that Ezra Miller targets trans kids for abuse, I don't think this is somehow an unconscious trend in behaviour, I think they're well aware of how vulnerable trans kids are and how they can take advantage of current anti-trans hate as both a bonding tool to establish abusive relationships and a shield when they're inevitably accused of grooming. If they were targeting cis kids they wouldn't really have that shield, it's fucking disgusting. I fully believe that's in part why there's been so little consequences for their actions, Miller could rape and kill a trans kid and american media would happily cover it up, after all both protecting pedophiles and doing as much harm as possible to trans people is tradition for the american entertainment industry
