This is the best step by step video that actually explains everything so I could understand it. Thank you! I noticed in the video that you used a plastic sheet as water barrier as opposed to roofing felt and was curious as to why? Will be using this as a reference soon when I am repairing a leak.

Thank you for the thorough video! I think I will be able top do my roof patch now. I just saw the list of materials too. This is just great. The next thing I need to learn about is how to properly install metal flashing at the junction of a shed roof and the wall where the piece of roof I need to replace meets it. Just in case you are looking to make some more great roofing videos.

My 14 yr old house had water coming through in master bathroom roof. I have a pass through fireplace in master bedrm/master bath. Last January. I had roofing company come and see - they said I needed ‘debris’ cleaned and some flashings replaced. And some tiles near both chimneys were cut. Cost was $3,200. They cleaned all the debris from the valleys and cut some of the tiles back away from chimneys.This was Jan 2023. Here is what they wrote on my invoice: “ An inspection of the roof was undergone to determine what maintenance was required.
We found the tiles behind the two chimneys to be too close to the chimneys allowing debris to build-up which caused the water to overflow. This was repaired by cutting the tiles by 6" to allow the water to properly flow.
Secondly, we found the valley metal ends were on top of the tile and this causes the water to spill over the valley and run allow the underlayment, which can cause the underlayment to prematurely deteriorate. This issue was repaired by cutting back the valley metal ends and installing a lead extension on the five valleys.
Lastly, we found the valleys and cricket to have debris. We underwent a clean-up, which will allow the water to properly flow…” We had a lot of rain in Feb and March and even some in August. All seemed, but to my shock, last week, I noticed a stain on ceiling of a bedroom not anywhere near where the January leak was. But this bedroom backs up to living room in area where there is another fireplace/chimney. I don't know when this happened. I seldom go in that bedroom and I seldom look at my ceilings. But water must have gotten in somehow. . I called the roofing company and left a message. Waiting for them so call me back. I got a ladder and went up to feel the stain and there is no wetness or puffiness on the ceiling. November is a month we often get rain. Of course if we get rain before the roofer calls me back I will be sure at watch the ceiling where that stain is. Is it possible that there was an unnoticed issue in this room but no problem NOW since the roofer worked on BOTH chimneys?

First time here. That was really impressive.I have several soft spots on a flat roof and am going to take a whack at it using this same technique. I figure some of the plywood has disintegrated, just hope the rafters are in good shape. Total novice but have a jig and circular saw......;}

The nails should never be exposed. You never put nails at the exposed bottom.

I enjoyed watching your video, lots of useful information; I noticed you used 3 nails per single,in other roof repairs videos they said 4to6 nails per single is recommended;did I miss something?
@AurumRoofing
@AurumRoofing Год назад
Thank you for the comment. 4-6 nails are always recommended for full shingles, but in some cases, you have to cut the shingle to fit your patch/work area and only need half of a shingle then you don't need 4-6 nails since it's not a full shingle. Great question.

Question. Other than appearance issues, What problems can arise from putting shingles over roofing felt that isnt perfectly flat? Im putting a roof on my 23'x16' garage with a 6/12 pitch. I dove right in uneducated and chose 15lb felt paper. I was unable to finish the job quickly due to my inexperience and schedule. Wind and weather have blown and torn the paper. However the lower half of each side is already shingled. The starter strip and the drip edge are already on. The paper has torn under the starter strip and drip edge. Should i pull them up to replace it? Cut the paper to get it flat and patch new paper over it?
@AurumRoofing
@AurumRoofing Год назад
I would say to leave the existing felt, cut it, slice it, and dice it "Zoro" style, lol. Cut it till its flat, then immediately go over the existing felt with a new layer of fresh 15lb felt, just watch your step and don't fall or slip stepping on the torn felt. Do consider this; You must plan accordingly. If you think you can only felt and shingle one side per session, then only install felt and shingle on that one side and leave the other side for a later day. Doing this will save you time and labor and also ruining the exposed felt. Felt or any underlayment is not meant to be left exposed to the elements of the sun. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment.
@WarMachine550
@WarMachine550 Год назад
@@AurumRoofing I appreciate your reply! It is helpful! This is my first attempt at roofing. A skilled roofer could have this done in a day or two. My eagerness to get it done has led to poor planning and understanding of the materials. The 15lb felt on a 6/12 pitch was a big mistake. It has slowed the job immensely. Rips snd curls way too easy underfoot! I'll cut and cover as you suggest. The new felt may have to be over instead of under the drip edge on the gables. The starter strip shingles are already on, so they are obstructing lifting and tucking the new felt under the drip edge.
