In this episode we look closely at a "restored" tube radio bought online and see that there is much more to do in order to safely listen to the set. I believe this is an Emerson model EC-336 (schematic: www.nostalgiaair.org/pagesbymo..., which would date the set to the 1940s. We see immediately that the power cord is not wired safely (see the previous episode on isolation and the AA5 design, • #4: The "All American ... ), that not all the capacitors have been replaced, that no resistors are modern, and that there is extensive rubber rot in the wiring. Part 1 of a series.

I found this video tonight, because I just pulled apart an old Emerson radio (identical to this one) that was in my wife's family. The guy made notes on the back panel that he restored it in 2001, but its got very low signal. Quite a few of the caps/resistors were replaced underneath it, but much of the wiring and the speaker are original. It looks like some of the tubes were likely replaced as well. I was just about to try to get an external antenna for it, but it still has the original wax one there (that this guy replaced) but I don't know how to go about finding that?

I just bought one off of ebay and it's a hack job.I need to get a schematic for it and Nostalgia Air doesn't have a schematic for it.I need one for it.From what research I've done,it dates from 1942 according to Beitman.I've got it downloaded onto my laptop.

So will these types of radios not store electricity in them if you plug it in to test it before working on it? I'm restoring a 1939 Emerson for my sister and I'm so unfamiliar with the tech I'm hesitant.

If you touched that, would you actually get electrocuted?

50/50 chance if you touch the metal chassis and controls.. Use an isolation transformer. Plug radio into it first.
