This year I’m just asking for Folded Space inserts. Honestly, having an insert that makes setting up, playing, and tear down easier is priceless! It makes me actually want to play the games
I think this is a better suggestion than a lot of stuff on the list. They're affordable organizers that are fairly easy to assemble. Plus, they're light.
Thank you kindly Chris and Roy for the shout out!!! A backer mention it. It’s very encouraging to think we can improve people lives in a small way with our products. Thank you Dice Tower !!!
Camilla- we aren’t painters, but would love to do something basic with all our Marvel United figures! I’d love to see a series from you or Wendy that show basic painting/washing tips for people who aren’t that artistically inclined or aren’t able to paint something so small in detail.
I might add getting the equipment to build your own accessories or inserts. Exactly what tools depends on the person. Could be just a sharp edge, ruler, glue, and foam boards. Could be extra wood-working tools. Could be a 3-D printer. Pick the thing your special person would like best.
GameTrayz - X-Trayz are a really good item for organizing nearly any game. They come in a variety of colors and split content 4-ways. There's also Y-Trayz as an option. The trays are slighlty more expensive than dollar store containers, but they're worth the added cost. As an alternative bag, that's pricey, the 1520XL bag from Battle Foam is the best bag because it's like a rolling suitcase. A lot of board game bags get to be pretty heavy when they stacked with games. With this one, you never notice it because it has rollers. And, if someone wants to spend more time thinking about getting the gamer a product, there's lots of cool things on Etsy.
Foreteller is a great idea! It often feels that we pay for minimal voice overs on expensive games that don't seem to justify the premium. Now if players want that experience it can be an add-on component just like premium pieces. The core base game can be a more reasonable cost.
Thanks for the great ideas! This list felt fresh and original, usually people suggest things like dice towers and bit trays (which are great, but these were less obvious suggestions).
Tom, I Love you, I do. Been watching you for probably ten years. I hate to be negative but the convention ticket concept really only works if the person is local. The costs of a convention after air fair and hotel is many times that of the ticket itself. So unless the recipient is local or has a lot of disposable income, that is not a great gift idea, sorry for being a downer.
Hubs bought me tickets to a convention (PAX South), and it worked for us because we wanted to vacation there anyway. Tacking the convention onto the trip wasn’t that big of a deal. It really depends on each person’s situation. In our case, I thought it was the sweetest thing ever…especially how he made sure I got the best seats to the session I really wanted by lining up extra early. And he hates line ups. I’ll always remember that.
Hate to correct Kamilla but some people have so little artistic ability that even washes are beyond them. I have done some classes on miniature painting and they are out there, few but there.
Well, I’d assume any good friend would know that and pick something else on the list. No item on the list is guaranteed to work for absolutely everyone. You still have to use your own judgement.
would be cool to tackle this subject: Games that became even better, or get a new turn with fan varias eg. Tammany Hall: The People vs The Scum (file section of TH on BGG).
Normal washes (shown) would be common items for anyone painting minis. Panel liner oil washes would be a better specialist recommendation IMHO. These are GREAT for recess shading on armor. great list though 👍
I'm okay with the fact that my games have a certain negative impact on the environment when they are produced. But advertising capsules for cardboard or neoprene playmats that replace cardboard? That's an extra step towards more pollution. Especially when you take a closer look on how Neoprene is produced. (getting rid of this stuff is another sad story, but let's assume that it is used very long, so let's only look at the production) Would be nice if the dice tower would start to care more about these negative impacts.
I don't understand the appeal of a bag specifically for board games over a suitcase or other random bag/container, especially one with wheels. But I've never tried one, so maybe I don't know what I am missing.
Any bag which specifically fits its contents will protect it better. A cajon or boardgame bag having an interior of 12"x12" will mean those TTR size boxes which are prevalent from publishers will be best protected during trips.
Promos have IMO become an exploitative blight on our hobby. You called it out that they're for completionists, and some people really struggle to control such a mindset. Such a long way from the original mindset of little gifts given out free at shows/cons etc.
If they’re available, then it’s not so bad. We don’t do conventions, so I appreciate when promos are more widely available. BGG store has a lot of good ones (like those Sushi Go Party packs!).
