13 Low-Light Houseplants! | Plants That Love Low-Light

Today I will be sharing 13 houseplants that do not mind low-light situations. I am by no means saying that low-light settings are IDEAL for each of these plants, because that is just not true. I am saying, however, that when I have placed these plants in low-light parts of my home, the light situation did not have too much a negative impact on them.
I will say, though, that less light does create some changes in several of these plants... such as slow growth & less blooms.
Thanks for watching!

I find a lot of the plants mentioned do not do so well for a very low-light. My peace lily, spider plants, and chinese evergreen suffered in a very low-lit area, and bounced back when I gave it medium light. The ZZ tolerates low light but does much better and grows faster in medium to bright.

At 1:30 you can see the white "flower" is beginning to turn green. Fyi this is an indicator that the peace lily is getting a little too much light. The specifics of why and how are: the white spathe, sometimes called a "flower", is actually a specialized leaf. So, when it gets a little too much light the chloroplasts are activated more and show more which is what causes the green color in the spathe. Tip for peace lily lighting: watch for the "flowers". If you're not seeing flowers, it could use a little more light in order to produce them. If they are turning green, then it has a little too much light. Hope this helps!

You should show people the actual placement in your home for each plant so people can see the amount of light you mean, because half of these plants I have in a south facing window because I'm in an apartment and the balcony above me blocks direct sunlight from hitting my plants so I have higher light plants up against the window and the lower light plants behind them. Everyone's amount of light is going to be different. P.S. you are naturally more beautiful than any super model!

i think you need to define low light. I work in a green house at a nursery and the customers i deal with often have very different understandings of what low light means. From the look of it your place has a ton of ambient light so you can grow pretty much anything there. There are a lot of plants which are usually considered houseplants that can actually acclimate to full sun, any type of ficus or croton for example. I've even seen spathiphylums and hydrangeas in full sun but they aren't super happy. I love your ZZ plant zamioculcas zamifolia, one of my favorites. would you believe i have acclimated them to live underwater in my fish tank twice? My colleagues are baffled lol but plants can adapt to a wide variety of conditions given enough transition time. i also love your calathea lancifolia and i want to tell you, that burn on the leaf was not from light They can take lots of light humidity and heat and almost full fun. that was a classic chemical burn from fertilizer or salt build up. Rinse the soil real good ay time you see that pattern, or even soak it for a while to leach out the chemical. you can recognize chemical burn by the way it tarts at the tip or edge and progresses inward, the plant is trying to push the chemical out and is willing to sacrifice some leaf to do it. btw calathea is one of the few plants i have seen go straight from air, knock off the soil, and then be submerged in water and be just fine. For really low light ZZ is a good one provided it gets nice and dry or has plenty or aggregate in the soil. It's the super rich peatey soil that rots out and the roots are next and then you gotta amputate if there's any hope. Pachira can also take pretty low light but again they need to dry out good for the same reason Dracena Craigii and all cultivars, dracena massangeana, craigii compacta And especially aspidistra, the cast iron plant, very hard to kill it with sun shade drought or flood, but some people told me they managed to do it. One last thing, about the bridal veil, i forget the species of that kind of tradescantia, but that is one of my favorite genuii or whatever is genus in plural form. They are bad ass, i have seen ome survive with not soil very littl light at the bottom of a pile of cuttings in a box for over a year and they are still alive. they looked terrible but the were alive. low light indeed but you gotta be careful on watering to much.

I wish I knew what else to do and how to work with the changing light in our home each day and each changing season. Good old Sansaverias. We travel fulltime in our RV. Most plants barely last a couple seasons because the environment I can give them changes so much. Plus, they mostly have to live outside. But I have had a couple Sansaverias for years, in full Florida sun and in deep shaded Wisconsin woods, in the Sonoran desert and in Washington's constant sunless damp. They just keep soldiering thru.

I live in England in a terraced house and I know about ‘low light’ my spider plants didn’t like it here and I had to take them back to work where I propagated them. The calathea has been doing really well in the upstairs room where there is diffused light. Any direct light and over watering seems to upset all of these plants. I have a Hoya which needs to be left alone, but hasn’t flowered yet! But my two peace lilys love the dark corners and diffused light as they consistently flower.

Most of the plants with patterns need bright light to maintain their colors, otherwise their leaves may need to synthesize more chlorophyll to survive the low light situation, and their leave may revert to solid green.
@racers115
@racers115 3 года назад
Just depends on plant. My polka dot plant looses its bright colors and reverts to green when l put it in bright light but when l move it back to lower light the new leaves come back with bright colors again.

Great video! I am looking for low light plants because my room gets almost no sunlight during the colder months. I also googled if they are toxic to animals because I have a cat so NON TOXIC plants for cats are: 1. zebra plant, 2. calathea plant, 3. african violet, 4. parlor palm, 5. spider plant, 6. fittonia / nerve plant. NOT TOXIC but could be not the best for sensitive pets: 1. polka dot plant.

If I had a house fire this plant makes the “grab on my way out items” I have had this Hoya plant for almost 40 years. That 40 is not a typo. I have dated photos where I can see it in the background. I have a plant that is special. It’s a very hardy plant and one that can be coaxed into growing around any shape ( like a cut coat-hanger arc or semicircle). Best of all it is very easy to maintain. However, you may want to include it in your will.

Your home looks very bright to me. I think what you are considering low light is more like bright, indirect light. My house is mostly north facing windows and for a number of reasons, I don't have an option to put the plants right up in the window. So I'm talking north facing windows and plants 6+ feet away from the window, or the closest would be in a corner near-ish to a window. I'm looking for plants that will not just barely tolerate that kind of light, but will be content (if not happy, at least content) in that type of location.

@racers115
@racers115 3 года назад
Those can be found (similar) at nearly any store that has an indoor garden section. They are usually pretty expensive if sold as a standalone item, expect around $30 price range. They also tend to be very seasonal rather than stocked year round. Usually the time to get them is when they are being sold with a plant already in them because the nursery that the plants came from were able to get a wholesale price on the tea cup planters and usually the nurseries that supply the retail stores don't charge a mark-up for the pot but just their standard price for the plant plus their own wholesale cost on the pot. Usually there will also be a few potted tea cup plants that don't do so well.... and the store will then mark down the item even more so that's an excellent time to buy it even if it's just for tea cup pot since the plant might not be saveable at that point. Another option to consider is to make your own by going to a thrift store and picking up large mugs or soup mugs which can be nearly the size of the one in the video. It won't have a drain hole in the bottom but if you have a power drill at home or know anyone that does have one you can just drill a whole in the bottom for drainage and then set it on whatever saucer you'd like. Lastly, you can also purchase tea cup pots on Amazon, just type in tea cup planter in the search field.

I can not believe what is happening . I meant what I said as a constructive criticism not to be malice or malicious in any way what so ever. I actually real like her video I think she does know her stuff .... but like all of us, every day is learning day. Again I apologize. I guess what I should have expressed that every ones idea of low light medium light seem to vary. So that being said, I think that it would make me and other understand more clearly if you were to take us on a house tour to show us each room and the light perspective in each one and where the plants stay. Because you seem to always be in a really bright room when you do your video. simply because I we could get a better understanding. The reason for this is because I had some of those low light plants and the die on me. For some reason they just would not thrive for me. And again I apologize for grief I may have cause you. Now I will leaf you alone.... get it, leaf you alone. LOL Yours Truley Dawn

Interesting about your african violets. Mine do much better in higher light and all the research ive done says they like more light. My prayer plant likes low light.

I’m obsessed with watching your videos! Seriously such a guilt pleasure for me. My boyfriend, by the way is the same way about my plants as your husband... tells me all the time I don’t need more.. and I’m pretty sure i have like 1/3 of what you do. He’s crazy!! Hahaha! But he does love how happy it makes me.

African Violets can grow in low light area but it will not look as beautiful. The leaves will strive up and spoil the symmetry of the plant.

I think the less you touch and mess with the plants the better they do.I have an obsession with plants in the past five years and the most important thing I know is not to water them with city water as the chlorine will hurt them so unfortunately I buy bottle water and give that to them.But compared to a twelve dollar drink at a restraunt or bar the bottle water gallons make the plants a cheap date. Thanks for a nice video.

Harli G my point exactly. A lot of the varieties of plants we've chosen to keep indoors are among the most resilient plants there are. Try killing a pothos and see how long it takes. It would take a lot longer than six months. My point is your video is structured as a "teaching with authority from experience" type video. Maybe you should do more of a "learn with me as I learn" type style until you have gained some solid knowledge.
