Shenbakeswarar Temple: A Historical Shiva Temple
Shenbakeswarar Temple is a revered Shiva temple located in Natham Parameswara Mangalam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. Situated just 10 km from Kalpakkam in Lathur Taluk, this temple is entirely constructed from stone. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, known here as Shenbakeswarar, and his consort, Goddess Sountharyanayagi. The temple is approximately 80 km from Chennai.
The temple dates back to the Pallava King Nirupathungan (869-880 AD) and was later extended by the Chozhas, Pandyas, and Vijayanagaras. Inscriptions from the reigns of Kulothunga Chozha-I, Rajendra Chozha-I, Rajaraja-III, Pandyas, Maravarman Sundara Pandyan, and the Vijayanagaras adorn the temple's adhisthana and sanctum walls.
This place was once known as “Nikarili Chozha Chathurvedi Mangalam,” named after Rajaraja-I. His inscriptions reveal that a village council managed the temple, assembling once a year in the “Rajendra Chozha Sathuschali” mandapa. The temple received donations of paddy for poojas and 90 goats for a perpetual lamp.
The temple was initially reconstructed during the Uthama Chozha / Parantaka Chozha period, with a 16-pillared mandapa built during Rajendra Chozha's time. Currently, the temple is undergoing renovation, with scattered Shiva Lingas and Nandhis around the site, known as Panchabootha Lingas representing the five elements.
Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi performed penance in the Shenbaka forest to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. Lord Shiva, instructing Nandhi to guard her, blessed her after the penance. Another story tells of Lord Shiva hiding on a nearby Palar River island, with Nandhi still awaiting his return, facing the Kailasanathar temple.
This east-facing temple features a sanctum housing Shenbakeswarar in lingam form and a Nandhi facing east. The temple also has koshtams with Vinayagar, Pichadanar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, Sankaranarayanan, and Durgai. The mukha mandapam has Ambal facing south, Arumugar on an asura peacock, Brahma Sastha, and Vinayagar.
Despite ongoing renovations, the temple remains a significant place of worship. The sanctum sanctorum includes a sanctum, artha mandapam, maha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam, with new sannadhis for Nalvar, Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Suryan, and Chandran under construction.
