"Naked" was one of those "independent" films HBO would play during the day, that's how I caught it. Thewlis was amazing...very high energy 👍

This movie is a solid reminder to actually care about the good people in the world.

I've been waiting for someone to talk about Naked since 1993. I can't say I've seen anything equal Thewlis's performance. My favorite film ever.

My Favourite 'Feel-bad' film of all time. I worried at the first viewing of the movie (17yrs old) that I would end up living like Jonny but I took heart in the message and did a bit better...

I think I saw "Naked" when it came out, and haven't seen it since. You have made me remember how much I liked this movie, I must see it again.

I like to double feature this movie with Fifel Goes West. They're as so similar, it's like watching a remake!

I think you can make of this movie an endless tv series and I'll watch every episode compulsively, not enjoying a minute of it, but forcing myself to experience it for some cosmic design of masochism. As a movie it's very much like it's main character: you'll loathe him for sure, you want him to get a jaw/nose makeover. But at the end of the night you feel strangelly compelled to cover him with a blanket, when he finally passes out in the street.

I saw Naked in a theatre and a few people walked out, due to the intensity of the characters and scenes. It's not a film for the faint of heart. I saw it again a couple of years ago, and it stood up very well, and lost nothing of its intensity. Dare I say, a masterpiece? Just not a masterpiece one can enjoy.

Ok I'm sold, adding this to the top of the list

I remember this movie, it was actually marketed as a comedy. It was one of the many fun and enjoyable movies my friend Clifford dragged me to in the 1990s. Santa Sangre being the other standout fun filled romp.

Interestingly, naked was how I woke up after a sip of Hiptang.

SUCH an amazing film.

Just watched this movie a couple weeks ago and it was as brilliant as it was disturbing. I can’t really think of another movie where the main character was such a despicable person but also pretty sympathetic. Like you want him to turn his life around or do the right thing but you know he won’t and it’s clear by the ending that he probably never will. And that’s one of the fucked up realities of life. People can’t always be saved. Still was a very entertaining movie, a loved the delivery of the monologues and the way I’d be like “this guy might be on to something” to “this guy is making me feel insane” at the same time. I really wanna share this movie w more ppl but with all the rape in the movie, I might be wary of showing it to a chick anytime soon lmao

I watch this movie every day. Along with Snowtown and Eraserhead.

As as youth my couple friends and I didn't care for the bar scene so we went to a lot of movies, all different sorts, including depressing indies like Naked, which was about the most memorable of them.

Stumbled across Naked on terrestrial tv bout a decade ago, it was grubbily hypnotic. Thewlis is always great tho

I saw that film many moons ago. It was a good film, well acted, intense, unpleasant. I’m not sure I was smart enough to really get it though.

Thewlis does a good job in everything he’s in. Even if it’s a crap movie.

Could be that cult classic dystopic Race from '75 - but I'm not confident.

Mike Leigh is a genius, His work is so simple yet incredibly powerful and moving. Naked is a great story of outsiders, and I love it so much. Watch Secrets and Lies and try not to cry though. Goddamn.

Call me a sociopath but I found the movie kind of funny. Thanks for the recommendation, really great film. Really enjoyed Angela Merkel in it too!

I only found out this existed about a week ago. I'm gonna take this as a sign and watch it tonight. Unless this is some kind of psyop, and the synchronicity is a kind of carefully controlled illusion. I'll probably never know.

OMG I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I had a dude break up with me once after going on abt how amazing it was (& esp Thewlis' performance!!), then watching it w/him...he said there was no way a person could like this movie w/o being "sick in the heid" 😂😂 Bullet dodged for us both I reckon 😘

"Naked" was given quite a lot of press coverage here in Australia, back in 93. However, the newspaper and magazine ads were totally misleading, featuring sexed-up and probably touched-up (pre-photoshop) stills showing "ohh this looks sexy" images of a lithe, raven-haired, alabaster-skinned actor leaning over the unseen Thewlis in her "lookame a'hm seeexxy!" pose, down on her hands and knees. I can't recall the name of the actor, but she was the awful houseguest who, like Thewlis' character with his bottomless capacity for alcohol, insults, and cynical nihilism, eventually outstays her welcome at the house and drags her damaged self along with her luggage onto the street and disappears into the city. I knew Leigh's work so was most amused to hear the reactions as I left the Oxford st, Sydney cinema where I saw the film. Mostly upwardly mobile gay men complaining how dreadfully depressing and unsexy it was. For me, it burned the name "David Thewliss" "into my brain and I've been watching him ever since. Even if the film is shite, he is always David Thewliss. That's a damn good thing.

Great film, actually owned a physical copy of it at one time. Hypnotically horrible and entertaining...kind of like After Hours...but not as funny.

How would 2022 categorise Johnny? Dangerous alt-right narcissist, or bug-eyed conspiracy 4channer? Back in the day, we were simply relieved that we didn't have to endure an extended dose of Johnny while we went about our mundane and irrelevant existence. Naked is a deeply troubling, nightmare odyssey that makes for a difficult watch, but is also a revelation, like visiting the mind of an angry and cynical stranger whose endless rant of a world-view infects everything it touches.
