Whats up Gays and Gals!? Welcome or welcome back to my channel! Today I am doing another donation reaction and this movie was an absolute blast to watch. It's been quite awhile since I have seen a good karate movie and watching this reminded me why I do enjoy them. The ending left in me in suspense and I was not expecting something different. You will see how much fun I had in my reaction.

The bandit who fought with the rocks at the end who survives was actually a type of Oni. Basically a Japanese "demon" or spirit but not necessarily evil. Him talking about living in the forest and that scene where it shows his girlfriend bloody in the forest eating "something" hints at that.

Since he mentions 'do you think I'm a racoon', I figured he was a tanuki (a racoon-dog, odd animal native to Japan). In mythology they can shape-shift into human form and are known for being really over-sexed, which is part of the uncut version of the movie. He ends up wearing out an entire brothel and then assaulting the pimp.

The forest hunter many theories are out there, as others pointed out he could be a Onryõ vengeful spirit, or Kitsune possessed by a fox to bring balance back, and even a theory that he is the yin/yang part of one of the 12 and that is why he did not die from the sword to the neck and this was a form of having that one former samurai find a purpose for him and his wife now that old life was done.

For the samurai it was considered a great honor to die in battle. Retiring and dying of old age was sort of embarrassing. This is why the guy was so excited to get this assignment. It was one last chance to die in battle and why he let the guy stab him in the end.

31:25 i've seen this in a few Samurai films, they let the enemy stab them to get the close as possible, so they can do major damage to the enemy as well. he's been battling hundreds of men, and wants this fight to be over soon, so instead of dueling and making himself more tired, he'll take the stab. i think John Wick did this as well at the end of the 1st film.

Eiichi Kudo's original film is a gem of classic japanese cinema, but this remake of the prolific Takashi Miike breathes classicism and spirit of adventure from beginning to end. 100% pure cinema and emotion, without fantasy tricks or excess of digital effects, cinema that raises your blood pressure and takes your breath away. A worthy remake at the height of the classics.

Seppuku or ritualistic disembowelment and beheading is done to remove any dishonor. Being defeated is dishonorable. Making a controversial move can also be viewed as dishonorable. The men that committed Seppuku in this film were openly defying a Lord. They had good reasons to do so but that doesn't matter. Samurai means to serve and it is not their place to question or disobey even when they have great cause to do so. Seppuku at the very least proves one's sincerity beyond any doubt.
@dawest767
@dawest767 2 года назад
In these cases it wasn't to avoid dishonor. In the first case it was a form of protest against the behavior of Naritsugu. In the second case on the bridge it was to take personal responsibility for preventing the passage of Naritsugu, so that his family and clan wouldn't be held responsible. And the result was that Naritsugu was forced to pass through Ochiai.

I'm glad you're reacting to this movie but sad to hear it didn't do well in the poll. I believe more people should watch it. I certainly believe more people should watch "13 Assassins" than much of the cinematic pablum I see every reaction channel watching. Interesting story about the Japanese principle that you're obliged to be loyal regardless: In WW2, the Prime Minister of Japan made a surprising announcement addressed to Japanese-Americans saying that America was their country now and that they were therefore honor bound to be loyal to America. Contrast that to Germany which told German-Americans to "return to the Fatherland" and fight for Germany. Different beliefs about what loyalty demands of a person.
@ForgottenHonor0

The time period this takes place in is the twilight of the Tokugawa Shogunate. For the past two centuries, the Tokugawas have ruled Japan uncontested with absolute authority and enforcing a strict isolationist policy. When Commodore Perry arrived from America and forced Japan to reopen their borders at the end of a cannon it opened the floodgates of enmity numerous Daimyo held for the Shogunate, for both their policies and simmering anger over their takeover at the end of the Sengoku Period. Within years, Japan was once again forced into civil war between the Tokugawa Loyalists and the Imperial Patriots who sought to abolish the rule of the Shogun and restore power to the emperor. In the Last Samurai, we see an aftermath of this war which resulted in a Patriot victory. Another series of movies I highly recommend you watch are the live-action Rurouni Kenshin films which take place in the same period, they are sheer perfection!

So glad you did this review. Have seen this movie countless times. To answer the question you had. 1. Shinza allowed himselfnto be stabbed so he could die on the battlefield with his men like a true samurai. Not to mention he would have been killed for the assassination of the Shoguns brother. 2. On a side note, Kiga the mountain man is thought to be a spirit of sorts. That's why he didn't die. He is the exact opposite of Shinrokuro (shinzas nephew). That's why they only conversed with each other. There is a deleted scene when the mountain man is in the whore house and basically plows through 10 whores and they are just laying there out of energy. He is meant to represent everything shinrokuro wants to be outside a samurai.

To answer your question, Shinzaemon let the lordling stab him because either way, he was going to kill him. But taking that stab also let HIM die, which is what he wanted. He didn't want to live on after this, there's no life for a Samurai of the old way in Japan by this point. This way he goes out in a blaze of glory.

Oh damn! One of my favourite movies. Badass sword fighting action and samurai honor drama. Maybe Takashi Miike's best film. @Mellowcanuck33
@Mellowcanuck33 2 года назад
If you want to see something very cool? Check out Zatoichi, the blind swordsman. The early stuff. 1960s version. Samurai serve. There is always someone higher until you reach the emperor. They follow their orders without question to do so would mean big shame in Japanese culture, no matter what the orders. The point of the suicide on the bridge was to force the Lord to take a certain route. (Knowing where your enemy will be.) The guy who blocked the lord was the ruler of the lands but he did so against the wishes of the Lord he serves, because the bad lord killed his son. Refusing his lords orders was permitted. But the shame of refusing those orders demanded he commit suicide. And I THINK the level of honor dropped on a properly performed suicide was like chiseling it in stone. So even though he disobeyed his lord by refusing him passage, performing the suicide was to smooth any shame. If HIS Lord had gone against the wishes of the suicide??? That's bad medicine.

Watch "Requiem for a dream". But do it on a night you can get drunk after, you're gonna need a couple of stiff ones after.
