Easily the best thought out battery box on the market and plan on ordering one as soon as my canopy arrives. I would like to see an expandable battery option so you can run a bigger AC inverter, but thats not a deal breaker for me.
Battery box is well thought out and the wiring looks heavy duty and of course the cost of the product does show you are getting what your paying for . Great video and well done mate 👍🍻
Awesome video mate, so impressed with Kickass gear, so much so I just ordered this battery box including the battery and the rest of gear for my dual battery set up, now I am excited 😆
Nice mate. I couldn't find a battery box on todays market that suits me. I ended making my own. This would be the best on the market. Great review mate. I dropped 13kg going to lithium. Love it. 🇦🇺❤️🍺👍
Yeah I found the same thing. Everyone made the same crappy battery box & only change minor things. They really went back to the drawing board and redesigned it 👍
Great vid man! Can you tell me what lights should be on when it’s in off position and plugged in to the car connection with ignition off? I have all the top lights flashing and #1 orange & #4 green? I can’t find out if there’s something wrong or if this is normal?
The top row of lights is showing what type of battery the charger has detected. If you switch the battery box if the charger continues to look for the battery type but the power has been disconnected so it will just flash on the top row until you turn it on again. You don't need to turn it off though if nothing is plugged in & draining the battery just leave it on like I do. The side lights indicate where the charge is coming from and the bottom row of lights show what stage the charger level is on depending on how discharged the battery is
I hope the mppt charger can handle a greater wattage input than the agm battery box was. I had to downgrade my solar panel to prevent wattage overload errors.
Thank you for this review. I have AGM & Kings Box atm. Looking to convert to Lithium this year. Does this only display voltage (AGM) or does it display SOC in % of Full amperage also? Or will I have to get another monitor for Lithium?
Thank mate, great stuff. I was getting sick of taking the lid off to recharge the battery. Also, how do you tell the difference between the old and new boxes?
I just got one unit, really good! Thanks for the video mate. Just thinking to add a fixed solar panel on the top of my car but not sure which is suitable for this lithium item (Amps, Watts…) help please! Thank you mate.
I wonder why Kickass say their battery box will only work with their Lithium battery. Seems like bullshit to me. Anyway, they refuse to sell the box alone.
Hi again Paul just thought of a question, you mentioned it would be possible to plug into the box a 240v inverter. Do you mean into the large Anderson plug ? Would it handle a 2000w model. Thanks mate.
@@Campingdownunder Hi Paul I had a look at Australia Direct website for the power station, it says that from the 175amp anderson plug, it will safety give a maximum of 100amp discharge. Allowing you to use up to 1200w inverter.
does bms allow the battery to charge while battery power is being used? i read a review that said if your travel oven is on while your driving to a campsite, the bms will not allow you to charge the batter at the same time, that seems abit silly
@@Campingdownunder I could be wrong but there may be a spec for total input + output combined loads. The oven drawing a ton of power may push the limits of the box over the edge when combined with a high input at the same time. Might be a limitation of the battery but don't quote me on that.
If you have an ignition trigger wire in your 12 pin then that's completely fine. The blue ignition trigger wire doesn't draw much current so it's not going to affect your existing wiring or fusing on the 12 pin
@@Campingdownunder Cool... thanks mate. I am also on the hunt for some Lithium batteries. Just yesterday, the sparky who came to service my AirCon was telling me he has the KA battery like yours and had no issues, so I may get a couple myself after my 2 agm's kick the bucket lol. Not far to go now... its been 4 years.
In my 4wd I run 2 x 100ah slimline itechworld lithium batteries & they've been great 👍 I've got a discount code for them aswell if you'd like to check them out aswell (Campingdownunder)
Hi Paul, you said you can use the high power Anderson plug to jump start a car, what extra parts do you need for that? is there something KickAss sells?
Hi Paul, do you have the issue of when the battery is at 100% charged by the alternator that the battery station box begins to beep saying overcharge detection (BMS).. I have wired mine in all correctly and the ignition wire is connected to the heated seats fuse as my ute does not have heated seats..
@@Campingdownunder yes, is only on when all dash lights are on to to start the ute, and fuse is also off when on accessories.. I tested this with a test light.
If you've connected the positive & both negatives to the lithium battery, positive & negatives to the main battery and ignition trigger wire then there must be an issue. You'll have to contact Kickass and they will be able to sort you out 👍 I haven't heard of that happening before
does it have a solar regulator, and what is the maximum solar in put before damaging that 120 amp battery. I have 2000 watts of 12 volt solar on my boat, so what would be to much I would think. also I would fit a 140 amp giant lithium, unless kickass makes a similar size.
The solar regulator can handle a maximum of 25amps. Yes if you can find a bigger battery that fits in the box it will be fine. But you'll lose the display function as the display plugs directly into the battery and other batteries won't have the plug needed. For just an extra 20 amp's I wouldn't bother
@@Campingdownunder thanks for your prompt reply, I guess its more for taking ashore for base camp. to run fridge and lights. i do plan to replace my 6 agm 120 amps with 3 giant 140 lithium as they have a 150 amp 300 surge output just a bit scared one bms group might try to supply more then another when powering 1800 watt air fryer. the 340 giant has 200 and 400 surge but if it shits itself your a long way from home and up shits creek without a paddle, the 140 has dual bms so should be a better bet. does kick ass batteries have dual bms they sound pretty dam fine.
If your planning on running that much I honestly don't believe the Kickass power station would be right for you. It's really only designed for light use
Yeah you just won't be able to use the battery monitoring features. The screen really is worth it rather than just a volt meter that comes with the agm box
Not that I'm aware of. But if you need more than 120ah of lithium then I'd suggest you need a custom 12v system made up. Unless you intend to run a lot of induction cookers, coffee machines & microwaves then 120ah is all the average person needs for their setup. Rather than having multiple batteries it's sometimes best to look into solar to keep you going when your pulled up somewhere for more than a few days since the alternator won't be charging the battery because your not moving
I agree with you but the target audience for this battery box isn't someone that already has a full 12v setup installed in their car. They would already have permanent solar panels mounted on the car which makes sense to use the redarc charger. But this battery box is for people without a 12v setup meaning they don't already have a mounted solar panel & most likely only use a fold out panel if they are camping for several days making the green power priority useless because the car isn't running while you are camping 👍
Most people only need a 100W inverter, to the charge laptop, drone and camera batteries, so, why isnt it built in ? I have a small liFe power station that has 120W - usb fast chargers, 2 lights, for 1/6th the cost. Sure, it has tiny capacity... but, the point is, at the very budget end of the market ($300) they can throw in a (square wave) inverter, why cant a $2k unit have one ? Btw, square wave inverters are fine for 'sensitive electronics' (Technical speciallist, electronics here). The very first thing your laptop or drone batterry charger does with the ac mains, is to convert it (rectify) to from 240v ac to 360v dc, and smooth the remenant ac ripple. The input circuitry does not particulary care about the shape of the wave (as long as the peak voltage is not too high), as it is all smoothed out b4 the next stage - the switching stage, that literally chops that dc up and pulses a small isolation transformer. The now ac out of the tranformer at this stage is then rectified to dc, and filtered for the final output. This is why your laptop charger is rated for 90v to 250v, and 50 or 60hz input - the charger does not care. Pretty much all 'sensitive electronics' input power stages are built this way. I have no problem charging my $2k laptop from a cheap inverter for that reason. Counter intuitively, it is the simple low tech devices that use induction motors that will run hotter with a quare wave. However, if you are powering a fan, dont worry, the fan is self cooling.
Not many people camping need to charge laptops like I do. Most people are happy to just be able to charge their phone and run their fridge for the entire time they are camping. This is designed for people that don't go camping every weekend or travel full time touring. This is aimed at a particular market. I have done reviews on power stations in the past with a built-in 2000w inverter
@@Campingdownunder thanks mate - i kinda liked the kickass idea with there fridge slide and fridge etc and easy install with all the same brand - new it was to easy to be true - cheers
I actually tried to buy a cigarette socket charger for my laptop when I bought it but was told they didn't make them for my particular laptop. Plus I use it to quickly charge my drone batteries as well
Haha yeah I was very lucky the name was available when I first created camping downunder on instagram. I was very surprised the name was available. Thank you I try and make all my videos easy enough for everyone to understand 👍
@TOMVUTHEPIMP you obviously know nothing about lithium batteries 🤣 I no longer collaborate with Kickass but this is a good value battery box. Do some research on what you actually get. It's not just a plastic box
Looks awesome, but I would never buy this or any other kickass product. They have the worst customer service of any company, actually, they don’t have customer service. For a technical product like this, you need customer service which they don’t have
Sorry to hear you've had a negative experience mate. I myself have never heard anything like this from anyone else. But I'll make them aware of your comment 👍
@@Campingdownunder I’m sure they know mate, plenty of online reviews about it. I lodged 2 requests online for their help on a compressor, their great customer service seems to be ignore the problems and they go away
It's a portable power station. Not a decked out 12v system. They can't fit 5k of 12v systems into 1 little box. Can't have everything. If you need an inverter then you really have no need for a portable power station. You'd be better off mounting a full time 12v system in your car. It's not designed to run microwaves & induction cookers. It's designed to take camping
@@Campingdownunder can I run my engel 60L fridge for 3days with this? Charge cellphonr and maybe a kings light strip for awning at night? I do camping once every 2 months only though.
Your fridge will only use on average between 1-2 amps per hour & the battery capacity is 120ah so it will definitely run all that. You can also better protect yourself by teaming it up with a solar panel or solar blanket so you can stay even longer without stressing about power 👍
If this is more than $100 US (so $130-$150 AUD??) then this is a ripoff. You can get a box off Aliexpress for $50 and all the connectors for $20 and the DC sockets are another $20. Edit: Holy shit this comes standard with the wiring for a dual battery setup and the charger on top. Changed my mind this is worth $200 US and actually is a well done piece of kit. I thought it was a box with some DC sockets
@@Campingdownunder that sucks, no one in their right mind wants a commercial premade battery unless its a PowerQueen or something similar Edit: looks like just the box and all the accessories is $300 USD which is where I expected it to be. Figure they are making a solid $100 on it, probably more when buying all the parts in large qty. If I had to offer them any constructive criticism it would be A. Do a model with XT90/XT60 and do a model with anderson PowerPoles. Maybe not the Power Poles since that kind of overlaps with the original product but I think XT90's and 60's are so standard throughout the world that it would make sense. B. Ditch the dinosaur USB A plugs for USB C. You can do a USB A + USB C socket that is QC3.0 on the A port and 20W PD on the C port. They even make sockets now that do 60W or 65W USB PD and they're only $17. Its a USB A QC3.0 plus a USB C PD 65W and I think you can use both at the same time because it claims to rated for 83 watts which would be 65 on the C and 18 on the A? Can be found cheaper on Ali. 65W is enough to charge most USB C laptops as well. If you're doing video editing on your macbook that might be the only time you are slowly draining the battery with it plugged in. www.amazon.com/65W-12V-USB-Outlet-Laptop/dp/B09YTWNCM2
You can not build this unit for the price you are saying. They use quality components not cheap parts from ebay. Australia uses mostly Anderson plugs & standard usb. Usb c is slowly rolling out but most devices you buy here still come with a standard usb port so no need to remove the most used ports. This is built for Australian use. Not USA. It meets our needs very well. The only thing it's missing is a built in inverter
@@Campingdownunder they’re sold in the US too. I’ll put together a quick parts list to build a comparable box minus the display. I think a BMS with Bluetooth is less likely to have issue even though it is a really clean looking screen
Everyone says this. Sorry but I can't help it. I've spoken like this my entire life and it's not something I can fix. It's hard enough for me to even make these videos but I do my best
