Completely agree. Children have no idea what is important in life. So they imitate what they see in others: family, friends, on the TV, etc. If you want your kids to be readers you gotta let them see you reading. Not just books but magazines and newspapers too.

Regarding the hot take of parents being responsible for children not reading: My Mom & Dad had 11 children. My mother didn't work (someone had to stay home to raise ELEVEN children, LOL), and my father at times worked up to 4 jobs. And yet my mother was always reading to her children, reading herself, bringing us to the library (we went every other Saturday since I could remember). At Christmas we were often gifted with books, and they were some of my favorite gifts (literally - I remember the amazing Christmas "Santa" brought me a new bike, but otherwise, I remember the books I received as gifts). We had no money, yet my mother and father would find a way to buy us a subscription to Cricket, a phenomenal children's literary magazine, and my mother also bought subscriptions for me and my brother to a comic book of our choice (mine, of course, was Spider-Man). My father was never a big reader, but he supported my mother and he supported his children. Kids learn from their parents, and when one or both parents read to their children from day one, love reading themselves, and encourage their children to find new worlds and adventures at the library and at book store, children will most likely become avid readers themselves.

It’s true about parents who don’t read but expect their kids to read. I grew up in a household full of books and my mum was a writer as well so that helped a lot. But I don’t want to blame it all on parents who don’t read. It’s also about the kid’s social circle. My good friends in school were all into reading (and surprisingly their parents were not actually avid readers) and that actually made me even more eager to read and share books with them. Same goes with kids who are into sports because all of their mates are. But I agree that the love for reading usually starts at home.

@douglasdea637
@douglasdea637 9 месяцев назад
Yeah... but... ugh, what a Marty-Stu. I remember that contest he is in, for the first time! And his instrument breaks midway through and he doesn't falter for a moment and still brings everyone in the room to tears. Oh come on! My eyes are still rolling at that one. Kvothe goes to school and takes more classes than the other students then finishes all his course work half way through the semester then goes on to teach the teachers. All the while making money by building new devices, practicing his music, hanging out with friends... Uh, huh. You go to college, take 7 courses in a semester and complete all the reading and course work before the half way mark while working a full time job (or even part time.) I dare you.

I used to disagree with Brian Lee Durfree, I gave books out all the time. But you have enough books disappear into the ether and you realise the only people you should let borrow books are people that literally live with you, or someone super close and trustworthy like a close relative. I care less about spine snapping etc than Brian though, its the total lose of a good book I care more about, like my Mum may snap spines like she's a Mortal Kombat character doing a fatality, but at least she gives the books back and I respect that.

My hot take : it's ok to read a translated version. For years, I read fantasy in English. But because anything is possible in fantasy, I questioned myself. Did I understand correctly what was happening? Those flying pigs with leasers eyes aiming at baby chickens? Is that what the author wrote, or am I missing something that completely changed the meaning? Reading in another language will improve your skills in that language, but it will also mess up your own language. Not just the vocabulary but also your grammar. You have to find a balance in the number of books you read in each language. Sometimes, the translation is an improvement. Robert Jordan is known for referring to women's breasts when describing them (the women, not the breasts). I'm now reading a new translation in French of The Wheel Of Time, and they skimmed on the boobs stuff. If I had read the original version, I might have DNF it because of that. I like translations because sometimes I feel lazy. I love your channel! Keep up the great work!

@@andreww4751 I would recommend you download a copy of Grimdark magazine and see who the new writers in there you like. I wouldn't say they make your fave authors look weak, but they can be more weird and extreme (if not better written). Michael R Fletcher would be a good example of an indie Fantasy author hyped up for being "too hardcore for the mainstream".

Who will go to RU-vid and search for an indie book? Few. A RU-vid channel talking about indie books will have an extremely difficult time growing subs, or a popular channel not losing subscribers. I’ve picked up a few indie books. I hated them. A few I could spot the AI in them 1/2 way through the first chapter.
@greblaksnew
@greblaksnew 9 месяцев назад
I'm glad this certainly was a hot take! I agree it's very sad that low effort folks have hijacked indie publishing. They are only hurting honest, hard-working writers. I think Amazon did a good thing for once by forcing an upload limit. I think it's 3 books per day now. I wish they would go a step further and limit it to one novel per month, and maybe they can figure something out for short stories and novellas. People who are real human writers are for sure not writing more than a book a month. (my book took me 5 years). I for one believe that in the front matter a pledge of human creation is necessary in our day and age: "A.I. was not used in the creation of this story. Thank you for supporting human, self-published authors." It's rough out there for us. I don't believe in structural edits for philosophical reasons, but a copy edit for a substantial book is easily $4000, and a proof read is nearly $1000. Add a book cover and formatting and your looking at $5000 to $7000 on top of the time cost of writing. But if writing is your passion, you do it regardless. Keep reading everyone! @@CurieBohr

I would say none of these are spicy but logically understandings that people who make a living from reading books have come to. Like people should read period. As in if they take a whole year to read one book then don't poop all over them for it. If they want to read trash then ask them how fun was that trashy book was and then laugh. Leave ego at the door because it will prevent you from finding books that you might enjoy. Please don't read books just for cred, that's just weird in the grand scheme of things. Let your kid read what they find cool. Ultimately there's no such thing as rules or guidelines to reading books because if everyone remembers how they came across books growing up as kids, it was pure curiosity that ruled over everything.

Counterpoint to BLD: so few of my irl friends and family enjoy reading that I don't care if they trash or fail to return one of my books - I'm just happy they want to share in my hobby and I'll do everything in my power to encourage that. Plus reading was a struggle for me as I had to learn a different way from my peers on how to read, so as I child it was my Parents encouragement that I could learn how to read, that everyone struggles with something and that my brain just worked a little different than others and my reading specialist Mrs Ford that made the biggest impact on my reading. Not cause they read but because they encouraged me.

On Tori Morrows point I thinks she's having a classic case of listening to much to the hype and getting to many expectations. I did the same thing with Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zayn every single person was universally praising it as one of the greatest books in Star Wars history and for me it was just ok it was well wrote and very fun but not as amazing as the hype made it out to be I much prefer Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn. It's what I'm avoiding with Iron Gold because I've seen several different opinions I stopped after about 2 for each side and told myself I'll read it and formulate my own opinion so far through around 100 pages of it I'm seeing where some gripes are coming from tbh especially with Darrow I don't like what 10 years has done to my messy but heroic badass.

Oh man what an awesome wish for authors to be more open about books and other authors they didn’t like and why-I’m so missing that in my life!

I really enjoyed Name of the Wind, but even I feel that it is a bit overrated. It was a fun story, beautifully written, and Kvothe got himself into one huge bumble after another, but by no means is this the "most important book of the decade "... so yea, I think the hype is killing the experience for some folks.

I (austin) have yet to read and have been hearing bad things in general, maybe that will cause me to like it more having these low expectations?

Wildly disagree Swanshawn. Even the examples he brought up are literally original stories, snow piercer is a very original concept. The similarities he's bringing are just interesting reachs, not what the story is.

Name of the Wind doesn't even have a proper story. It shouldn't have to be a hot take not to like it. The prose is way over rated too.

My hottest take: Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is a poor series. I would rate it at 2/5 stars. It's weak, meandering, nonsensical with an inconsistent main character and the story doesn't go anywhere. I spent years hearing about how awesome it was and it just wasn't. A few interesting ideas in there but only that.
@mutate34
@mutate34 9 месяцев назад
I read it years ago and thought it was amazing, but it is a relic of a different time, when series like Gormenghast, Lord Dunsany, etc were very influential and fantasy writing was perceived more as poetic art than a "good story". Wouldn't argue with anyone who thought the gender stuff/politics were gross either.
@douglasdea637

@@mutate34 One time at a convention I picked up a list of "The best fantasy books." One of them was Silverlocke by Myers Myers. I read it and also found it lacking. It's very random and meandering and lacking in story. So yes, I can see what you're saying, there was a time when story mattered less and Book of the new Sun is a part of that. (And yes, the rape scene in book 2 is... problematic.)

My hottest take is nuclear, I think the magic system in LoTR and the how powerful people like Gandalf are is really overrated. Like it always feels like those no real consequences. Idk I respect it and think it’s great for what it’s inspired but I just can’t get on with it.
