You might note that "maith" & "mhaith" are, in Donegal, pronounced"my" and "wye" with the lenition change. These are the ways I learned to pronounce this word in Cloughaneely, Donegal when I was a young lad.
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 4 года назад
I'm sure they were, sadly Donegal is at the opposite end of the country to me so I'm sure you'll understand if I don't go too deep into the intricacies of the Ulster dialect. Remember it's all the same language anyway and it would be very boring if we all spoke the exact same way.
@pax2902
@pax2902 4 года назад
@@LearnIrish I just meant that you could mention such differences when you present your lessons so that those who come to Donegal are aware that there are variations in pronunciations in often used words such as "maith". Thanks for your lessons. Although I could understand Gaeilge as a child I've been away from the language for a long time.

Míle buíochas Dane. I especially liked "Bíodh lá maith agat", which I recognised as being the past passive. It was great to hear it pronounced. Can it be used in the imperative voice, along with agat or agaibh, to say "have" as an instruction?

In Belfast we pronounce "maidin mhaith" like 'madgey moi' - can't believe the difference in the pronunciation!!
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 4 года назад
There's lots of different ways of saying things in English, for example there is a huge difference between the Liverpool and London accents but it's still English. Just like this is still Irish - it's all the one language.

I love the channel so far, I just joined, but the way that Irish is spelled and you saying what it means is a little hard to grasp. Is there a way to spell how it sounds in English?
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 2 года назад
I'm not really into phonetic tricks as it takes away from the Irish language. You need to start with the basic sounds and pronunciations and use that as a foundation. There's no short cuts and if you want to learn a language more similar to English then try the Germanic languages like Dutch, Norwegian or German. Irish is an ancient Celtic language that has absolutely no obligation to follow the rules and sounds of a much younger Germanic language like English.
@Greg-pe1hw

@@LearnIrish What I was trying to ask was you have the Irish spelling I was only asking if you could spell it the way it sounds in English as well. For instance "Have a good day" spelled in Irish "BÍODH LÁ MAITH AGAT" the way it sounded to me was "Be ick law awe maw ah got" This is what I was asking. By your response it appears I may have offended you, it was not my intention Where can I start to learn the sounds of the way things are apelled in Irish? Clearly you can not as an English speaker apply English rules to the way Irish is spelled.
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 2 года назад
You can use phonetic help like beeik for Bíodh if you want, it's not something I do a lot of because I prefer a more soulful approach. If you make use of www.focloir.ie you will be able to listen to the various sounds from the different dialects of Irish.

Interesting ... but with American English ... I have trouble with the Irish spelling and how to pronounce it. Example: Slante ... you pronounced as "slawn-che" ... not sure how I would know how to pronounce that if I didn't hear it? Do you have a "Dick Tracy Decoder Ring" for the pronunciation or something? Thanks.

@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 4 года назад
No dialect, it's just Irish. I wouldn't get too excited by so called dialects, it's really all the one language. I would advise you to learn Irish as best you can picking up words and pronunciation techniques from all the so called dialects. You are not obliged to pick one particular dialect.
