I fixed the burning out headlights by installing an oversized battery. Not sure why it worked, but it did. It also smoothed out some inexplicable electrical glitches.
I have a 2014 that I bought new. It currently has 207K miles on it. The few issues I've had so far were: airbag recall, oil consumption (about 1 quart every 2500 miles), and headlights burning out. I've had to replace the headlights roughly once per year until I installed LED replacements. The bumper does not need to be removed to replace headlights, you can access them from under the front wheel wells, but they are still fairly difficult to change- I did it so often, that I can change one in about 5 minutes, the first time took me over an hour per side. I've also heard that the short headlamp longevity may be due to a poor ground, and upgrading to a 'triple ground' system for around $100 worth of cables in a kit can cure this issue. The only parts I've ever had to replace on my car were: Serpentine belt, brakes, tires, spark plugs, control arms, tie rod ends, sway bar links and bushings (all normal wear items), Ignition coils, and the driver side window/lock control panel, and now needs an exhaust leak repaired. Overall, this car has been very inexpensive to maintain. The CVT is my main worry with regards to the longevity of the vehicle, as they don't have a very long track record, and are prohibitively expensive to replace, but so far I haven't had any issues with mine.
Regarding the driver side window lock control panel. Currently only my drivers side door locks all other 3 do not lock/unlock using the switch or fob. Did you have this issue or something else?
I have a 2011 Subaru with 185k miles. The only time I had an issue with burning oil was when the Subaru dealer overfilled the crankcase. Then I had a blue smoke coming out the tailpipe, only during morning start up, as there was seepage past the oil rings due to excess oil level sitting overnight. Once the level was corrected, smoke went away. Have NEVER had a low oil issue between 6k mile oil changes. As far as the CVT, I can say SOA is full of sh!t on their “no maintenance” position, especially when a fluid drain and refill at 36k miles is recommended in both Japan and Canada. The CVT belt is metal and produces small particulate over time. This clogs the screens on the solenoids, thus causing the symptoms described in the video. Couple this with Subaru NOT selling the solenoids separate from the entire valve body assembly (nearly $1,000) and this becomes a $2,000 repair. Drain and change the CVT fluid at least every 50k miles…problem solved. Finally, the headlights. I believe this is more an issue with the quality of the headlights used. I did have a headlight burn out, but once replaced with a high quality Osram halogen unit, no further issue. And you DO NOT have to remove the bumper and wheel to change the bulb. Merely turn the wheel inward and take out some of the fender liner fasteners towards the front to access the bulb cap and bulb from the headlight assembly from inside the fender well. Easy peasy and about 5 to 10 minutes, maximum. I don’t know WHERE the producer of this video got all of this misinformation…
He got it from the service manual. Lol I can't access the light by turning the wheel, I have to remove it, but it is still easier than the way you're "supposed" to do it.
On my 2013 I have to add oil every 400-500 miles, basically with every fill up. The transmission overheats after a half hour of 70+mph driving and I sometimes experience shuddering while coming to a stop and or gears not changing properly while pulling away.
I own a 2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R, H6 engine now with 145,000 miles. I have had some excess oil consumption, but the airbags were recalled on millions of cars and hundreds of models including this one as many manufacturers use Takeda. The other issues listed here I have had none of them. Of course I don't have the CVT but a five speed automatic with the bigger engine. Plan to keep the car 200,000 expecting few concerns (we lost the brake cylinder at 130,000 but that was minor). Our dashboard has not melted or any of these problems mentioned. The headlights can be removed through the wheel well, which is much easier than mentioned here. I have replaced each once so far. Never had a battery issue (replaced twice in 11 years). Live in CT, no rust - you have to wash the underside of any car you own in the northeast after every salting in the winter.
2013 Legacy 103k miles, 0 oil burned oil changed every 5k kilometers. Yearly PCV valve cleaning and the EGR cleaning as well. Not a burner or a leaker, just got to maintain them.
I've had my 2011 2.5i since about 50,000 miles, now at 135,000, and I've never had to add oil between changes. Oil changes every 5,000 miles, filled to full line, still reads about the same when it's time to change.
That seems to be the case in my experience. Same applies if you use proper oil filters that are designed exclusively for Subaru engines! (Oil filters that meet the PSI bypass valve spec such as Purolator & Wix).
I have 2016 Legacy 3.6R top of the line - currently has 70,000 miles 1. Hear popping noise from dashboard climate control and radio panels when heater is on - since car was initially bought 2. In 2021, windshield cracked on its own (replacement cost is about $1,500) 3. In 2021, power steering kit failed (replacement cost is about $2,000) 4. Battery dies if car is left not driven for a couple of weeks - since car was initially bought 5. CVT transmission leaked fluid.
I bought a used 2021 Legacy Limited last Dec. w/only 5500 miles on it. I LOVE it. It's so loaded but Subaru thankfully gives you choices on whether or not you want to use all that technology. Most things are easily turned on or off to suit your preference. I advise you to think again about getting one. They are amazing cars, IMHO. Ask me anything.
Lol u crazy not to buy one & believe the crap you see on the web or RU-vid..2010 Subaru Legacy bought it wrecked with 116k miles, fixed it up & has been loyal, now 157k miles 😙..just bought another 2012 Legacy wrecked & gonna fix it up & drive it till it dies ❤️
@@JeffBazell Good that you like the car but you just might want to replace the PVC valve every 30,000 miles to avoid this issue. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cdCGKLNSodk.html
Shudder and near stall is carbon deposits in the throttle. Easy fix. Have it cleaned out. Easy diy for those who are handy. On my outback dealership did it for free when doing timing belt. I did it myself on my other car. Took me a few times to get completely cleaned out.
I've had that happen in other cars as well, it usually Mass Airflow sensor. a few shots at it with a $10 can of Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner is all that it takes.
My 2015 experienced almost all of these. I had the car in 2017. 2018 it needed a new tranny. It got replaced. Now the dealership trying to charge me 2k for the solenoid. My eyesight doesn’t work. My water pump was changed twice. There’s waaaaay more than that 😢
I've found that most of this guy's videos are a bit irrelevant, especially concerning older cars since the issues have been fixed by now. I know quite a few people who own 2012-2014 Outbacks and Legacys and they don't have any of these issues besides abnormal oil consumption compared to its competitors but that's a given with all Subarus.
Up till 2013, the head gaskets will go on the 2.5 Liter normally aspirated engine. It is a case of when but they will go. Now newer Subaru engines have an issue with other engine oil leaks. Seems the RTV sealant used to seal the engine wears out over time, this is also caused by blockage in the PVC valve. Pressure builds up and if the PVC system is blocked the engine oil will blow out the RTV sealant. The engine must be removed to reseal the engine, so this is a labour-intensive job. It will cost you a bundle. This video explains the problem.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cdCGKLNSodk.html
lol some models consume oil 13-14 burn oil (FB sercies). EJ does not burn oil (2010-12). Takata airbag affected everyone. Eyesight was introduced in 2008 in Japan. Subaru BOS absolutely works as intended. Quit layering your floor rmats All those hesitation/stalling/etc are telling you to clean your throttle body.
This will be the last Subaru I buy. I have a 2020 Subaru legacy and I was on the way to go see my grandma in hospice…. They think she’s about to pass. I picked up my dad and then suddenly I started having issues. Luckily there was an autozone cross the street and I took it there… they did a system diagnostics test on it says the ECM is having issues they immediately told me to take it back to the dealer…. I’m so pissed off. I have a lot on my plate right now. I’ve lost a lot of family this year. When my grandma passes she will make the third death I’ve experienced this year. Please pray for me
WTF does your elderly family members dying have to do with the car? Have the dealer check the ECU. I wouldn’t trust AutoZone to diagnose sh¡t. An ECU issue should throw a error code, which would give the technician the exact cause of the malfunction. If on the odd chance it is related to the ECU, it should still be under warranty. Take your Xanax and relax…I’m praying for you…to see your therapist.
I have a 2022 legacy with 7,700 miles on it, in a very heavy rain storm my eye-sight system lite up on my dash and said it wasn't available, but when the rain lightened up the system came on again and it hasn't done it since.
@@robertlagan8441That’s the one I was looking at the other day with 109k miles for around $11,000. Man, it was super dangerous and snowy when I went to the dealership. Literally saw an Altima that flew off the highway and into the woods and a Benz that spun out and hit the guard rail. I was going 45mph around the neighborhood next to the dealership. It felt like driving on butter. I got an Uber home, and I was riding in an Audi. Fastest he was driving was 50mph but was going very careful the whole time.
My Legacy blew a head gasket at 145K after the radiator hose cracked, the fluid leaked out and overheated the engine. I'm heartbroken! I had ever single suggested service on time at the dealer. The month prior, I was informed the tech noticed oil leakage (common for this model/mileage) and the engine should be resealed in time. My subframe also needs replaced due to rust. The cost of repair far exceeds the value of the car. I literally stood in the service bay and cried. I love my Subie but am soooo disappointed.
I have a 2005 subaru legacy 2.5L i and this thing is only now running into problems after owning it for 10yrs now... at 19 yrs old and 106k miles not bad at all, and just minor problems like switching out the old parts lol.
What about the dashboard lights going off on the 2011 model? I've had mine for almost a year and they go off over problems like the catalytic converter melting, coolant leaks, sub frame rusting, etc. They literally just came back on today. My car just keeps having problem after problem! Did I pick a bad year for this model?? 😂
Does he have a link about the extension on the transmission issues? I have a lot of hesitation if I make several short stops and the car will often stall out before starting. I’ve also had a parasitic draw and have gone through numerous battery replacements. Usually replaced at little to no cost since they’re under warranty but definitely a flaw none the less. I have a 2015 with just under 92k. If they’d take care of my transmission issues that’d be great but this is the first I’ve heard of that. Also have loud shaking I believe coming from the moonroof when there are high winds. The whole vehicle shakes and is incredibly loud.
wish I could get a legacy with a rear wiper like that for WA state, love my car but that wiper would be nice. 2013 legacy, 60k miles now 10 yrs old dang time flies. now we get to ride a while without car payments hopefully, ha! good time for it if I must say so myself. change the oil regularly and follow the guidelines from manufacturer on maintaining it and it should last a long time. that's my hypothesis anyway.
I own a Subaru Legacy 2013. I have no issues with most of the things he said I know pretty soon. I’m gonna need a new transmission. That’s my fault cause I beat the shit out of it.😂 the only issue I have is the headlights the only last year before I have to replace them and the windshield wiper sucks. They only lasted like a year before starter to break down that’s about it. I love my car.😂😂
Don't buy any CVT in any car, especially not a used one over 100,000 miles. They are mechanically inferior to traditional auto-transmissions, and even more inferior to manual transmissions.
I just bought a 2014 gt tourer. 4days ago. Did 2 x 4hr drives and it happened to me also. Did other lights on the dash come on such as traction control etc, couldn't use paddle shift? Sensor issue, plug a scan tool in
@@mitchellfreeman3574 so at first i had steady at oil temp light and brake light then i plug in OBD 2 to see the codes and since then i have flashing brake and at temp light🤦🏽♂️ at temp flashes 8 times before stopping for 3/4 seconds. Now i have AWD,brake, trac control and brake light flashing. Can’t figure out the solution
regarding airbags. There was a really bad tornado in el reno oklahoma. Several storm chasers got caught in the tornado and were unable to escape. One car took shelter underneath a small wooden bridge. Their car did not have side air bags. Everyone in that car died. Another car did not make it to shelter, and it got rolled something like 18 times. That car had side airbags, and everyone in that car lived. Airbags are critical for when you least expect it. It can mean the difference of a healthy future, or a future plagued with brain damage.
Missed the only one that periodically 'drives' Me crazy. To wit, when turning engine off, key will not release. After watching many videos, the 'fix' is to squeeze shift knob repeatedly.
You literally just made a video about how crappy the 2014 legacy is because most of the things that you said have problems or from that are only one of the problems were with the 2020 logically the 2018 era would be the best one
