Big corporations always trying to poach off of the ones actually putting in the work. Glad you guys spoke on that, because it’s relatable to anyone who owns a small business as well. Stick it to the man!
funny---ya do realise that those big mean corp poachers ( RED BULL ) PAY THE $$ of FLIGHTS AROUND THE WORLD ON A MOMEMENTS NOTICE?!? do u really believe Koa pays for any flights? lol i bet he dont know how dude!haha i bet their bro Billy Kemper has a slightly different perspective......WSL and Surfline And RedBull all paid $$$$$$$$$$ and organised private jets- got him out of Africa during a PANDEMIC that litterally saved his life. i never took Ntew ( i did Koa ) as Generation ME dude. sad
Hi Nate, Koa, and Eli! Great to hear your opinions, and unique perspective about Surflines coverage... You guys have every right to feel frustrated. Ive posted a few times here and there about how tragic it is that big wave surfers, and you guys who follow the big swells, risk everything, only to have a big brand step in and steal your experience and expertise, and essentially take credit for it. If surfline isnt working hard to ensure sponsors are giving back to you, the surfer, then they need to fix it.
The first big car or watch brand to step in and sponsor you guys is going to reap the rewards. Thanks for continuing to include us on the real experience.
I think you guys are underestimating that most of your subscribers I think watch you guys for your personality and the background that goes into surfing big wave. That is why I love your guys channels. Keep it ripping !
Koa’s facial expressions with the flute commercial are priceless. Only you Nate dog could pull that off and expect nothing less from you. Good stuff boyz n glad to see Eli and hearing his thoughts n views
Love the content! As a 63 yr old who's surfed my whole life and worked independently outside of the surf industry my suggestion is build your investment portfolio and don't worry about the ups and downs. And try to get property paid off because 20-30 yrs will fly by fast. It has allowed for me to retire relatively young. Also there's no guarantee that you'll be able to physically handle stand up surfing later in life. Which for me is why your podcasts are gold.
Sick podcast. Eli is a good dude. Couple of things though boys..dont be tripping to hard about other big media outlets posting your waves before you do. This is just my personal opinion but the main reason i tune in and like watching your youtube videos is to see what goes on behind the scenes on a surf trip and what you guys get up to day to day. Honesty to much surf content can get a bit repitive depending on the wave. Good chats though guys i like hearing you talk honestly about issues in your sport 🤙
FYI I'm subscribed to all the major surf outlets and while I might see a clip from them first, I still watch your content with way more appreciation.. You guys keep doing what you're doing. It will outlive the mindless crap they post. When you are authentic and real and just you, it will always speak to a wider audience. It may not seem like it now but just keep doing it and wait. Look at Joe Rogen. You got this. 😰
Great Vlog fellas. BTW you guys were spot on about the whole content. I never watch the “kooks” videos only what you put out. It’s to bad you can’t copyright yourself somehow, so anytime someone else shows footage of you they either have to have your permission or PAY you. Keep up the good fight
Your guys content is so much more then just you on a wave. While someone else might have a clip of you on a wave that you are going to post is not going to stop people from watching the same wave.
I was wondering how you guys were gonna feel about surfline leaching off of you guys at teahupoo. Surfline shadow banned a ton of people in chat for that stream.
I can't help thinking about the video of all you boys (john, Ivan, Koa, Kiron, Eli and Nathan) sitting on the porch at 17 or 18 giving each other shit... and now you're all grown men with careers.... And you're still giving each other shit!! Life is good
I don't care if anyone post your content before you I'm invested in what you have to say along with the content no one else can provide that you guys are experts and when you collaborate.... Can it get much better? Keep up the great work!
You guys are soooo right about having poachers rob your content. I have heard that if you copyright and trademark your name, image and likeness this can curtail those who profit off your hard work. Just a thought and you all rock and are awesome. I have bought your blenders versions, got some swag from the sunrise shack,, and This is Livin and drive around with a "This is Livin" sticker on my car.
I think they can only do that with their own footage. If someone else takes the footage while they are in a public place then they own it ..that’s the bummer part.
@@TruthIsNot4Sale I wonder if it is consistently the same people pushing content on a regular basis. Then they could ask politely to not use footage of those who don't want it online. I do understand what you are saying. Has to be mutual way without having someone just stand in front of where they filming to interrupt the session. Or just have a grom dive in front of the camera every time Koa & Nate takeoff. #GromBadgeofhonor LOL
I am actually interested if with a good enough lawyer you could get your surfing copyrighted or something. It’s basically art they are creating on the wave and others are just stealing it. Ever tried filming a movie shoot of some Hollywood production? They really don’t like it 😂
@@nottherealChickenJoe and maybe Nate and Khoa could approach them with a legal contract of some kind saying they want to have control over their actions somehow but I don’t see that happening because it’s not illegal to film someone in public, and use it as your own content they can’t claim a closed set in the ocean 😉 but they could strike up a deal. They could also get sponsored by them and still have a good deal for their own content. They just have to see how they’re willing to work if they’re willing to work together turn a negative into a positive for everyone involved
I can see the frustration of having other people post your clips and waves first. But as someone who likes to watch surf clips, I think people will still watch your channels because they watch it for the personality and the relatability and the sense of connection they have with you guys as people. So, I still think you have the hand up over those other channels.
First off love your podcast. Secondly I never comment but after watching the first twenty minutes I felt I had to. It was cool watching the live stream, I loved seeing everyone charging those waves. But I have to agree with you that it could take away from your content. No matter what I watch both your channels and most importantly I watch beginning to end without skipping a second. We as a community, no matter what, have to make sure we support Koa and Nate in the manner no matter what. Let the hacks film their shit and even if we see clips of them bombing pipe or wherever, we still must watching all their content. ✌🏻
I ONLY watch your channels and not the others so that I support your work. I wait for your content, here and on your individual channels. I love that Jack labels each surfer. It gives them credit and is fun to watch. Nate also gives credit to people he surfs with. I was upset by the crowds and towing on small waves. I worry that the locals with be over run by crowds. You all give the locals great respect and I love that. Nice to see Eli!!
Aloha Eli, How awesome to work so long in New Zealand. That's something that will always be a highlight of your 20's. 🌊 Glad you healed up your body after all your injuries. Good vid interview!!
I have never commented before but love the podcast and all the content you guys put out. I don’t see how any other person or cooperation could put the quality, insight or humor on the surf days you share on your own channels. It’s worth the wait to see how you guys put it out. Really, even if I was to catch it somewhere else I want to see it from your perspective. It’s just completely different and way better. The time and energy you put into it shows and it’s awesome so thank you!
I stopped watching Surfline livestreams of wave moments. They don't cover well, and it is totally different that what you all do on your vlogs. And the cameras thieves stink. Different animals for sure. I wonder if you can charge for NIL?
Couldn't agree more on the paddle vs tow thing. I'm not a big wave guy, but I was paddling into outer reef Nicaragua with a couple friends and Garrett McNamara showed up with a ski and started whipping his crew into waves. It just completely killed the attitude in the water. We were pushing our limits and pushing each other and these guys were being loud and obnoxious and taking their pick of waves in each set.
I didn't think about the content stealing that way... sad and frustrating that's happening. Would totally support a trip to somewhere obscure where the cameras won't follow. I understand that nothing can replace Pipe and some of the other waves you mentioned... but I think a few videos at a great wave in the UK or Alaska etc could do just as well.
BTW, I found out about both of you through Surfline, as well as some other guys I now follow. Maybe I am out of touch? I am old! lol! For what it's worth, my opinion is the more eyes on you the better if becoming social media moguls is what you are trying to achieve. 🤙
dude the whining about the grind of surfing perfect tropical waves that may be live streamed was kinda L A M E lads....... kinda sounded like 2 Cali chicks being all annoying. Dude you guys surf for a living- WE WATCH IT. pls dont get all whiney about the drags of your RAD life. Eli was quiet during ur winge...... i kinda get wat u r trying to say, but as a solo Dad raising 2 teens, and if i get to have a moment to live stream a possible epic tow session then, im DEFINATLEY gonna watch u dudes clips too!... so kinda just be a bit more HUMBLE dude. IF I SAVE UP HALF A YEARS PAY TO POST A COUPLE CLIPS SHOT FROM A BOAT AT cHOPES, SORRY BUT I AM. eli is on the right trip.....youtube will die soon man
I get it! You are making content! A lot of work... But, when you go POV, fir a minute... And,, I mean 4 or 5 vlogs with only POV I'll watch other videos from shore! Look at your brother Jj.... He could teach you a thing.....What would you watch? Andy dropping in, or a view of water???
F*ck Surfline ! I'll always support you guys' (including Eli) content both individually and collectively and including Hawai'i over supporting a huge corporate platform, PERIOD !!! 😛🤙
Guys: The misappropriation of your likeness by Surfline et al is not lawful. You have rights. Consult a well known attorney within your entertainment industry for legal advice. You will need seed money to finance the litigation, but set up a legal fund and ppl will help. Also, some of the established firms will probably do it partially pro bono
Surfers need NIL protection, when it comes to other platforms such as Surfline using their clips & stepping on their views. The industry has been built off of the individuals in the water, w/ little to no balance & check process to protect the livelihood of the surfer. It’s time they either compensate or go back to their lane(sun par forecasting).
I dont think you can complain about the filmers on the beach. You are surfers. You surf the waves. The guy on the beach is a fan and or wants to film. You cant control the how the whole ecosystem works. People film all kinds of things and put it on youtube. If no one surfed and he wanted to just film the waves would you care? But because you go out and surf the wave now its a problem? Thats extremely arrogant to think that because you are playing with nature, no one else has the right to. Go to bed grom.
In a just world Stab and Surfline wouldn’t exist, but it’s cat nip for kooks. The only way to fix it is to keep putting them on blast. There should also be a Rob & Big situation whenever you got peep in’ Toms trying to cop clips.
First of all, I ONLY watch surf content from the surfer's channels. You guys, John, Jamie, Eli, Koa Smith, etc. It's the best content, the best commentary, and I know how it works, I'm not supporting the scavengers! Secondly, I'll watch Eli whenever possible because he probably has the shortest shelf life! 😮Keep up the good work guys, love the content!
+1 respect for repping the natural disaster and massive need for support on the island. It’s really devastating and everyone is already stressing and working hard enough locally to prepare for the Olympics
there’s a bigger picture regarding competition for your content, and it’s effect on the impact for your channel... as a consumer of content since social media was introduced, and a surfer for almost 40 years, i am effected just the opposite of your concerns...i am much MORE inclined to skip the guy who films your sessions from the beach for two obvious reasons...1. his footage is normally inferior to yours, unedited, and NOT focused on the surfer i want to see...and 2. even if i see his clickbait about ‘nate and koa score early pipe’...i’m going to look forward to seeing YOUR content even more. he’s little more than an advertiser for your content!!
Wish I could tag all those accounts that pop up every winter… channels named like”surfers of Hawaii” n stuff. Always felt it was kinda messed up just profiting off of over peoples skills
I am curious about the filming waves of others. Do you guys ask for other surfers' permission to post their waves? in your last edit there were Eimeo, Gilbert, Matahi.'s waves. Thank you and love the insights you always bring to surfing
For the record never bummed out on both of you guys recording the same swell because you both have different rides from different angles which I think makes it better and I love when you add some of your other some of your other favorite surfers.
Just so you guys know I saw the Surfline live thing pop up and thought nah I’ll just wait till Nate and koa post their videos to see the footage. You guys are the real deal!
I fought on a cage once, i trained MMA for a long time. I felt the same way Eli was feeling when i was about to fight and in all the process before. Thoughts and everything. Now, i started surfing 2 years ago and surfing is WAY more scarier. And i'm talking about small to medium sized waves. 6 foot max. And still even though i try to gradually overcome fear, it gets me way more than fighting ever got me. I find funny that surfers always say fighters are crazy (heard this already on a max holloway podcast with JR), but surfers are nuts About the content, your personality adds a lot of value to the videos so seeing another channel just posting your clips doesn't really make your content "old content" Greetings from Peru
Could you guys talk about the fins you use? In small waves, testing fins is so easy( less risk) but on days that are 6-8+ I can’t seem to find the go-to fins. When riding your step up do you size down or up ? I normally ride large in small to medium surf but hopping on a 6’2 and up for bigger surf, they feel too stiff. Or maybe I just suck😂 what are your guys thoughts?
8:52 Maybe you can turn around The Surfline issue to somehow benefit your self from it, Or to annoy then until the offer some kind of a deal Example: As soon they publish or showcase images with you guys in it, you can make a funny/stupid, trailer/preview using their own footage and logo of what’s to come in your channel. “As seen in Surfline bla, bla, bla…”. Just an idea. If you can’t because of “rights” just change their logo. I’m sure you could come up with a better idea Keep it up Don’t let that flute down 💪
Surfline's coverage was so full of advertorial dross and the commentary was so profoundly irritating, that it was intolerable for human consumption after about 15 minutes anyway. I acknowledge that it might entertain a bunch of people...I'm just not one of them. So - just waited for you blokes to put up your stuff, which killed it as usual and is the best. Welcome back Eli!!! Have missed your content mate.
I never thought about you guys having your content jacked. That’s not cool. If they are making a profit off of it aren’t you guys entitled to royalties? Koa I’ve surfed with your brother a few times at Rincon with Allen Boy in California. Keep up your hustle!!!!
Great content as usual, but please do a mic check beforehand & be mindful of your mic technique during recording. Wearing headphones helps to monitor audio levels.
no man tow is un paddlable what i saw that was KOOKING i sorry to say I would have kicked those jet skis put And I am NOT kidding andf I from Pump House Fl where we would fight those ass holes on my peak bro when it is time I tow in but not on 2 foot
Eli Olsen you fucking hellman keep charging!! Question for Nate, after getting ‘that’ wave at Chopes in 2016 did you call it a day or did it amp you for more??
This made me change my mind about Eli, seems like a nice humble dude. Respect. Also, don't worry Nate, Surfline can't compete with exclusive Mister Cool content.
Love the podcast content and your individual channels as well. My view on other filters using your waves for content is that they just enhance your profile and don't detract from it. They will help keep your sponsors happy and us fans will watch your stuff anyway. Because context + action is what makes it great
Nice! been wanting to learn more about this Eli guy lol no disrespect hommie, I can see you own it. . Charging and crew/pro?semi pro? local hawaii ripper? .... i've no idea. Shredding that is FO sure
Maybe pro surfers should unionize to control their content. This way, they could go to media companies and collectively bargain for the right to use their image. When it comes to the production and selling of images, surfers are essentially akin to performers. If actors [ who are unionized btw ] get paid for their performances, why shouldn't surfers?
Your guys surfing content is way better than others on RU-vid. And it's because it's raw footage that you guys capture and make your own. It has a genuine feel to it and you guys are fun to watch! It's awesome to see a good bunch of friends doing what they love together and killing it 🤙this podcast is fire too 🔥
Guys y’all aren’t competing against Surfline. Only a sliver of people watched the whole Surfline stream. Most people that watch you do it cuz y’all are hella entertaining. If anything, seeing surfers on the Surfline in a mission only hypes up your and everyone’s content.
Welcome to my world. I grow unique plants. I have an amazing farm. They come in, they snap their photo, and they claim they own all the rights to what they captured. I do all of the work, and they claim to own it. I'm like FTS. It only happened once. We wrote our contract saying we have equal rights to every photograph they take. Either take it or leave it. They all took it.
Great video again and I agree with what you say about footage and not waiting for you to put it out first etc. I am glad Eli enjoyed New Zealand, where I live. Hopefully you guys can visit again sometime. Thanks again for another great podcast
Not just for surfing, we need to stear away from profiteering as a society Especially with AI coming in fast, we need serious ethics so it doesn't get real bad.
In the tournaments in Shoto Kan, the more rela Ed I was , the openings were evident. .y contact was there before my brain. Whistle blew. Win. When I think too Much I would loose. Don't think
