Love they’re having the conversation about regulating line ups. This is such a important part of surfing. Too many people just coming out of nowhere with no order creates chaos. Great episode fellas! Keep it up
Locals also need to understand the balance. You can’t just expect every set wave because you live near the wave. People can only be cut in front of in the line before they snap. Hawaiian locals get away with it because they have a gang on the beach to back them up at all times. Anyone else tries this nonsense too many times and they’ll either be met in the car park or come back to slashed tires.
The best part of the interview with John was when he absolutely just zoned out, it was like he left the room and went into another dimension for a little while. 😂
Much gratitude to you guys for your insightful thoughts, wisdom/knowledge and funny stories! Can't get on the podcast apps because of my Deafness, so I am grateful to you guys for enabling the closed caption option on this YT channel!
Love the podcast. New mics are sick!! One other thing you might consider. Matching the white balance on the two cameras. This will help them have the same color temperature so its less jarring when you cut between the two cams. Its super easy to do, I recommend setting them both to 5600 but see what looks best and set them the same. Cheers.
I’m currently in a pretty low point in my life, but this podcast and the way you two interact with each other never fails to bring a smile to my face. Keep up the good work!
You guys remind me why I chose to surf Gas Chambers and Eukai most of the time so I didn't have to deal with the crowds and the hierarchy. Pipe is incredible, but not dealing with the crowd is even better for me at least.
Fuck man I love this podcast. Just got through my workout listening in. I'm older than you guys, but your channels keep the stoke alive and now when I paddle out I say to myself "fuck man Nate and Koa would go!" Keep up the stoke!
It would be cool to rename the FILMERS CUP, the Larry Haynes Filmer Cup. Its neat that his last instagram post was shooting you Koa. Thanks so much to you both!
Not much downside with a Gath helmet for me. Hearing: fine, Balance/ inner ear: fine, Face slam parachute: super rare. The downside is really just social - being judged as a kook. Ski helmet, bike helmet, surf helmet have similar value. While it is true that wiping out safely is a very real skill that must be developed and is the primary means of protection, how much control of your board do you really have when you wipe out? As one surf pundit put it, to not wear a helmet in surf in which one is wiping out quite a bit is "fashion over function". I suppose surfing was a non-conformist pusuit at one time but those values are diminshed in the current surf tribe culture.
I don't surf with a helmet, but I'm not surfing pipe either. I would say that skiing, biking, and skateboarding, I definitely notice it, and it somewhat affects balance, but one gets used to it. What I would say, is that helmets are not a panacea, and are mainly good for reducing acute trauma like skull fractures. Concussions, not so much... But not having a skull fracture is fantastic.
One question! can you guys talk about exiting out the back of a close out? I try to just smash through with my shoulder and push off my board but there must be more technique for bigger waves? Muchas gracias, love the pod 🙌
Thank you guys 😃🤙 33:11 it’s a tuff conversation but agree it shouldn’t be.. but because of technology and channel promotion, more people than ever are able to see places like the north shore in 4k looking as awesome as it is. Then through RU-vid and other streams you can make a lot of money through every aspect of surfing, filming etc Which in-turn attracts a lot of inexperienced people into very dangerous situations because they don’t realise the reason you guys make it look so easy on camera is your professional surfers and good editing, unfortunately a lot of the youth are buying into the dream but don’t want to put in the work and with the green as an insensitive who’s going to stop them.🤷♂️
Would be interested to hear how CT surfers are in the lineup at Pipe. And do they get some waves before the contest. And how does it work for CT surfers at other waves. I'm sure they're not just showing up and sitting in the inside. Especially when there is an event upcoming.
Since I started Mountain Biking I've gotten used to them. You have to so you just accept it. In the water I contemplate it still, kind of think I was an idiot skating and pulling into some shelfs not having one on now that I'm older and see what has happened to others. I guess it's ultimately up to you..
Dude the mics are just a great new addition, I have surfed England waves since (15 yr old, now 44) and I am a full time photographer ( unfortunately not in the surf industry ) I loved this episode, and such good subjects, especial the water 'picking order' I remember hearing stories about pipe being narly with drop in's, but yeah I total get it!.. but anyway keep this up
Great podcast guys. I’m an old ski bum that wants to be a pro surfer but since that won’t happen I live vicariously through your crew on the N Shore. The kook syndrome happens in the big mountains too. I hate to say it but it’s usually snowboarders that get in way over their heads On a board you can slide heel side down damn near anything but it scrapes all the snow off and ruins the steeper lines. If you guys are ever in Utah hit me up and I’ll show you around!! Keep the content coming. You guys are awesome
Thanks for another episode that felt like hanging out with you. New microphones! The same gradual steps with your tech, like your gradual steps to surfing Pipe. Really relevant chat about the lineup and realising that the task of regulating now falls to you, but with cameras everywhere I totally understand your reticence to you 🙈 Great chat about helmets, I used to wear a hard hat on the reefs in the Canary Islands and subsequently agree with your conclusion. The helmet inhibits too many of our senses. Lots of natural chat, Koa gently charing the discussion, Nate's giggles and the Filmers Cup stories 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for my weekly fix you two ✨️🤙🙌👊🏼
Sound is great. Viewer question segment might be good. Always wondered if there were rules about filming and posting surfers, like do certain pros not like to be filmed by randoms? Sounds like it is a free for all these days.
I just left a comment but this is probably my new fav pod. Even if it should be brought to you by 2 bears sports management....smh bert is reapky screwing the poodle imho 😂
You guys make an amazing team. Would love to see the great Eddie Rothman interview . Your mom’s would be fun. Would love to see Makana Pang ,Coco, Makua,Kai Lenny,Eli,Kimi Werner,Mason and Michael,Ivan, Jamie, Mahina… endless fun !!
OK, you asked for opinions on helmets...I wear them and have worn them in all the sports that I have played and participated...there were two times when I didn't wear one, a huge Cocoa Beach hurricane swell in 1999 and while JUST RIDING my bike to the bike shop to replace the pads in my bike racing/speed skating helmet because it didn't fit right due to worn out pads (a loose helmet can be just as dangerous as not wearing one) and of course, I stupidly took a high-speed fall, bouncing my head off the asphalt like a basketball...in addition to the road rash of my face, I lost part of my left ear, broke T1 and two ribs, and had a major concussion...the other time, after a close out barrel, while my board and I tumbled thru the beatdown, my board was left with a perfect impression of the back of my head and I had, of course, another concussion...all the other times of many years when I have fallen in so-called adventure sports (surfing, bike racing, snowboarding, speed skating, climbing) I have never had another concussion nor suffered head injuries of any type...many other broken bones yes, and broken and scraped up helmets, but no head injuries...so imho, wear one...that's just my opinion...dj
Another question about protection gear - Whatever happened to fins with rubber edges and stick-on nose guards? I sold more boards than I've ever ridden back in the late 90's and I remember they were really popular then. The nose guards seemed like a really easy way to keep the tip of the nose from impaling you or someone else without interfering with anything but I never got enough experience to see if there was some drawback once you got past beginner-level.
Curious how much you have to pay those filmers for a clip? How much do they get paid to do that job??? I hate to say it but all the great videos of surfing are likely inspiring weekend warriors or people who simply are not ready for the big waves, to try anyway. Sadly, it will likely take someone getting very hurt and making it public, to back people off from doing that. I kind of wish that the lifeguards would take a bit stronger stance as enforcers when they see people who are over their heads. That whole Woke culture that is trying to destroy peoples lives is ruining everything for everyone.
My idea, since you brought up the part of pipeline and regulating, etc ... Koa, bring your Dad on if he will do it. Would love to see him talk about, stories, etc
Guys, it's a cool podcast and super fun to get to know more casual and personal things that go on in pro surfers life. I would like to see some interviews of people who do other water sports in hawai, like bodyboarding, bodysurfing, photographers, etc. I also think it would be cool to include your filmers so they can tell us about what its like filming for you guys, especially when they have to film a solid wipeout.
It's cool to see you guys starting up and learning as u go along. Enjoy the real talk. Liked the pipeline info for the beginners who don't know they have to put in their time before paddling out next to u guys. You absolutely have to be the ones to say it now. The 1st podcast was cool bc u explain a lot as well without even realizing it. May bring in more rookies out to the water but...they'll realize lol
Great work fellas. Something I've been wondering about lately is how many of the 300 or so people out at the Pipeline actually ride waves? That is to say surely many just paddle out, get in the way and go in without catching a wave?
You guys have been friends all your life, spent more time with each other than most people do with their families, awesome experiences. What makes your friendship click, like twins sort of . Tell some experiences of your childhood, and have you ever had a big falling out? Always a pleasure to see how well you interact
With that many people out at pipe there are surely more than a handful of locals that are just free surfers. The big names shouldn't be responsible for regulating the line up. There are enough old school locals that might not have much to lose by "thinning the herd' in the line up. I bet it would take just one month for word to get out and the normies/kooks to adjust to their place in the order of things. That being said, love you guys are doing! Keep it up.
Koa and Nathan are masters at their art - big wave surfers. One thing I can kind of relate to is growing up on the South Shore of Oahu in the early-mid 70's. My dad and brothers started with tankers (longboards), and my first time surfing was at Baby Queens with my dad pushing me onto a small wave (ripple?) on a tanker when I was about 9 years old. I was lucky enough to start surfing with short boards - with one fin - in fact we called it a skeg - only kooks would refer to it as a fin. Also, I started before cords - when they first came out we called it a kook cord and most refrained from using it for different reason (one believing the board would spring back and crack your head). The first ones were actually bungee cords and you'd have to drill a hole in your skeg to attach it - with a knot. Talk about drag. Anyway - Koa and Nathan talking about the inexperienced surfing Pipe because of helmets, makes me relate how so many started surfing (overpopulating spots) because of the cord. We used to have swim (or bodysurf in) to get our boards. Heck we used to bring out our friend's boards by holding onto it with our foot while paddling our own out. We used to judge waves and take off on waves way more thoughtfully. Now any kook will take off and lose control the second they try to stand up. Guys like Koa and Nathan pull of stuff now that we could only dream of back then - yeah improved board designs, but they are just amazing surfers. However, that all said I wouldn't change it - back in the 70's we would go out on really good days with absolutely no one else out. I'm sure my older brothers surfing in the 60's was even so. Not just South Shore, but West Side and the North Shore. There's an old saying about the crowds - "More today than yesterday, but less than tomorrow." Anyway that was a long time ago and I'm now far from home.
Definitely worth the upgrade getting the new set up. Always enjoyed watching your channels and this just adds a whole new dimension. I think the problem with enforcing on the youth was it was labelled bullying and you'd end up getting in more trouble yourself than the person that's outside of their zone. The parents of these kids are also to blame as they were bullied when they were young and advocated against it so their kids wouldn't be. Peace & Love from Australia 🇦🇺 🤙
Audio is WAY better. Would love to hear you guys do an episode where you discuss how you progressed from beginner surfing to eventually surfing pipe. What were the steps that it took to get good enough to surf a place like pipe.
Nice mics! Already a good start using them. You haven't positioned them in front of your faces, which I often see on video'd pods. Very interesting thoughts about helmets especially Koa's experience. As for guest I'd like to hear from your parents and what it's like when your kid wants to do something as dangerous as you guys do. Also, perhaps someone who was around at the time of the 'old days', how did it get started, what were the rules, how they enforced the rules, and what they think can be done in these 'new days'.
I would love to see you guys bring da Hui OGs on the show and talk about what it was like back in the days with hierarchy. I heard some crazy stories. Surfers gettin there ass kicked in the water for dropping in on da HUi .
Oh! Aside from the helmet thing. This podcast is one of the best surfing insight media products I’ve ever seen. FYI…my surfing days are over but am so glad to see such knowledge passed on for those to come!!!
Great podcast. Always interesting topics. Funny though, back in the day, there was lot more respect in the line up. Everyone knew where they were on the pecking order, and out of respect you surfed the scraps in the inside. Even surfers that were not as good as you, if they were the older local dudes, you knew to stay away.
Thanks for the upgrade on the audio, way better now. Still, it was understandable most of the times before! Keep up with the content, I really like to hear your insights as a kook who started way too late in life
I think it would be interesting for you guys to go into detail about all the different “parts” of Pipe… as you named a few “second reef”…”inside bar””wide set” etc. and all the “steps” you took in those 15 years to get to the top of the hierarchy. The bathymetry of pipeline is so interesting too….this would be a good topic for discussion!
31:09 Aloha from Norwaii! Congrats on the set up. Just wanted to give my 2 cents on the regulating topic. I think you guys telling novice pipe surfers to beat it is a good thing. The lifeguards do it. It’s about safety and it’s a matter of being pro active in safety. You should not feel bad about it. Love the pod. Best. Nicholas
remember a couple years ago seeing two guys show up at pipe with new wavestorms and a pipe lifeguard stopping them from going out, it was small pipe but still big enough for me to stay on the beach, i have surfed for thrity years and know enough to know pipe is not for me. plain old common sense
Yea, you are probably doing some of those guys a favor if you tell them they need to go back in. If 20 guys are telling them to go in, they probably will. With cell phone cameras and lawyers, the days of slapping a guy in the lineup, or punching him on the beach are over.
Thanks for getting the mics - much better sound. You could buy a couple of small coffee tables that you put behind you (one on each side) and clamp the mic's to them, so they reach out low over the table and don't distract the visuals. Plus then you can have the guest sit in the middle and mics won't be in the way. You can also sit back more naturally and pull the mic up to you instead of hunching over the table.
There was nothing wrong with the old audio. The new mics are an upgrade... im gonna check them out for my own podcast.. old scool fly fishing.. soft hackles... im taking notes. So keep up the good work. Your inspiring... RIP Larry....
So friken epic you guys are actually following though with a legit podcast. Not sure if it’s too late for wave of the winter but you’ll be ready to act on all your ideas for 2024
Mics sound awesome boyzzz and an old Hawaiian surfboard as a table and all guests must sign it. Also maybe raffle it off one-day and put the money to a mad foundation. Guests...sir Eddie himself and Mrs Florence both parents at some stage would be insane to hear their point of views on you two and your gen of surfing. Also Uncle Clyde and definitely Uncle Mike and the Ho family would be crazy as Mason is hilarious 🤙🤙🤙 Keep on keeping on👊👏 Yeeeewwww!!!🤙 Much luv from downunder 🦘🏄
Helmets might have place if one surfs heavy water solo lots. I know of two surf aquatances who were knocked unconscious by their boards. Nobody saw them and they drowned. I feel like hoods offer bit protection. Invite Burt Kreisher on next time he is in town, You guys are epic . Reminds me to try and catch you guys vlogs too.Shaka
I would love to surf hawaii someday. I have lot of experience elsewhere but just never been. But man that first time I go out on north shore im not gonna be near a soul lol. I have way to much respect for the sport and those waves to be near anyone. I had the same sense when I moved to florida but now I’m comfortable being in the crowds there because like they said I took the time to learn away from people
So boys I see Jamie has joined the podcast gig! As to controlling the pipe line up it needs to be done to keep everyone safe, without looking to wolfpackish. As you know back in the day Pops and the black short boys ruled the place, not that you wanna go back to that! Helmets are a good idea for those that are qualified to surf Pipe, but should not be used to make you feel safe if you haven’t paid your dues 😮
Would be cool to have a TBI expert chime in about helmets. But I get the idea that they throw your balance off some… I think you get used to it though.
Way better!! Now move the mixing board out of the frame, so u will have room for sponsor placement product. Put them in the frig wo the box put box wer mixing board is =get more sponsor
mics so much better! - compare this to episode 3 which was more like 'traffic sounds of Oahu' :-) talking of filmers - would love to see Zord and Jack on - what gear they use? do all those drones at pipe ever crash into each other? ever been capturing wave of the day and some tourist has walked right in front of the lens? ;-)
Good move on upgrading your audio. There's nothing more frustrating that trying to listen to interesting people talk while using crappy microphones ... with tons of background noise coming from an open window. Now I can listen to a full episode!
You guys telling your story of growing up on the north shore is price less , I came from the surfer magazine generation , this is just amazing . Thank you guys
Lovin the content Brothers much respect from Margaret River 🤙i dont want to promote alcohol and drinking but id love to see you two have a couple beers and see where the convos go , nothing like a good laugh 💚🤙 and Owen the Aussie was great haha we like to drink down under 🍻
MICS! Yes! Sounds really good fellas. Your podcast content is excellent, you're both very likable, and these episodes have been a great listen so far. Looking forward to what's in store...🤙
Great job. Loving all episodes. Koa loving the energy boost, but hows the liver king supplement experiment going ? Maximum gains. 37:34 you looking like his twin !!! Hahah. Keep them coming guys.
I'm thinking surf helmets need to evolve....just like bicycle helmets have...if they are collecting water.....maybe they need some pukas (waterflow....on land it's for airflow)...hmm....need to rethink the helmet designs
