In this video I plotted a Browning Citori 725 Field 28" Invector DS against a Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen 28" Invector DS, using the same ammo and the same choke trying to make light of the little to no difference in performance of the two cartridges.

A 16 gauge just patterns better than a 12 gauge. 16 is a better gauge all the way around. Don't ever underestimate a 16.

I’d say as far as a complete upland game shot ( dove, grouse, pheasant, squirrel, and rabbit ) the 16 would be my choice…

In my opinion... The 16 gauge seems to always pattern tighter at any distance when comparing 12 to 16.

Longer shot column = less dispersion. So tighter pattern.

Yep. I know them 12 gauge like to kick. Not that it ever bugged me past the 1st semi auto 12 gauges or the 4th grade also. 16 is pretty great though. It has the power with out the kick! Longer range goes with the 12 gauge with slugs or buck shot.

It’s that same amount of shot coming out of a smaller bore. Think of it as having a tighter choke. Would be my best guess as to why you have more pellets on target for the 16

Just inherited a 16g double this year. Trying to get ammo this year has its challenges even more so for the 16. Truthfully, for basic hunting the 16 adds up in its favour for carrying fatigue and reloading costs. Thanks for the great video. Things dont get more like for like short of a gun with interchangeable barrels, even then its not the same. You gotta know your gun. Keep at it and thankyou again.

I've been to a few fundraiser country turkey shoots. These are the closest pellet to center x wins. A little choke, a little shooter, a little luck. But luck runs thin when women and kids were shooting 20 ga guns with less shot. I know the organizers never thought it through completely, but it did occur to me that since they were supplying the ammo they likely could have bought ammo in 3 gauges that had identical payloads and shot sizes. Your test here reminded me of that. It's nice to see the ladies and kids NOT shooting 12ga win as often as anybody else. My wife shoots her Dad's old 870 16ga. She won a round the first time she tried at a rural fire department turkey shoot years ago. We weren't disappointed at all that day. We even brought our own shells. That was a good thing. They didn't even have 16ga available that day.

Shot gun designers and shooters 100 years ago figured this all out. 30” circle at 40 yards . 20 gauge 7/8 oz of shot, 16 gauge 1 oz of shot and a 12 gauge 1 1/8 oz of shot puts the shot of the same size in the kill zone is the best as long as the same chokes are used. I always figured the 16 is the best all round game getter. Only reason it is not popular in the USA. anymore Is because of the rules of clay shooting .Still popular in Europe.

The shot string is shorter in the 12 gauge and longer in the 16 gauge. The thought that 16 gauge patterns better than 12 gauge is not new and appears in older books and articles.

I have read many times that the 16 gauge patterns very well with a 1 oz load, They refer to this as a square load, same thing with the 28 gauge using 3/4 oz of shot.

More than likely it’s the fact that you have the same shot, and same weight, but the bore size of the 16 acts like I choke itself. 12 gauge is roughly .720 while 16 gauge is more like .660

Exactly what I was thinking and it makes perfect sense to me. Makes me wonder if someone could get 1oz in 12 gauge to pattern the exact same as a 7/8oz in 20 gauge, gotta try that soon

I have personally found that the 16ga. and 28ga. Shotguns seem to Pattern tighter than the other Gauges. I’ve been told , but I can’t say it’s true… But the shot column in these two shells are pretty much the same as their nominal shot diameter and for this reason pattern better. But I could have been told the wrong information.

Why is the 16ga have longer range? I'm curious on how to get the most range out of my H&R pardner pb1 16ga single barrel with a full choke. I love it I have duck hunted with it as well as upland hunted with it. The only loads I have issues with is the fiocchi dove loads 1oz at 1145 is just not enough energy to get my gun to cycle. I have shot alot of high velocity and weight loads so this came as a surprise because I only found that out a couple weeks ago and I have had mine for going on 3 years if you have questions about it let me know

As a re loader I can say with a 1oz load on both i load the 12 with 17.5gr (mid load) of powder and the 16 gets 18.2(start load) of powder. Now I will not say what powder,primers or wads i use because I don't want anyone to load up and something to happen and someone to be well so and so said. Now as far as patterns go well you are using 2 different guns and 2 different gauges even though you are using the same style chokes they are also 2 different gauges so I would expect them not to pattern the same. Nice test though what I would like to see you do next is 2 of the same model and gauge shotguns and the same load using the exact same choke and see what the results are

Reloading 16 gauge shells should save you some money. I heard a saying about 16 gauge; carries like a 20 but hits like a 12. Now I'm interested in a 16 gauge! I see there are 16 gauges still being made, but some of the new ones can be really expensive, but there are used ones out there as well. Measuring my options. There are a fair amount of used 16 gauge on the market so that's worth exploring if lower prices are important. You ever shoot a side by side 16 gauge?

12 Gauge has a bigger bore, has a bigger pattern.
@217_sportsman9
@217_sportsman9 4 года назад
12 gauge is a bigger bore than 16 but that doesn't necessarily mean that the pattern is larger this test both of the ammo was a 1 oz load of number 6 lead so since they both have the same amount of lead and the same constriction of choke, choke size is proportional to your gauge. I think why they performed differently is due to what barrel I used on the citori my my guess is the point of impact of the guns are different but I didn't have a large enough sheet of paper to show that

@217_sportsman9
@217_sportsman9 4 года назад
It all just depends on what you want to compare it to for example MY preferred load for pheasant for 16 gauge is fiocchi Golden pheasant 1310ft/s 1 1/8 #5 nickel plated shot now that compared to cheap 12 gauge 2 3/4" #5 is much better but the price is doubled. Now my favorite pheasant load in 12 gauge is Remington express long range #5 2 3/4" has more power compared to the same load in 16 gauge. You can say 16 gauge is more powerful in some cases if you compare good 16 gauge ammo to lower quality 12 gauge ammo (like the ammo shown in the video). In every case I have seen with ammo if you compare the same quality of ammo between the 12 and 16 the 12 is more powerful but not always by a substantial amount like the ammo in this video you probably wouldn't notice the difference in energy in the field. Sorry for the long reply if you want to talk more about it keep commenting or message me at my instagram 217_Sportsman please subscribe I'll have more videos out about shotguns and ammo!

You also get the people who say that 16 gauge isn't a good gauge because they don't offer 3" shells like 12 and 20 but I would disagree I haven't felt the need for a 3" shell in a 16 gauge during any of my hunts. The only time I use 3" shells is if I'm in an area where non-toxic shot is required because steel isn't as dense as lead and you need that extra pellet count to help with knocking down the birds

12 will always be more powerful in the same size shells. However, 16 gauge can definitely be stronger if using a longer shell than the 12. 16 is still more than strong enough 95% of the time, even 20 gauge is pretty viable in most shotgun using circumstances

Every experienced shooter or hunter knows the best patterns are those of 16 and 28 gauge, way better than 12 or 20 gauge, not to mention .410. If you use 20 gauge magnum shells trying to get a higher density of pellets on target it is even worse. The common 12 gauge has only two advantages: more lead against dangerous animals as bears (heavier slugs) and longer shots, usually required for goose and such.

Is 1oz heavy I thought it would be the standard load steel loads are typically 15/16th oz and I have some 1 1/8th oz lead in 2 3/4" shells. For the intended purpose of No.6 lead in 2 3/4" shell (upland hunting) you do not need a 3" or 3 1/2" shell. The only places a magnum shell would be useful is turkey hunting and waterfowl hunting.
