I can't even begin to fathom how difficult that fight scene must have been to choreograph, film and edit together must have been. Incredible how they managed to make a near hour long battle scene both interesting and intriguing without it getting dull or boring.
Lol the hunter or mountain man as you call him is a Yōkai who are a class of supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore. If you can find the uncut version of the movie it show a little more with his character.
There are samurai movies that are "must watch" for fans of the genre. There are many greats, but two of them stand head and shoulders above the rest - The Seven Samurai and Harakiri (1962). No other samurai movies were as important both inside and outside Japan.
8:39 Ryo is gold coins, their currency at the time, and 200 is no small amount. probably 5yrs wages for the average farmer, or blacksmith back then. i've watched "Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsmen" both the TV series, and many films. they started in 1965, all the way to 1989. that was usually the bounty amount they would put on Zatoichi's head. that's another film series you should check out, there's a 2004 remake that is really well done. this was an amazing film! one of my favs as well. glad you got a chance to see it! 👍
