Who knew Kiwis could be this wild…I’m sharing 12 things that I’ve observed that they actually do here in New Zealand that you definitely wouldn’t see over in the states. After moving south of the border, I have been collecting all kinds of similarities and differences between New Zealand and the USA and now I get to share them with YOU. Yay! I hope you enjoy this one=)
My fiancé, dog (Mr. Barkley) and I made the big decision a few years ago to move to New Zealand for a bit of adventure and to get away from the city. This year we are focusing on a more minimal, calm, and healthy lifestyle (hence the farm house in the middle of nowhere) in preparation for starting a family in the next few years.
I have degrees in Holistic Nutrition and Psychology and I'd love you to follow along with us as I share some healthy habits, gluten and dairy free recipes, ideas on minimalism, honesty and hopefully a little entertainment as I document our journey=)

In NZ, the word 'black' refers to a color, not an ethnicity. Which it should.
@KiwiPokerPlayer
@KiwiPokerPlayer 2 месяца назад
Specifically, the colour of our national uniform, which is black. The story goes that "All Blacks" came about due to a communication error when sending the story from the UK to NZ when we were on tour there. The commentator had called the NZ team "all backs" since our forwards were as fast as their backs. Our uniform is all black, they thought he said all blacks, the name stuck. It's only about the colour of the uniform.

Two stories are given. 1. when asked what uniform they were wearing, they answered that they were wearing "all black: (Black jersey and black shorts.) 2. The other is that the commentators said that they were "all backs" and were misquoted. It could be that one, both, or neither of these stories is true. Make up your own mind.

Towing. (Research "Number 8 Wire" attitude) Kiwis grow up with a 'I can do it myself attitude' , which means, not only I'll do my garden, but also fix my car, (tractor,), move house/flat, or any number of DIY things (including plumbing and power) . So the typical kiwi family has a Dad (or grandad, uncle, etc) with a trailer, and a car with a tow bar. Until just recently, generations of families holiday would be camping, or caravan, and pastime was fishing... and so trailers became part of the family fleet. So yeah... we tow our own stuff.
@staceysparadise

Most of us also obey the towing weight limits, so its not like a massive american camper being towed by a honda civic. More likely a small trailer with some garden cuttings.

Kiwi here, i work at a gas station. If someone forgets to pay or intentionally drives off(the difference is often obvious) the plate is captured on camera, noted down and it goes on to a nation wide system(of the same company) that tells attendants not to activate that pump, so you have to prepay and we will notify you of the issue. Once the outstanding debt is paid your plate is removed from the system.

I couldn't figure out how to get fuel in the US. The first few places I tried they wouldn't authorise the pump, so I left. Eventually I went in and asked and they said I had to pay first. "but I don't know how much I'm going to take!" So they got me to authorise 50 dollars on my card. Started pumping and it clicked off after about 1/2 a litre, and then it wouldn't dispense any more. I pulled the trigger but nothing. I went back into the shop and they refunded 49.70 on my card. They refused to just turn the pump back on. So my card charged me a 5 dollar foreign transaction fee for 30c of fuel. It's the most stupid bloody system!

They're called state highways cause they're owned by the 'state', which is the NZ government. NZ is a country in the form of unitary/central state (ie doesn't share powerb between multiple states). France for example is also a unitary state. And it's common to refer to the government as the state. Ever hear of the phrase 'head of state' for a president or monarch?

Re the towing observation, you're so right. The lack of towbars is the first thing I notice overseas. My first car back when I was 16 (in the 60s) was a small, old low powered English car. First job was to have a neighbour make a towbar, fit it, then build a small trailer. Towing stuff is part of Kiwi 'do it yourself' DNA. I recently bought a new fridge freezer. Did I pay the $80 delivery fee? The hell I did, hooked up the trailer and picked it up.

The typo referred to was in 1905, not 1805. In that year the NZ National Rugby team toured the UK and one UK writer referred to their style of play was being "All Backs" -(ie: all the players, forwards and backs alike) played as if they were backs meaning All the players were running freely and going thru the defensive lines of the opposing forwards) His editor misread the word and they were, forever more, The "All Blacks" as that was the first time the team had used their all black woolen Rugby uniform. It kinda stuck! (The 1905 team earned the nickname "The Invincibles" as they never lost a game in the UK, the only team to do so until quite recently.)
@fencepost8478
@fencepost8478 Год назад
The 1905 team lost to Wales, it was the 1925 team that did not lose. The "All Backs" typo is dismissed by many Rugby historians as very unlikely, the reason they are called the All Blacks is beause of their All Black uniform. The first time they wore All Black was 1893, not 1905.

FYI: The NZ judicial system is base on the British one; a “solicitor” deals with conveyancing, wills, and other legal matters. A solicitor can instruct a barrister who can represent them in Court cases, and so is said to represent them at the bar.

Seems a lot less formal here in NZ to the UK, choosing to affirm rather than swearing on the bible, defendants not getting dressed up for their appearance, (although I attend in uniform) and defendants speaking for themselves rather than being represented, certainly in the 4 cases in which I have acted as a witness.
@emilytyler6381
@emilytyler6381 Год назад
Hey :) that isn't quite correct. In NZ solicitors and barristers are basically the same thing - when you're admitted to the bar in NZ, you get admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of NZ. So any 'solicitor' in NZ is also a barrister and able to represent someone in court. But in practice, there are lawyers who only do court work (who refer to themselves as barristers)

New Zealand like all countries is a state, and some roads are state highways which are maintained by the state (central government) for the benefit of everyone. Compared to local roads that are managed by local city government (city council) mainly for the benefit of local residents.
@brettpeacock9116
@brettpeacock9116 Год назад
Those "local" roads were (Not sure if they still are) known as Provincial State Highways, Meaning that the provinces shared all maintenance costs with the National Government. An example is the Road between Whangarei and Dargaville in Northland (PSH 14?) It is about 70 km and runs between Whangarei on the Eastern coast and Dargaville on the Western coast. Many of the roads in the Coromandel are similar. Essentially, minor maintenance (Potholes, Repairs and Sealing) was the responsibility of the Provincial Authorities and major work (like Bridging, Widening or Re-Routing/Diversions) was done by Central Government.

One thing I noticed about Americans is if you ask them where they are from they will say they are Italian/German/Irish /whatever because their ancestor migrated 400 years ago from that country, it seems Americans are obsessed with race, they define themselves by whatever country their ancestor migrated from or trafficked from. Absolutely, as a kiwi who has been travelling and living abroad for many many years this is something that took me a long time to get used to, it's not just the States it's a lot of countries, people are really obsessed about what ethnicity they either consider they belong to or are descended from, and it's so important to them that they add it to their nationality. It's extreme in Australia, there is a clear and obvious delineation between white European descended Aussies, Lebanese Australians, Italian Australians, Vietnamese Australians, and most sadly indigenous aboriginal Australians. Growing up in NZ I don't remember being particularly aware of people's ethnic origins, it was only something I thought about if we were discussing it for some reason, and "Kiwi" to me as a culture and a people has always been the homogeneous combination of Maori and non Maori New Zealanders, take one out of the equation and it wouldn't be kiwi.

Quick , hopefully, history lesson. For over 100 years all our products, wool, butter, meat, apples and cheese etc went to Britain. Our farmers were paid a subsidy to be used for farm improvements, and our food was also subsidies. Some time in the 1960 as our production and innovation over ran demand the meat, wool, fruit and vege boards looked for new markets and the EU was floated. Remembering that our population didn't hit 3 million until somewhere in the late 70's or early 80's. By that time Britain had joined the EU and we now had a surplus of products with no buyers in the middle of an oil crisis and a local wage freeze. 1984 comes round yah we are nuke free, and oh horror we are about to default on a payment to the world bank. The first time in our history, so instead of talking to the world Bank working something out Douglas and his cronies took a radical step, which he later said that if it was any other country there would have been blood in the streets. They removed the subsidies from the farmers and the food, meaning we pay landed export prices.

Kiwi here, (who visit Canada annually). Sorry about the rain.... but, hey... it's Winter. Passing lanes are common in Canada, so what happens when Americans cross the border? Ha ha. Real difference is the NZers believe other Kiwis are neighbours, friendly, and not invested in the "Me first, before you" culture. In the US they call 'Freedom' the right to do anything, even at the expense of hurting others. Alas. they want guns to protect themselves from.... other Americans! Which is sad. As for lawyers, You should also look at the history of, and discuss A.C.C. (accident compensation) laws there that was 8ntroduced in 1974. It removed the tendency to find fault or blame, in an accident or injury, and then sue someone for compensation (often lots of money). Instead, all medical and recovery cost from accidental injury is covered by ACC. The impact of this meant a dramatically reduced adversarial approach to seeking compensation, and eliminated the 'ambulance chaser' culture in NZ legal practice. An interesting discussion in itself.

@iallso1 Год назад
The down side of ACC is that people take a more relaxed attitude towards their own safety in the knowledge that should an accident occur their wages or at least 80% will be covered as will their medical expenses. If the circumstances of the injury/accident were preventable by the person making the claim then the system should say no, you should have done whatever. I see people out on motorcycles in tee shirts and shorts and know they are the reason my ACC levy on my registration is over $500 per year.

The act that governs splitting up of assets upon breakups of relationships (relationships property act) deals with assets attained during the relationship, and not individual assets that you already have. The act provides that the asset distribution has to be fair and equitable and that domestic contributions have value just as wages and cash does. There are some exceptions and ways of protecting personal assets by laying out who owns what etc. Sort of like a 2 sided prenuptial ( but using a free template you then get notirised etc) You don't just get half of all the assets because you share their life.

Hi Morgan. Thanks for posting. You’re totally right about the exporting of NZ quality produce, overseas. Who does that actually benefit? If NZ is getting good prices for its products overseas, but then those said products are cheaper for locals in that foreign country, then what’s left for Kiwis paying a high local price? Low paying jobs and expensive local prices? I think it’s only a personal gain for the farmer/grower. NZ needs to import quality food, at cheaper prices to make the cost of living better. Not sure if that works in reality as I’m no qualified economist but there has to be a better outcome for people living in NZ 😵‍💫

To add to the confusion the "All Blacks" did get their name from a typo, but then rolled with it. Now the name represents the coloured clothing we wear. A representative New Zealand team first toured the British Isles in 1905. The side is now known as the "Originals", as the "All Blacks" name emerged during this tour when, according to team member Billy Wallace, a London newspaper reported that the New Zealanders played as if they were "all backs".

Agriculture is for now the backbone of the NZ economy and has been for some time, so exporting most of our produce is what keeps the economy going mostly. When NZ food is exported it has to be competitive otherwise no one will buy it and that would be bad for the economy so the exporters sell NZ produce overseas for what they can to stay competitive (cheaper prices) but then they make up for that loss by charging kiwis extra. NZ also currently has a duopoly of Supermarkets, the only two big Supermarket Giants in NZ are Countdown (that also own SuperValue and Fresh Choice) and Foodstuff (that own New World, Pak n save and Four Square). With only two Supermarket chains there is very little competition if any and therefore no competition in lower pricing or bargains which leads to inflated prices. This may be a tiny bit alleviated with Costco now entering the NZ market and the Government having finally realised the perverted nature of the Supermarket duopoly and are currently pushing through regulations to increase Competition on the sector but It will take time for a real difference to present itself. NZ is also a tiny isolated nation at the bottom of the planet away from all the major shipping routes with a tiny population, shipping and trade is more expensive and with our small population and market we aren't a priority amongs't many of the worlds exporters so prices are usaully higher.
