You forgot 50 First Dates. No matter how you look at the ending, she still has amnesia and still forgets her husband and child every day and needs to be reminded. That poor kid will need therapy as an adult. And one wrong move from any of them will send her into a horrible panic.

Well, Woman in Black has more of a bittersweet ending. I never saw it as out and out happy, just bittersweet since he's reunited with the woman he loves, but he and his very young son had to die in the process. Also, the ghost didn't win. Because she didn't get to take his child, and keep him bound in her Purgatory for all of eternity, away from his loving parents. Instead, since he and his dad died together, he went with him and his mom, and are with them in Heaven, a place she and her children may never see.

The conclusion of the comics were clear: Of the last things Ozymandias and Dr Manhattan say to each other, is something like: Oz: "I saved the world in the end, didn't I?" DrM: "In the end? Nothing ever ends." followed by the scene with the journal. Essentially, the ending was ALWAYS meant to be ambiguous.

In the novel, or you can zoom in the insurance investigation report in the movie, you can see that there are a few points suggesting the second story is also made up. I think the 4 people on the boat were Pi's family. The zebra/Buddhist with a broken leg is Pi's father cause he is a cripple. The ape is the mother. The hyena/cook is the brother cause he is also disrespectful to other people's religions. The tiger is Pi's evil side There was scene where the Pi's brother told little Pi to steal the holy water and the priest said to Pi "You must be Thirsty" (Thirsty is the name of a tiger) Implying that the brother was the one who was responsible of causing Pi to become evil

Let the Right One In is a great example for this list. I saw it with my mom and she said the ending was "sweet". She's the type of person who needs a movie to end well, haha. I had to point out that it might seem sweet, but in reality, the boy is doomed to the same life as Eli's original companion. Even though Oskar loves her, she'll never age or die. And he'll waste his entire life for her. It's ridiculously tragic.

The whole thing with star Wars was true for Legends where the Civil War raged on for 15 more years with Gradn Admiral Thrawn coming back from the Unknown Regions and Palpatine possesing his clones of himslef multiple times. In the new Canon Palpatine had a plan that would send the Empire on a suicidal last stand on Jakku a year after his death. The First Order was then formed when the father of Admiral Hux (alongside Hux) and other high ranking Imperials jump to a hyperspace coordinate in the Unknown Regions and discover the Ecplise, Palpatines personal Super Star Destroyer. The FO was then viewed as little more than an organised group of Imperial remenants since they stayed in the Unknown Regions most of the time.

Inception shouldn't be on this list. If you paid attention while watching the movie, which I know from previous lists how difficult that is for WhatCulture, you would have heard Saito explain that if Fisher kept the business going it would inevitably and soon have a world-wide monopoly on energy. Now while monopolies aren't inherently bad, it's safe to say they should be avoided where possible. Yes, Saito may have a self-interest to keep making a ton of money, it still doesn't leave the film as a "bad" ending.
@Dim2134
@Dim2134 7 лет назад
Also an energy monopoly is probably a worst-case scenario for any kind of monopoly at all. Seriously, that's basically a monopoly putting that company in a supreme seat of power world wide.
@cuyhater
@cuyhater 5 лет назад
That was Saito's claim. He is Fischer's business rival: his claim is therefore suspect. Determining the potential dangers of a potential monopoly is the province of international trade commissions. Cobb falling for Saito's scare story is the same as someone falling for Bill Gates saying "You know that guy who runs Apple? I think he should be taken out." What Cobb and his ghouls did to Fischer was monstrous on a whole lot of levels, period.

97% of the horror movies do that
@adamgray1753
@adamgray1753 7 лет назад
One of the most popular horror movies of all time, The Exorcist 1 and 3, are exactly this way, Carlos Henrique Prado. In the first Exorcist the movie shows the exorcist had ended and all is sunshine and farts. However, if you take close look at the ending of that movie you'll notice the exorcism failed... miserably. The lead exorcist was murdered by the demon. The demon then immediately began to jump ship when he realized the physical vessel (the girl) he had been possessing all this time was on the verge of physical death so he had to jump ship to save himself and the various forms of progress he had achieved at that point in time. The surviving priest got demonically possessed temporarily or rather for a few seconds, but long enough for him to willingly throw out the demon of his physical vessel, but unfortunately for us he was a weenie and literally threw himself out the girl's two or three story window and managed to throw himself down the adjacent semi-long public staircase which killed the priest. In The Exorcist III this is all explained in horrifying detail over the course of the movie why and how things went down since the end of the first Exorcist movie. How nice of the director! Playing catch up can be such a hassle sometimes. Hah! Anyways, by the end of this movie we have a Peat and Repeat joke setting itself up here as it's another exorcist showing up to show down the devil himself. Then we have the hard line cop who's a darn good investigator. He shows up shortly after the priest is initially defeated by the seemingly god-like demon who by this point in the movie has an unknown number of souls he's using apparently as power sources at the very least. This demon is so powerful by this point in the movie that it requires literal divine intervention for salivation to be even remotely plausible. During this extremely important point in the movie, the original soul of the physical vessel who is the same priest who killed himself at the end of the first Exorcist movie yells and demands to the cop in the cell with him to shoot and kill him already. After what feels to be an eternity of "WTF!!" the cop murders his friend. In this ending the gruesome aftermath is shown immediately, but the movie quickly ends thereafter What happens here is this exorcism too fails! At this point the original demon is actually rapidly reaching the level of demi-god making him the next big boss of a Final Fantasy game. So all in all lesson learned - when the demons you fight are seemingly all-powerful you don't send a single priest do dispatch said Magickally powerful demons, you instead a team of the best and a number of trainees so they can learn the exorcism craft from the more experienced exorcists in the form of on-the-job training. In the end of all of it, the demon has become powerful enough to actually stand a legitimate chance to usurp Lucifer's place at being the one to destroy all of Humanity and the Earth in the near future. Granted from the looks and sounds of it from the third Exorcist movie the demon is like Samus Aran to a point when he's defeated through the death of whatever physical vessel he's inhabiting - suffering the loss of alot of energies, and special abilities he had before, but through hard work and determination he regains his lost abilities and energies only to become a far greater threat than he was previously.

Unobtainium isn't needed to save the Earth, it's just the most valuable mineral ever discovered
@Thane36425
@Thane36425 7 лет назад
It wouldn't be so valuable if it was useless. I'm sure Pandora has a lot of pretty rocks but they won't be worth the cost of such a major operation to go get. Supplementary materials said that it was a natural superconductor and far superior to anything artificial. That made it useful for spaceflight, power generators, etc.

@Folker46590
@Folker46590 7 лет назад
The official website described Unobtainium as "VITAL" to the survival of the humans race. Why? Because it's unusual properties makes anti-matter reactors possible, think dilithium crystals from Star Trek. It's why humans can get to Pandora in six years because the ships anti-matter engines can move the ship to a high percentage of the speed of light. Plus the Earth needs anti-matter reactors to supply humanity with power since almost all other forms of power generation have been fully exploited or used up, like all the coal mines are empty and oil is to useful to be burned. Unobtainium is needed to buy time for humanity to develop real interstellar flight (warp drive?) before Earth's ecosphere collapses completely and billions of humans die. This is not explained in the film because it would justify what the humans are doing and Camaron wanted a purely anti-corporation, anti-human film.
@NeveranticStory
@NeveranticStory 7 лет назад
Which is why the Avatar's ending reminds me more of a C&C Tiberian Sun 3 , when Scrin, an alien, far superior race deploys a mining operation on Earth overshooting their judgement regarding the native civilization, then they get defeated via natives resolve and deus ex machina, but in the end it is hinted it was all but a mining operation with a small security force, not a full blown military campaign, and it turns out a full invasion force is being prepared when humans are celebrating "victory". So yeah, I doubt Jake from Avatar doomed Earth, if anything he doomed Pandora, because if unobtainium is even remotely as vital for humans as it is hinted, in another 6 years they can expect humans coming back with a whole fleet, but this time not armed with drilling machines and some task force that can fit into one hangar, but with an actual military, and heavy gear designed for large-scale warfare. Which is the concept I'd love to be explored in Avatar 2.

In “Avatar”, I don’t remember “unobtainium” being necessary for Earth & humanity’s survival. It was just a very valuable mineral that the corporation wanted to sell. The real reason why it’s not a happy ending is because the corporation’s HQ on Earth is now going to send all it has against the Na’vi.

Unobtainium has actually been used to describe the theoretical perfect material i.e. no mass, ultimate strength, perfect conductor/insulator, etc. The name is actually used quite often in the aerospace industry and was, for a time, the slang for titanium when it was gaining popularity. It was and still is meant to be a silly but fun way to describe a near perfect material for what you need in a design.

The Avatar one is a bit oversimplified. Humanity has fucked itself over by destroying Earth's ecology. They are using Unobtainium (based on a real chemistry joke) as a high-temperature superconductor for Fusion (basically solving the real-life issue of modern superconductors in fusion torus of requiring massive super-cooling refrigeration units). By the time that the movie takes place, humanity already has a large amount being shipped back to Earth, nor has Cpl. Sully prevented humanity from exploring other planets for mining. Also, it's kind of hard to have a bad ending in the first entry of a series ;)

Even in fairytales, life continues so problems continue. If your idea of a happy ending is one in which the hero goes on to have a problemless life, then Woman in Black is actually a happy ending. Otherwise, the fact that there will still be problems and conflicts for some of these characters and consequences doesn't negate the "happy" ending to that particular conflict. In Inception, companies are disbanded and destroyed all the time, it's not like Saito was a supervillain that had plans to end the world. And Avatar was absolutely a happy ending. If you burn your house down and then go and steal someone elses, you are absolutely the bad guy and if you lose, it is a happy ending.

In the book Arthur's family does die in a tragic way, but he does eventually move on and writes the book as a form of closure. It has what in my opinion the saddest ending out of the series because while he does move on (and even remarries)he's still haunted by what happened and has to live with it for the rest of his life, Jennet got what she wanted (to spread her pain to others, not kill Arthur) but still hasn't moved on he has to live with the fear of history repeating and the trauma from the last time. The 2012 film (which is garbage, don't watch it) completely took away the real tragedy of the ending. By the way the 1989 film is amazing, go watch it right now.

I will say, in the ~book~ Life of Pi, Pi Patel argues to the Japanese businessmen (while in a hospital, just after finding land) that the bones in the boat he lived in could only belong to a Meerkat or smaller rodent. They're too little to belong to an orangutan, hyena, human, or tiger, and not the right ones to be a bird, so Pi would have had to have landed on the floating, carnivorous island full of meerkats to get the bones. So his original story is true. But I can see how maybe the director purposely left this bit out so that the is-it-real feeling stayed with the audience.

WELL the movie has the scene nobody talks about: Richard Parker apparently having an image of Pi and then running to the jungle. Suggesting not only Richard Parker came to like Pi, but that he was real. ALSO Pi tells the fisherman the Tiger story first, implying that's the real story and Pi just told the other story as believable. Even though the "real" one is likely scarier.

Siiiiigh, this video completely misses the point of Life of Pi. The point is that there's no way to prove which story is true, even if one is more "believable." The point is that it's your choice to believe what you believe, and the point is the believing itself, not whether or not it's true.

Lane Funai in the case of Life of Pi, it doesn't matter which you believe. They both show a struggle, life, desth, horror, survival, ingenuity, etc. Both stories. Ao the point kinda could be said that it dpesnt matter how you tell the story or if you sugsr coat it, as long as the message is spread. Kind of like old school gangsta rap vs old school soul. For the most part they had the same message of struggle but one sounded nicer while the other was more gritty and raw. To the point there were protests held to stop it from being told that way

The Jungle Book one is quite true. It's written in the original books. Mowgli is living in the village, when someday Shere Khan shows up again. With the help of animals, he kills the tiger, but is then acused of using witchcraft. He leaves the village and starts to live in the jungle again. Later, he finds out, that his adoptive parents have been imprisioned because of him and are about to get executed. He manages to free them, but while his mother is happy to see him, his father shows no warmth towards him anymore, because he lost all his money and stuff. His parents flee to another village and Mowgli then starts to make plans for his revenge. He gets all the animals on his side but tells them, he does not want to make it in one blow, but to let them suffer over a longer period. So they are hunting the cattle, destroying agriculture etc. over the time of some month. At the end, the elephants destroy the hole village and killing everyone, who didn't flee yet. Mowgli is satisfied and continues life in the jungle. End.

The gravity story was complete crap because the science was nonsensical. Any major change in velocity to any object in orbit, like from collisions or explosions, would send most of those objects either plummeting to earth or to a higher orbital radius, and even to escape velocity. There would be no high speed mass of debris within the same orbital radius. All objects in that orbital radius, by the laws of physics, must be moving at the same speed, or else they must change their orbit. The movie also neglects the incredible vastness of space, even if we just limit it to the Earth's gravity well.

I like to think of myself as someone who in most cases can 'see' the way a movie is going to end before it gets too deep into it. However, The Sixth Sense threw me for a loop. My jaw dropped so hard it made a dent in the theater floor. To think Bruce was helping this boy claiming to see ghosts and the whole time, spoiler alert, he's a ghost. Of course I should've watched more closely. The way no one ever talks to him after the gunshot and the way he always wears the same clothes. I was disappointed mainly in myself for not even considering that as a possible ending.

Cid's mother is alive at the end of Looper. Also, his jaw would probably be ok. The implication was that he had to get it replaced because he went too long without treatment in the original timeline. With his mother alive and able to see to his needed immediately, he's less likely to become a homicidal maniac.

@peterkaplar1660
@peterkaplar1660 6 лет назад
Looper: Cid is already mentally scarred. He killed a man, not many people come out of that sane. Jungle Book: Mawgli can be clearly reintegrated. Okay, I'm biased with today's standards, but he is reintegrated in the book. And it's a Disney cartoon, so it's not possible to have a bad ending. Gravity: the space debris problem can be solved, but it requires massive amounts of money. Watchmen: I believe that one person's diary may not change the whole outcome. Withouth real proof Rorschach's journal might not be considered good enough evidence of Ozymandias' machinations. And he's clearly influential enough to shrug it off easily, with the assistance of the other heroes. Inception: it's an everyday thing to cause some business empires to collapse. Some people are heartless enough not to care about consequences.

Also, it's kind of hard to have a bad ending in the first entry of a series ;) Also, Jake was preventing the genocide of multiple (including some sentient) species, and preserving na'vi independence and Inalienable Human Rights (assuming that they can be extended to all sentient individuals)

Jeremy Truesdell Well defeating humanity will only cause them to return in a much larger force like any good imperlistic culture. This will probably happen in the constantly delaying sequel. So just like the ending of episode six it really only marks the beginning of a much larger conflict when you give it enough thought.

As much as I love 500 Days of Summer it did occur to me that the ending may not be as positive as I wanted to think. I was like "oh hey, Tom found this pretty girl named Autumn and she seems better than Summer", then I realized that since the last girl was named Summer and this girl is named Autumn, what if it's really a vicious cycle where Tom ends up breaking with Autumn, moves on to find a girl named Winter, breaks up with her and finds someone named Spring, and you know the rest of the story.

I personally disagree that in Woman in Black, the ghost wins. The reason she was so angry was that her sister (I think her sister? It's been a while) was ultimately the reason the Woman's son died. They were in a carriage accident and it was sinking into mud or quicksand or something like that, and her sister jumped out, leaving the child behind to die. When Arthur learned this, he went into the mud (with the help of a friend so he wouldn't get stuck and suffocate) and retrieved the boy's body, and then he left the body in the house, reuniting him with his mother. At the end, killing him was her way of saying thanks. It was established that Arthur was deeply depressed ever since his wife died. Even his son could plainly tell how bad it was (there's a scene where his son draws him a picture, and Arthur asked why he was frowning in the drawing and the boy said "That's what your face looks like.") So, the Woman, in her own, convoluted way, was really just returning the favor. He reunited her with her son, so she reunited him with his wife. It's terrible that the child died as well, but how happy would he have really been if he was forced to grow up an orphan, especially in a time period when orphanages were some of the most horrible places to grow up.

If unobtainium is important enough to justify genocide it is worth sending in the big guns.

Actually, the initial mission of the protagonist of Avatar was to coax the tribe to migrate to a different location in order to make a profit from the natural ore in the land that the tribe was situated, it made no mention of the earth’s survival being dependent upon the protagonist’s success of his mission. And the journal that Rorschach left only had the information that Ozymandias was behind the murder of the Comedian, the death of certain individuals who knew of the plot and the cancer given to others, causing Dr. Manhattan to exile himself. He only had written what knowledge he had at the time, which was that there was a larger plot in play. It wasn’t until Ozymandias revealed his plan in full when there was no way to stop it, especially when it showed President Nixon on the screens mentioning negotiations on the perceived threat, which was all after Rorschach had left his journal with the newspaper. This means that there may be some implications to Ozymandias for the deaths of some people, but not enough to link him to deceiving the world into uniting against a common enemy.

I would have definitely put 2009's _Surrogates_ high up on the list. Never read _The Surrogates_ comic books from 2005-2006, so I can't comment on it, but here is a summary: humans learn to make remote controlled androids but you need to be in some sort of pod to control it, crime and discrimination is all but eliminated, and the protagonists misses his wife. Due to one killer who murders a handful of people, the protagonist brings down the whole system of remote controlled androids and people have to emerge from the control units... happy credits roll as he embraces his wife who hasn't dilapidated at all and humanity is saved. Saved to go back to a life of crime, to having people losing their jobs because they physically can't do them, and all the horribleness that existed pre-surrogates like accidental deaths and so on. Thanks for stopping a couple of murders from a single unique individual and bringing back a world of hate, suffering, and homicide in the thousands upon thousands Mr. Protagonists - what a happy ending.

Not sure I agree with the Jungle Book one. The difference between Mogli and most feral children, is that Mogli's general development has progressed somewhat similar to the average person. Unlike certain cases, such as 'Genie' - Mogli has already acquired language, which is one of the most important aspects for cognitive development. Plus, he was integrated into some form of society, and understands rules and structure... It might be abnormal for him, but I'm sure he'd learn... in terms of where he shits, is that any different to certain areas of India??
