I am a U.S. Citizen of 45 years with a Bachelors degree, served a year in Americorps and work in the trades. When I realized I couldn’t afford to live in Colorado, I went back East. I couldn’t imagine just showing up in a random mountain town, where many are struggling themselves and expect to be showered with necessities. This is beyond what it appears on the surface.

Law enforcement are explicitly told not to check immigration status in most of Colorado. I have since moved away but Carbondale is my home town (family still there) and I can tell you there are already thousands of illegal immigrants that comprise likely over 50% of the local population. The DMV is loaded daily with people who do not even speak English getting driver's licenses. How can these people pass those hard written tests if they do not know or read or speak English. I am in Panama. My California driver's is valid here. He can use his driver's license from whatever country he is from in the states. I can't drive here unless my immigration status is legal. They always ask for my passport to verify that I am in the country legally. That is a big difference.

You can drive in the US with a valid foreign driver’s license from many countries. And anyone can purchase a car with cash here. Problems arise when you try to register it. You need a proof of residency and insurance. It looks like their car had a temporary dealer tag which usually expires within 30 days.

There are so many jobs in Colorado. Basically every retail establishment in Denver is hiring. And they aren’t full of illegals. We have a higher minimum wage here than most places. Every employee I see, every day speaks English. There hasn't been shelter for homeless U.S. Men in Carbondale or Glenwood Springs for the 20 plus years I've been going to Sunlight. The mountains in the Northwest are a hard place to live and work. Resources are expensive and infrastructure hard to maintain. Not a place for tropical people.

Fort Collins has always welcomed homeless people, during Covid they allowed them to camp out in a field by our park. The park got over run for a year with drugs and violence it was a great family atmosphere

The town has to be honest and tell them there are no places to live and if you don't have a home and if you can't clean up properly no one will employ you. They must be told there are no homeless shelters and the town cannot afford to feed them. They also need to be told that there aren't an unlimited number of jobs, maybe 10- 20 seasonal jobs and most are filled by the residents of the town. Honesty is the best policy.
