In this video we'll look at four vintage radios in my collection, a Westinghouse and some General Electric, which need repair and restoration. One of them - a 1954 GE C407 - seems like it has a promising chance of survival, so we'll service it with all new caps and tubes and give it a tune.

Repairing table top radios in 1966, My father and I went out the night before garbage pickup and find jewels. We checked the tubes at the local grocery store, he taught me how to test the caps. We did it for fun then gave the raidos away. ❤Happy Memories, Thanks

Well done, its nice to see an old radio back from the dead. Those carbon resistors drift like hell, its amazing that tube radios last at all.

make a nice shop radio, they always did, I can still remember walking into part houses, mechanic shops, TV repairman shops, wrecking yards and they all had the old tube AM radio going that they just never shut off, even at night..

Don't forget to change the grid caps especially on the 50c5, don't want to toast that :)

First one is a Canadian Westinghouse model 507. Second is a Candian General Electric model C407. Lastly the big Candian General Electric model C100. They are all actually nice restore possibilites. Great job on the C407 Brad.

I wouldn't have bothered with the slugs out of fear of breaking them and just played with the trimmers on the tuning cap.

Dude, I have been restoring old '30s and '40s AM radios (wooden cabinet style) for a client over the last couple of months. I have done 4 so far. He is trying to come up with 9 of them to give to each of his grandkids. He does all of the wood cabinet restoration and gets me to do all of the electrical restoration. I was going to post videos of them eventually, but it looks like you've cornered the market now. LOL

the Westinghouse has Octals if it's 50's it is early 50's. They started using miniatures in the early 50's in Radios.

It's good that these radios are still available from estate sales, basements and sheds. And that people are restoring them for novel Bluetooth speakers!

Yeah it's too bad that it's all ads now. I've thought about sending a couple radios in for repair but then I realized the only thing I'd be able to listen to.

That 2W resistor should only be 68 ohms according to the schematic. If I saw the band correctly it looked like Blue, Green , Black, which would have been 68 ohms at one point. It is the dropping resistor in the series filament line. It being as high as it was, means that too much voltage is being dropped across it. Also, does that line cord you that you used have a polarity plug? I didn't see you check the polarity so I was just wondering. Definitely want the hot wire going straight to the switch and not the other way around.

Hey Brad I got a 4x12 cabinet given to me and all I have at the moment to run it is an old 1959 PA amp head, I was just wondering if possibly changing out the tubes with different specification tubes would give me a less tinny 50's sounding tone from the power amp head? Just thought you might know if that would change the sound. I haven't a clue. Thanks
