It wasn’t solely a Protestant vs Catholic war. There were Catholics on the Protestant side and Protestants on the Catholic side. It was about politics. King Billy actually supported freedom of religion. The Netherlands (King Billy) helped their Protestant neighbour because their more powerful neighbours who happened to be Catholic would have taken them out.
