Drill and thread the end of the cam and pull it back on

I thought about doing that if hitting it on didn’t work.

A thin film of oil on the cam aids in installation and is noted on cummins quickserv. It makes all the difference. Heat the gear at 400 minimum 1 hour and not to exceed 4 hours.

I read somewhere that putting oil may cause the cam to work it’s way off over time. That would have made it a lot easier. I’ll look into that. I hope I never have to do this job again

thanks for this video - really know what I'm in for now. love your method of getting the cam gear off. do you think there's enough meat in the end of the cam to drill a hole, tap a thread and then use a bolt to pull it on?? did you say the other option was to pull the cam out?!? with hindsight do you reckon that may have been easier?

I did think about tapping the cam as a last resort. I’ve seen some videos of people taping them out. You couldn’t give it a try. There is a section in the service manual that tells you how to remove the cam. It involves removing the rocker arms and using wooden dowels to hold tapets in place so they don’t fall into the old pan. I didn’t want to do all that extra work. It would have taken longer but maybe lest stressful.

@@TheUltimateHandymanKyle thanks heaps for the reply mate 👍👍 I reckon I'll follow the same path you did - pulling the cam out sounds like a lot more stress.... and maybe I'll investigate tapping a hole out if I get stuck 👍👍

@@simple_man_jkb I haven't tried the job yet.. my timing gear casing has a small crack (and leaking oil) which is why I need to get the cam gear off to replace jt... but I'm trying to stop the leak with metal putty first... so far so good 🤞🤞

How do you pull the air compressor gear? Advice would be much appreciated.

I think it’s permanently connected to the compressor. Why do you need to remove that gear?

@@TheUltimateHandymanKyle need to replace a broken stud for the air compressor. It somehow snapped off and weeps engine oil.

Why didn't you put a big socket over the end of the camshaft and use that to drive the gear on?
@TheUltimateHandymanKyle
@TheUltimateHandymanKyle Год назад
I tried something similar to that but couldn’t hit it hard enough. It was taking away to much energy on my hammer blows. You would need a huge socket, that I didn’t have on hand and some one to hold it there for your. I even tried an air hammer with the hammer attachment and that didn’t move it at all. I didn’t put this in my video because I wanted to go straight to the point on what worked. This was a challenging job and stressful. I wish you the best of luck if you do this on your truck. Make sure your hammer is a softer metal than the gear so it doesn’t damage it. I used a brass hammer. At the very end chunks of brass we’re flying off. The gear had no hammer dents or marks on it. Just make sure you hit it around the center. Let me know how it goes.

@The Ultimate Handyman my cam gear came off yesterday. I am working on dropping the oil pan so I can wedge the steel in there like you did. We shall see how it goes! Thanks for the video, I was about to pull the cam all the way out... I really didn't want to do that.
