An very important factor you touched upon is Kiwi's being relaxed (laid-back) and not living in fear. Having lived and worked (as a Kiwi) in other countries I can identify with this (as many of the countries were in conflict). We do not have to fear an aggressive neighbouring country with a mutual border, our kids being gunned-down at High-School, being bitten by venomous insects or animals, fear of a melt-down at the nuclear power plant etc etc. Some of this is due to our geography and natural flora and fauna, however most of it is a result of the people and institutions and culture. In the USA (a country that seems to promote fear to keep gun-sales up and to justify an obscene defence budget) I was shocked how fearful people are. People "needing" guns because they are fearful of being unable to "defend themselves", fear of other cultures or religions (i.e. Islam), job insecurity, fear of being sick and being unable to afford the user-pays healthcare, fear of "those guys over there" because they have a different skin colour or drive a certain car or live in a particular "hood" I would be interested, fear of someone who has a different accent, political view...the list goes on. I would be interested to hear your take on what American's fear as opposed to Kiwi's.

There are a lot of comments about rain water. I agree that many houses collect rain water, but it's mostly to have an independent supply in case of a natural disaster. Urban housing is using rain water to wash the car, water the garden etc. We use town supply for drinking, cooking and washing.

I think you will find that in cities and towns water supplies are on mains supply. Even where we live on a rural block we have good quality town supply. Tank water is convenient, if limited, depending on rainfall, but it can carry infection if collected from the roof which birds tend to use as communal toilets. It pays to have your supply checked and if possible treated if used for drinking etc. Some years ago during water shortages some city dwellers had tanks put in, largely as back up for garden use when limits were placed on hose and sprinkler use.

Hi again Morgan, living in Wellington we have a great butchery called Direct Meats. The first time I ever did an online meat delivery from them I incorrectly picked the incorrect Wellington suburb for the delivery charge as the boundary was unclear. I had no idea but they obviously picked it up from our delivery address. Instead of keeping the overpayment, they alerted me to my error and put 500gms of extra bacon in my delivery. Superb customer service!

GMO's - they are not banned outright in NZ. They require MPI approval and MPI has never approved any seed for use for commercially grown crops that will be sold retail in NZ. GMO's are grown in NZ for export and GMO crops from outside NZ are imported and sold retail. Customer Service - is better than the US, but hardly stellar. If you have a difficult problem or just get someone having a bad day then you're screwed, just like in the US. Rainwater. *Most* people in New Zealand do NOT use rainwater collection systems. They are the exception, not the rule. In parts of the country you *couldn't* bury the tanks for rainwater - most of Canterbury, for example, because the water table is too high to put something like that in the ground. Alternative Therapies. None of the ones you mentioned are "alternative". Physiotheraphy is a science. Shit like chiropractic or homeopathy are "alternative" because they are based on no demonstrated science, but if you really want to waste the tax payers money on quackery then you can, sadly. Pennies. Nope. You round to the nearest 10 cents because NZ got rid of the 5 cent coin at the same time it got rid of the 1 cent and 2 cent, as well as the paper $1 and $2, which switched to coins.

@michaelheliotis5279
@michaelheliotis5279 Год назад
New Zealand indeed has wonderful customer service in the public sector, but in the private sector there's a lot left to be desired, which was probably what the American couple was complaining about. In the US, they're used to the opposite, where intense competition and (for hospo at least) tips for wages means that customer service is absolutely stellar, but the public service is notorious for rude and unhelpful staff coupled with long wait times.

@@michaelheliotis5279 NZ (and Aus) Customer Service in the private sector can be very lackluster i agree, but i will take it over the US version. I find American customer service overbearing and suffocating. Let me eat my meal in peace. And that is not even getting into the weird and uncomfortable habit they have of taking your credit card away to swipe it. Let me swipe my own damn card in front of me.
@iatsd
@iatsd Год назад
Public service will generally be good. Private sector can be all over the place in terms of quality. Having lived all over the world, I'm not impressed with most customer service in NZ. It's just sloppy and I'm so sick of the "Maaaaate!" approach to everything as if it excuses bad service.
