I particularly was glad to see the "EQUIPMENT" both Large and Small that you are using to work on this Printed Circuit Board with ( the Tweezer Set ) for example and the Type of Soldering / De Soldering Equipment. At 33:05 minutes when you are working on the broken trace, I think I can see another broken trace, on the right, the ones that go horizontal and curve to go vertical, just to the right of your hand, the top one has a mark on it like a cracked trace which has arced or corroded slightly, it might be nothing, but you may want to double check.

Very relaxing to watch you work Buddy. I was a little confused by the schematic around those relays, however. Could not figure out the RX RF flow through those relays on the schematic.
@aaa000777
@aaa000777 7 лет назад
The Relays are there to insert RF attenuation into the receive circuit. One provides 10 db attenuation and the other provides 20 db. If both are activated you get 30 db. The schematic had an error in it where one leg of R3 was not connected to anything.

Thanks for a great video. I just took my -940S out from the storage locker. It had been unused for some 25 years. It seem to have issue with the back up batteries, the meter is not showing voltage, frequency display shows readings but goes off after a a few seconds but returns when u rotate the knob. Reception is next to none... something might have happened when I switched it on for the 1st time. AVR board gives 28,5 V. The USB , LSB buttons do not illuminate. I wish I could find a circuit diagram and board component layouts, but maybe the best would be to get some radio specialist help...

Luckily it didn't get any further than the attenuator resistors. These can be a real pita to repair depending how deep the problem gets as your aware. I have two of these. One that works great and one that has developed a dot display problem until it warms up. Servicing the top boards that are stacked can be a bit of a pain. Hoping it's nothing more than a poor connection since the problem goes away when it warms up. Really need to dig that radio out one of these days and repair it. LOL, ever notice us repair guys always seem to have the most broken radios. Always to busy repairing everyone else's. :-)
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
I will admit these radios are a PITA to start with. They seem so fragile to work on. Always scared you are going to break something. He was lucky on this one. Looks like the arrester took the brunt and saved a lot of parts. I was so surprised that Q10 did not get wiped. It is a FET preamp. Luckly it was installed backwards from the factory. I also know what you mean. I have plenty of broken rigs in need of repair. Just no time. I bet I got 25 emails in the past two weeks wanting me to get back to the 101 series. Customer rigs first......

The Radio Shop I have a ts-940 go slow the volume control and it will come back sometime then the meter will be like S9 noise and then I go down to like S2 but it's intermittent and I thought maybe the volume control was dirty it's weird sometimes I'll push the monitor button and the volume will come up now it's doing it where I turned the attenuation on and the receive gets louder I don't know I may have to check that neon Bob you're talking about but mine is definitely intermittent

Yep, after the video I had to go back and fix it again.
@julianjames4519
@julianjames4519 6 лет назад
In the first test with signal, AGC switch is in OFF position. Then the S meter is not activated, therefore you should not expect the pointer to deviate from input signal. In this situation, the movement of the pointer is subordinate only to RF gain.

19:00......HEY,I DIDN'T COME HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER!!!!!Seriously tho,last couple of days I've been watching some of your Kenwood vids as I was considering a 480 or 940 as my first Ham rig,as both are for sale here on CL,and I wanted a feel as to what some problems they have being they are fairly old now,and after watching both you and MikesRadioRepair,you BOTH have gained new subs,Great job to you both for taking time to video,share,and EXPLAIN what you are doing.My only regret is that your #18 video was supposed to be a Part 1,and I never saw a Part 2? ;-(
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 6 лет назад
Thanks Kirk for the nice comment. The 480 is a very nice reliable radio. The 930/940 is a great radio when they are working. Kenwood created a lot of failure points in this rig with connectors and PLL issues. Google 940 pll problems and you will see what I mean. I never did a part 2 of video 18 because once I started working on this radio I found more problems that one would want. Not only are the PLL's dead but both final amplifiers are toast. Transistors and support components. Hope one day to find another one and use parts from that one to make a good one. Thanks again for watching.

O was recaping the PLL unit and got the same exact issue resolved the PLL for IC8 by removing the wax and resoldering but still the same and noticed that I am missing 5V on Carier board. Having issues tracing the wire it might be that something else was disconnected or getting pulled to gnd. Was there any update on this I see it hass been a long while back.

Not that it would have affected the repair, I was curious at 2:00 it shows 1KHz @ 1KHz deviation. That seems like awfully low modulation. I would have thought it should be 4 KHz deviation. It served the purpose but curiosity got the best of me :) Love your videos.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Yep, It amazes me that folks like yourself can spot the little things. :) I was keeping the tone a bit low because it was the signal I was interested in, the tone was just for a marker. With only 60% hearing in one ear I can tell more about what is going on in the transmitter by concentrating on the carrier. Now if this would had been a by the book alignment then everything would be set according. Thanks for paying attention.

I've got the same trouble with the Kenwood TS-940, where the ATT -20 position is the same as the zero position, where it should be between the -10 and -30 attenuation. I haven't opened the bottom of the radio yet. The TS-940 also has many other problems. The frequency was unstable. CW sounded chirpy on CW and SSB was garbled. Cleaning the molex connectors on the PLL board fixed most of the chirpy CW, but I still heard the chirp one time after cleaning the connecters with deoxIT. Maybe the PLL and Career boards need to be re-soldered. What's your source for the relays? I think it would be a good idea to replace them. I also have intermittent display problems with the alternating digits and dots. Most of the time that problem doesn't occur. Maybe cleaning more molex connections and re-soldering the boards will fix the intermittent problems. The radio wasn't used for about 20 years. Your videos are very helpful! I've thought about junking my TS-940, but maybe it can be repaired. KY0L.

The Radio Shop I believe I have dirty relays and some bad caps . . I can put on say 3553 kHz on vfo A and then put on 820 kHz on VFO B and flip between the VFO s . This seems to snap the relays on and off and my imagining is that it is cutting through some of the carbon build up. Cuz the signals gets better and I can pull in most am stations for a while .I would switch to solid state relays if I could . The VFOs seem on track- I compared the frequencies with my Grundig satellit and they match up dead on..,

Yes you are correct. Good eye. After the testing is done I did a proper repair of the trace. I do not use wire to fix traces on high end radios. I cut copper traces and attach to the board. Then I apply over coat to the exposed trace. Now nothing at all wrong with using wire to repair a trace.

@danluzurriaga6035

@@TheRadioShop That is not a fuse circuit, as Jack says, it is a gas discharge device to protect against overvoltage at the antenna input, correct? A fuse is a short circuit but the bulb is an open circuit. But interesting: they just use a common neon gas bulb and not some special device. Looks like it didn't protect those two resistors lol.

No offense, but I have been taught to repair the track by soldering a copper wire. Using only solder will not last that long.

No offence taken. You have been taught correct. However I do not use just plain solder. I use silver solder. The trace will break before the silver solder does. But in all honesty the correct way is to replace the trace as I have shown in other videos. Thanks for your comment.

I agree. That's how I would do it, with some 24-26awg. It's not as elegant looking but very reliable. Everybody has there own way of doing things. Silver solder (95/5) is pretty darn rugged.

Buddy: the PCB repair was not the best. Review the video you can see the pad move when you checked after soldering. IMHO this is a spot for later problems. I would have added a piece of wire. The fundamental problem is likely that the PCB is fragile to rework. Use of the Pace tool is important - but still damage can happen, especially with the older PCB technology. They are notably fragile. 73
