13 Assassins (2010): An Action Movie Masterpiece

Takashi Miike's, 13 Assassins has what many action pictures need, a villain who transcends evil. And 13 brave warriors stepping teaming up to put an end to evil, even at the cost of their own lives. Their heroism against impossible odds is a last hurrah for the samurai code; the film is set in 1844, toward the end of the Edo period, when true samurai warriors were growing rare.

One of the thing's I love about this movie is how it deals with the hypocrisy of the Bushido code. Under the code both sides are actually in the right and wrong at the same time. Hanbei and his Akashi samurai are bound to protect their lord no matter what, to the death. Shinzaemon and his assassins are also acting under the code of Bushido cause they have been given orders by Sir Doi Toshitsura. But unlike Hanbei, Shinzaemon is prepared to transcend the Bushido code and see his duty as to what is best for the country as a whole instead of just one lord. Hanbei knows that the right thing to do is stop Naritsugu, but he is not willing to transcend the code in order to do so himself. Because of their actions both men know that under the code, they are going to Hell. A fact that they both acknowledge in their final battle when they tell each other they will seen each other there

What fascinates me is how the actors use their eyes to struck fear in the hearts of the enemies.

The realism of that final duel and Yakusho Koji, who plays the main protagonist, his line before he kills his counterpart on the other side is awesome. It's the base reality of the world. This film is really great because it's visceral and the effects were all invisible. Great review!

Koyata has blood worms in him which make him immortal. Thats why he was left hanging in the forest because the bandit clan he was with couldn't kill him. So they left him up there to starve. This is also why he survies every attack on him.

Miiiiiike! Love his flicks :) Audition, Gozu, Rainy Dog, 13 Assassins, Happiness of The Katakuris and Izo are probably my personal favorites :) I love how 13 Assassins has a slow burn to start and EARNS all the crazy fighting for the last 30-45 mins. I own over 40 DVD's of Miike's and have seen over 70 of his movies, he is am amazing Director.

I'm a big fan of his films too! No one can pull off his twisted humor. Most people unfairly label his films as just shock, but his films have such range.

@@bushidoblues9302 haha, you are 100% right about his twister humor, underrated part of his total package. I hate when people think he is just about violence and that's it. If you watch most of his movies you will see such a wide variety of styles, from Horror to Yakuza, to Kids movies, to action movies, to dramas, to mixed of humor and musical, etc.. Super talented dude!

Well done. Great Review that conveys the basic segments of this Japanese Masterpiece. Where have the Men and Women gone; those who‘s sworn duty is to protect what is Noble, Truthful, Selfless, and Altruistic in a true Civilization? They, some of them at least, Observe from Above; amongst the Stars.

Koyata interpreted as a yokai of some description makes the most sense, as well as adding depth to the story. He cannot be a tengu, however, as according to legend, the tengu taught Minamoto no Yoshitune to fight with war fans and swords, yet Koyata only fights with rocks and sticks, never touching a bladed weapon.

My biggest gripe with this movie was the bit where one of the samurai blows himself and a trapped Akashi samurai up where there’s apparently zero viscera and about 200 gallons of blood in them lmao, making a shower of blood on the neighboring house.

The bad guy is nasty but the whole purpose for the assassination of him is to hide a scandal instead of saving Japan from evil. The samurai did the mission because they were bored with their lives and some of them even did it for money. In the original movie it was pretty clear that the two groups are equally bad and full of s...t and at the end the only thing you'll get is madness, that's the reason why Kudo used similar camera shots for the beginning of the movie when a character killed himself and at the end when a crazy guy is walking alone on the rice's fields. The deaths of the samurai in the original were not heroic, far from it. In this Miike tried to make the whole thing closer to Seven Samurai when the point of the original was quite different. When I first watched the original movie I thought Eiichi Kudo was only copying a successful movie until I watched it again and realized that he used the same template to put the whole thing on his head.

I love this movie. It't damn near perfect. But in my opinion, the cinematography and direction is excellent, the fighting magnificent, music and dialogue stop it from being perfection. They are great, just a notch behind perfection. What I especially don't like is the music when the lord kills the child and family in the banquet hall. It just takes you out of the gravity of that scene.

I liked this commentary however, if you do further research on Japan, you’ll understand why we dropped two bombs. Had we dropped a third one would be a very different world today. But do your research on Japan my son was the one that told me about it was pretty shocked and I’ve seen some other things about it. Research on Japan. And this is my favorite movie. I recommend this to anybody who is really pissed off about politics. Watch it for four years. It may make a difference. One thing I haven’t seen in the clips of this movie on RU-vid is there not showing the blood going over the roof of the buildings. Guess it’s to much. Best blood 🩸 bath movie 🍿 awesome fights 👍🏽❤️‍🔥

If only a live-action Batman film writer would pay attention to this and the live-action Rurouni Kenshin films. But they won't because they are willingly ignorant in their stagnation of Batman as a character.
